TV legend is says she's spilling the beans with tell-all memoir as she turns 90
Coronation Street legend Amanda Barrie is finally lifting the lid on her extraordinary life in a tell-all autobiography as she turns 90 – and she promises: "I will hold nothing back.'
The legendary actress – best known for playing Alma Baldwin in Coronation Street and Cleopatra in the Carry On films – says she's 'finally ready to tell everything' in I'm Still Here, which hits shelves this September, just days before she turns 90.
She teases that the bombshell memoir will be filled with secrets, scandal, and stories from her glittering seven-decade career on stage and screen.
Amanda laughs: 'If I manage not to fall off the twig before September I shall have been 'here' for 90 extraordinary years. More than anything this means I now say and do exactly what I like. When and where I like. And so, as I write my unexpurgated life story, I at last feel free to do so without fear or favour."
Born amid the chaos of World War II, Amanda ran away from home aged just 13 to become a Soho showgirl – the first daring step in a remarkable life that would eventually see her crowned a true national treasure.
Her memoir will chart her rise from those wild early days to becoming a household name, starring in everything from the cheeky Carry On films to Bad Girls, and even making a splash in the Celebrity Big Brother house.
But it's not just the glitz and glamour Amanda's ready to talk about. For the first time, the star will open up about her deeply personal journey – including falling in love with her now-wife, acclaimed novelist Hilary Bonner, who is also ghostwriting the book.
Amanda reveals the pain of growing up as a young gay woman in an era when homosexuality was still illegal for men, and the 'heart-wrenching' choice to keep her sexuality private for most of her life.
'I have 90 years to share: 90 years of joy and sorrow, triumph and disaster, love and loss, laughter and tears,' she says. 'Ninety years of watching the world change around me beyond my wildest imagination. And I will hold nothing back.'
Fergus McKenna, Managing Director of Mirror Books, said: 'It is an overused word but there's little doubt that Amanda Barrie is a legend in the world of show business. With more than 80 years of performing under her belt and a life lived under the glare of the spotlights, she has seen and done almost everything. And she's not afraid to share those stories in full for the first time.'
Amanda Barrie's autobiography I'm Still Here is out September 2025. Click here to preorder the book.

King Charles to mark 80th anniversary of VJ Day with address
King Charles will mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day on Friday with a message paying tribute to the service and sacrifice of military personnel in the second world war who fought and died in the Pacific and far east, saying they will never be forgotten. In an address, Charles will reflect on the horrors experienced by prisoners of war and civilians of occupied lands in the region 'whose suffering reminds us that war's true cost extends beyond battlefields, touching every aspect of life'. VJ Day on 15 August marks the anniversary of Japan's surrender to the allies after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, which in effect ended the second world war. The message will be released at 7.30am on Friday, before the king and queen attend a service of remembrance with veterans and the prime minister, Keir Starmer, at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. On Friday evening, hundreds of buildings across the country will be lit up to mark VJ 80 as part of commemoration events planned throughout the UK. In his six-minute speech, echoing the historic broadcast by his grandfather, George VI, Charles will describe how the heroes of VJ Day 'gave us more than freedom; they left us the example of how it can and must be protected', with victory made possible by close collaboration between nations 'across vast distances, faiths and cultural divides'. He will say this demonstrated how 'in times of war and in times of peace, the greatest weapons of all are not the arms you bear but the arms you link', and will add the service and sacrifice of veterans and those who lost their lives fighting in the conflict 'shall never be forgotten'. Friday's televised service, broadcast live by the BBC, will pay tribute to all those who served in the Asia-Pacific theatre, including Burma Star recipients, British Indian army veterans, former prisoners of war, and those who fought in pivotal battles including Kohima and Imphal in India. Charles, Queen Camilla and other senior figures will leave floral tributes during the service, which will be hosted by the Royal British Legion in partnership with the government. A national two-minute silence will conclude with an aerial display by the Red Arrows and the service will draw to a close with a flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, before the king and queen attend a reception with second world war veterans.

Coronation Street star REPLACED as ITV quietly recasts character from one of the soap's most famous families - and they've already started filming
A Coronation Street star has been replaced after ITV quietly recast a character from one of the soap's most famous families - and they've already started filming. Actor Carter-J Murphy, who plays Harry Platt in the ITV soap, has waved goodbye to the Cobbles after just one year on the show. The young star took on the role of Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) and Callum Logan's (Sean Ward) back in late 2024. Since then, he's only appeared on the soap a number of times, and now he's taken on another job which means he won't be able to play the young boy. Youngster Carter-J is now set to appear in Matilda The Musical. And according to The Sun, the actor has been replaced by an actor called Josh, who will appear on Corrie very soon. Carter-J's former alter-ego has been through a lot since he was welcomed into the world in 2016. Firstly, his parents, Sarah and drug dealer Callum had a very turbulent relationship which was very short-lived. Sarah's sister-in-law Kylie Platt (Paula Lane) ended up killing Callum after he attacked her and they decided to bury him in Sarah's mum Gail's garden. Kylie also shared her son Max with Callum. This is proved too much for Sarah and she ended up going to hospital after she gave birth to Harry, because it all proved too much for her. Fortunately for the Platts, nobody was convicted of drug dealer Callum's death. Harry has been played by a number of young stars over the years, however, his dead dad Tony Stewart (Terence Maynard) was more or less blamed for it all. Since Harry has been born Sarah has been in a number of different relationships. She was with Gary Windass (Mikey North) between 2016 and 2019. The Underworld manager later got with Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) and they tied the knot in 2020. However, back in 2023 she had an affair with Damon Hay (Ciaran Griffiths), meaning that they split. Woody Illsley took on the role in 2016, while Pixie and Presley Sellars played the boy until 2017. And just before Carter-J started to play Harry, Freddie and Isaac Rhodes starred in the ITV soap as Harry between 2017 and 2024. Carter-J isn't the only star leaving the show. Earlier this year month another beloved Coronation Street star has announced her departure from the ITV soap after a decade in Weatherfield, leaving heartbroken fans reeling. The actor confirmed the news on Instagram in a heartfelt post that sent shockwaves through the fanbase, with many branding the exit 'the worst news.' Sally Ann Matthews revealed she is saying goodbye to Jenny Connor, the fiery landlady of the Rovers Return.

Coronation Street's Beverley Callard, 68, showcases her huge leg tattoo in skimpy denim shorts after adding to the 'growing' inking
Coronation Street star Beverley Callard showcased her giant leg tattoo as she uploaded a clip to Instagram on Thursday. The soap actress, 68, who starred as Liz McDonald on the ITV soap, was seen standing in her kitchen wearing a pair of skimpy denim shorts. But as her husband, Jon McEwan - who she has been marry to since 2010- walked towards her, fans were able to catch a glimpse of her extended inking. She has added a sixth magnolia to the 'growing' bloom of flowers which creeps up her lower leg. The design features purple, blue and red flowers with pretty petals winding their way up her calf from her foot. It's not the first tattoo for the soap star, with Beverley previously revealing she got her first inking at 59. The actress had comedy and tragedy masks inked over a music score along with a red love heart in tribute to her husband Jon. The couple's names are written in the love heart along with 30-10-10, their wedding anniversary. Before tying the knot with Jon, Beverley was married to Steve Callard from 1989 until 2001, David Sowden from 1980 until 1988 and Paul Atkinson for three years from 1974 until 1977. Beverley has previously revealed that she's planning to go under the knife because she's 'scared of not getting any work'. Talking about her plans to have a facelift, Beverley told The Sun: 'I am going to do it, yes. It's difficult because our industry is so sexist and ageist, still.' She continued to reflect on how many films have husbands who are much older than their wives, saying the wives are usually 'stick insects… and their faces don't move'. 'I'm just going to join that because I'm scared of not getting work,' she added. The actress is thought to be intending to have the work done at London's Harley Street Skin Clinic. Despite being quite determined to have the surgery, her husband Jon and children Rebecca, 46, and Joshua, 32, are not said to be very keen. Beverley brushed off their concerns, saying she 'hates mirrors' and hasn't got much confidence about her appearance, preferring to play a role than appear as herself. She also detailed Jon's response to her facelift plans while on Melanie Blake's Girl Talk podcast in March, saying: 'Jon really doesn't want me to have it done. 'But I'm going to do it and I am doing it for me.'
