Nissan plans to double India production to 200,000 units by 2027
Nissan Motor India is targeting a production of 200,000 vehicles by the end of FY27, half of which will be exported, its Managing Director, Saurabh Vatsa, said at a media roundtable on May 28. The company will also be investing $700 million for its future portfolio of vehicles that will be launched during the period between 2025 and 2027.
So, the underlying message of the press meet-- that Nissan was not going anywhere and would be staying put in India even while it had sold its 51 per cent stake in its manufacturing operations in the country to Renault.
The output planned for 2026-27 will be twice as much from last fiscal, which saw 100,000 vehicles produced at the Chennai facility with overseas shipments accounting for a lion's share at 72,000 units. 'We continue to produce the Magnite, continue to export volumes from India, continue to supply vehicles in the domestic market and continue to be on track to launch our new vehicles,' reiterated Vatsa.
Its planned launch--the B-segment multipurpose vehicle-- will debut in Q1 of calendar 2026, followed by the C SUV 5 seater and the C SUV 7 seater in early 2027. With Magnite already being exported to over 65 countries, there is 'no reason' why these new vehicles will not be sent to these locations either, Vatsa pointed out.
'What is really important to see is that this year, which is one year minus the new products, we have a future runway defined for our network. As Nissan is getting ready to expand its future product portfolio, a lot of new (dealer) partners are now approaching us because they can now see that we are going to grow from one car portfolio to a multiple car portfolio in multiple segments with multiple powertrain options,' said Vatsa.
Hence, it was 'fairly exciting' for these new partners to now start 'approaching us' at the same point in time. 'Our dealers and partners will play a significant role in enhancing the product portfolio volumes into the market. This year we will close almost 180 (dealership) locations,' he continued.
Nissan's play in alternative fuels
Nissan also announced the launch of the CNG-powered Magnite as an additional offering in its product portfolio. The company states that the fitment of these kits will be carried out at government-authorised centres-- which will cost around ₹74,999.
The CNG option will be available in Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana before it extends to other parts of the country in the second phase. The kit will be available from June 1.
'Nissan is getting ready to make sure that its customers who are looking for the CNG option are now being provided with the same,' said Vatsa. Magnite engines are also E20-compliant which will help intensify the effort in cleaner vehicular emissions.
'Magnite was always a full option SUV that is now further enhanced. We had two engine options — a naturally aspirated BR10 and a turbo HR10. Along with that we had three powertrain options: manual transmission, AMT and an extremely capable CVT,' he explained.
On top of that now, both engines have become E20-compliant. Beyond this, the automaker will now offer CNG with manual transmission on the BR10 engine which is the non-turbo engine. The other piece of welcome news, said Vatsa, was that this month would see the Magnite complete 200,000 units in sales.
'All this is part of the big, new Nissan. We are very agile at the moment and our dealer partners are leading this (CNG) initiative on the ground. We are also very cognisant of our dealer business model and want to make sure that they are profitable,' said Vatsa. The key is to ensure that they have the flexibility and agility to provide solutions to customers. Nissan is looking at volumes of 2,500 to 3,000 units in the first year of its CNG drive which will increase once its availability increases across the country after the first phase.
'We have one of the largest boot spaces in the category and are fairly confident and this is not an issue at all when it comes to the weight of the cylinder and the gas in it,' he added.

MTC to replace 100 old small buses with new BSVI-compliant vehicles in Chennai
CHENNAI: With the private mini buses all set to start operations in Chennai from the second week of June, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has decided to replace 100 existing small buses with new ones. The state-run transport body, which caters to Chennai and its suburban regions, will procure 100 BSVI-compliant mini buses at an estimated cost of Rs 34 crore. Tenders were floated recently. These new vehicles will ply on existing routes and are intended to improve last-mile connectivity from metro stations and other key locations. T PrabhuShankar, managing director of MTC, told TNIE the current fleet of small buses has been in use for 11 years. 'These buses will be replaced with new ones. At this stage, we are not planning to expand the small bus fleet,' he said. To further strengthen last-mile connectivity, a joint study is under way with the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA). 'Based on the study's findings, we will explore the possibility of expanding small bus services wherever necessary,' he added. Currently, MTC operates 146 small buses in Chennai, including 56 that connect interior areas with metro rail stations. Of these, 22 buses function exclusively as feeder services for the metro. The remaining small buses serve as general public transport, particularly in areas that cannot accommodate larger buses. According to regulations, standard MTC buses require a minimum road width of 40 feet. To provide connectivity in interior areas with narrower roads (20 to 30 feet wide), small buses were introduced in the city in 2013. At present, small buses serve eight metro stations: Koyambedu, CMBT, Thirumangalam, Alandur, Chennai Airport, Wimco Nagar, Guindy, and Little Mount. MTC officials noted work is ongoing to develop new feeder routes for metro stations in high-demand areas. 'CUMTA's study will also identify feeder routes for all metro stations. This initiative will benefit both MTC and metro rail services,' they said. Meanwhile, private mini buses approved by the state transport department will operate in seven zones within Chennai, as well as the Avadi and Tambaram city corporations. The designated route lengths will range between 10 and 20 kilometres.
