
Air India faces Rs 1,000 cr liability as legal claims mount after AI171 crash
Reuters Aircraft accidents, though rare, leave a devastating impact that extends far beyond the wreckage of lives. Compensation becomes not only a matter of monetary redress, but a crucial step toward accountability, closure and rebuilding lives.In the aftermath of last week's AI 171 tragedy, Air India offered ₹1 cr as compensation per deceased person to his or her next of kin. While this announcement was prompt and appears generous, the airline could be on the hook for a much higher amount. Families may have significant claims, depending on how the investigation unfolds.
India has ratified the 'Montreal Convention' - Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules for International Carriage by Air - by incorporating it into the Carriage by Air Act 1972. This provides for a 2-tier compensation system defined in terms of special drawing rights (SDR), an international reserve asset created by IMF to supplement official reserves of its member countries. Accordingly: The airline must compensate the kin of the deceased passengers up to SDR 128,821 (₹1.6 cr), regardless of any fault or wrongdoing by the airline. This compensation is the absolute minimum, without exception. Some media reports have indicated that the ₹1 cr offered by AI is separate, and in addition to the SDR amount required under the convention. Kin of the deceased may seek compensation over and above this SDR amount, based on actual loss. This would be calculated on lost income, and companionship of victims who sustained their families and dependents. AI could avoid higher compensation only if it proves there was no negligence, wrongful act or omission by the airline (including its servants or agents, which include various third parties engaged by the airline to service the aircraft or assist with the flight).Alternatively, the airline could defend itself if the accident occurred solely due to wrongful acts, or omissions of a third party, such as in the case of terrorism. The legal burden is on the airline to prove that the mishap did not occur due to its conduct, or that it occurred due to the conduct of a third party.In such cases, families of Indian victims could also approach consumer fora under the Consumer Protection Act 2019. The consumer protection law is in addition to remedies available under the Montreal Convention as read with the Carriage by Air Act.For families of foreign passengers, legal options extend beyond India. Since the convention applies almost globally, they could file lawsuits in their home countries, where compensation standards may be higher.Air India has also offered ₹1 cr to the families of the deceased medical college students and staff, and people on the ground. Securing higher compensation is more challenging for families of victims on the ground. Both Carriage by Air Act and Consumer Protection Act are meant for passengers on the ill-fated aircraft. The next of kin of ground fatalities would have to approach a civil court in India seeking compensation under Fatal Accidents Act 1855, which provides compensation to the family of a person who dies in the case of wrongful accidents.Another option is a tort law claim, where damages for negligence could be sought. In both these options, Air India would be liable if it's at fault - that is, if the accident was a result of its act, omission or oversight. The total compensation payout to victims could well exceed ₹1,000 cr. Beyond victim compensation, Air India also faces significant costs for property damage, aircraft loss, emergency response and disrupted flights.Globally, the compensation payout in cases of similar incidents has touched ₹4,500 cr ($500 mn). Air India likely maintains adequate insurance coverage that would cover these costs, or at least a substantial part. But if claims exceed coverage, the financial hit could be severe.

India's Andaman Region: A Hidden Treasure of Oil Reserves?
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Puri said India holds the potential of 'several Guyanas' in the Andaman region and outlined several measures taken by the government for exploration and production. The minister said that the country has 3.5 million square kilometers of sedimentary basin, but it never explored beyond eight per cent area, keeping a large expanse of sea beds unexplored. The minister's statement comes as India is putting in efforts to ramp up its own traditional fossil-based energy production. So one of the decisions which we took was that 1 million square kilometers of that sedimentary basin, which was no-go area, has suddenly been made available for E&P," Puri told ANI on Monday. The petroleum minister said that the government has decided to explore a large part of the basin. He said that India imported 80 per cent of oil and 50 per cent of natural gas, adding that even a 5-billion-barrel discovery would be a game-changer. In the nine rounds of open acreage licensing policy, 38 per cent of the bids have come, covering 1 million square kilometers, the minister said, adding that the next round will attract more than 75 per cent of the bids. "We've also issued some of the largest bids on offer anywhere -- something like 2.5 lakh square kilometers of area has been offered out on bidding," the minister said. PIB fact-checks He further said that India has the potential of around 42 billion tonnes of oil and gas in its sedimentary basins. He, however, added that exploring offshore reserves are capital extensive, which is why it took so much time for the country to tap into the untapped potential under the seas. "An onshore well costs something like USD 4 million on an average. I'm talking about global rates and dollar rates being held at a particular constant. And an offshore well costs about USD 100 million," he added. Hardeep Puri also made a reference to Guyana, which recently discovered massive oil reserves, saying India has the potential for 'several Guyanas' in the Andaman region. "They (Guyana) dug 46 wells and they didn't find any oil. It's when they dug the 47th one, they found oil. And then it became the largest find," he said. "We have the potential of several Guyanas in the Andaman," he added. Highlighting some of the recent oil discoveries, the minister said that Suryamani has a potential of 4 million metric tons worth of oil, while it is 1.2 million metric tons in Neelmani. In another well, at a depth of 2,865 metres, both oil and gas reserves were found, the minister said, stressing that this is an "underestimation."

Vidya, a software engineer for over 14 years and in her late thirties, was looking to switch her job earlier this year. When she applied to India's second-largest software services company, Infosys , one of her four rounds of interview was with an AI-chatbot. 'A male voice command asked me about myself and 8–10 techno-functional and managerial questions, along with subtitles. The interview was through an online link and lasted around 15 minutes. It was interesting to see a computer-based questioning. I felt more confident,' said Vidya, whose resume was also shortlisted through AI. ETtech When she finally landed the coveted job, Vidya was among the thousands of engineers and developers being interviewed by AI as part of the latest next-gen recruitment process at India's top software service providers. 'AI enables us to dynamically map candidates to panelists, trigger interviews on the fly, and even leverage facial recognition algorithms in our interview tool,' Mathew said without sharing specific numbers. Infosys uses an AI-based facial recognition process that compares images from interviews and induction to prevent impersonation on Day 1. HCLTech is using AI to reimagine how the company attracts, assesses, and hires talent through its proprietary AI-backed platform, said its chief people officer Ramachandran Sundararajan. The firm uses the platform across all levels in their projects and programs. 'A group of AI agents augment our internal and external staffing teams to enhance job descriptions, determine the skill and competency evaluation expectations for candidate assessment, screen CVs to help shortlist, assist our technical panels in interviews and provide a second opinion of the candidate for the job,' Sundararajan said. To date, AI has helped in screening and processing over 45,000 open positions at HCLTech. Neeti Sharma, CEO of Teamlease Digital said, AI is helping save recruiters approximately 23 hours weekly. 'While exact numbers of AI-driven hires are hard to pin down, IT firms hiring tens of thousands annually rely on AI for 70–80% of initial screenings, with AI-led processes boosting interview success rates by 53%.' Meanwhile, conversational AI is still in an exploratory stage and is being used for 15–20% of their total hiring, Sharma adds. Sanjeev Jain, COO of Wipro says it has initiated AI pilots from April at key stages—from initial resume screening and first-level interviews to communication assessments, background checks, onboarding, and even simulations for client interviews. This, according to him, not only helps optimise time and costs but also subconscious bias at early stages. 'Most importantly, it allows us to onboard and deploy talent on client projects faster, ensuring we stay agile and responsive to business needs. As we continue to evolve our talent strategy, AI will remain a critical enabler,' Jain added. ETtech Outsourcing majors, including TCS, Tech Mahindra and others are also using AI for their recruitment process. Companies are using AI to filter and rank the top profiles, for intelligent screening and skill-based assessments, significantly reducing manual screening time and doing video interviews powered by behavioural and sentiment analysis. They are also using predictive analytics to assess how well a candidate aligns with past successful hires in similar roles thereby improving the quality and consistency of hiring decisions. However, Vidya felt that she was lucky to have got through. 'One concern was the English, and even the database test was difficult to understand initially. I also was not sure if they could absorb or recognise my accent or language, because the follow-up questions at times were not linked.' Richard Lobo, chief people officer at Mahindra Group subsidiary Tech Mahindra, India's fifth largest IT firm said, 'We believe that AI is not here to replace human judgment but to refine and elevate it—especially in recruitment, where precision and speed are critical…We are continuously investing in rebuilding our training infrastructure.'

Most AI 171 passengers listed own numbers, not emergency contacts
Ahmedabad: When tragedy strikes, the smallest gaps in systems become painfully visible. As volunteers manning the helpdesk raced to notify families after the AI 171 crash, they hit an unexpected wall. Most calls were met with an eerie silence. The reason: in most of the cases, the only number provided was the passenger's own. With phones lost in the wreckage, and no alternate contacts available, authorities scrambled to locate next of kin. The lapse delayed the delivery of devastating news and complicated the coordination of support. Experts now say this oversight must push a rethink of how ticketing systems handle emergency contact details. "This was a huge challenge," said a senior official involved in the communication efforts. "In nearly 70% of cases, we found the only number listed was that of the passenger. So, when we tried to reach out to families, the calls went un-answered, with the phones lying at the crash site, damaged or lost," the official said. "We contacted the collectors and got them to visit the listed addresses to inform relatives in person. It led to a delay in some cases," the official added. TOI reviewed airline and travel booking websites, only to find that many plat-forms do not even ask for an emergency contact at the time of booking. "It's not built into the system," said an expert. "This tragedy underlined the gap in basic information protocols. It's something airlines and platforms must consider fixing." Sanjeev Chhajer, mentor of the tourism committee of the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), echoed the concern. "Many airlines or booking portals demand two numbers at the time of ticket booking while some ask for just one. Most people provide their own number to receive travel updates. But even in the emergency contact field, many repeat their own number," he said. "There should be a mandatory rule: one number must be of the passenger, and the emergency contact should be a different number, preferably of a family member or close friend. This practice can help a lot in case of any emergency," he added.
