A star may have survived partial black hole spaghettification
The term for this gruesome process is actually "spaghettification," according to NASA, inspired by Stephen Hawking's book, A Brief History of Time. In it, the late theoretical physicist first described what would happen to a person approaching a black hole's "event horizon" — its point of no return — in space.
Astronomers used to think this was an immediate death sentence for a star. Now an international team, led by Tel Aviv University in Israel, has published the first confirmed case of a star surviving such a brush, only to return 700 days later for another go.
The findings, which appear in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, don't contradict the concept of spaghettification but show that it could be a repeatable process for some stars, said Iair Arcavi, who supervised the research.
"A star isn't a uniform ball of matter," Arcavi told Mashable. "The inner part is more dense, and the outer part is more 'fluffy.' So the outer part is more easily spaghettified. If the star kept to some distance from the black hole, it could avoid the denser parts from getting spaghettified, too."
Black holes are some of the most inscrutable phenomena in the universe. They are regions in space where gravity is so intense that nothing, not even light, can escape. About 50 years ago, they were little more than a theory — a kooky mathematical solution to a physics problem. Even astronomers at the top of their field weren't entirely convinced they existed.
Today, not only are black holes accepted science, they're getting their pictures taken by a collection of enormous, synced-up radio dishes on Earth. Humanity got a clear view of Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the center of the galaxy, for the first time in 2022.
Last year, Tel Aviv University researchers spotted a tidal disruption event (TDE) near the center of a galaxy about 400 million light-years away using the Las Cumbres Observatory, a network of robotic telescopes around the world, designed to keep a close eye on rapid cosmic events. These TDEs are bright flares that occur when a black hole is destroying a star.
What shocked them was that the flare was almost identical to another that occurred two years earlier, called AT 2022dbl, from the exact same location. After analyzing the data, scientists ruled out other explanations, like unrelated flares or gravitational lensing, and concluded that the same star was partially torn apart twice.
Typically, when a star is pulled toward a black hole, its near side is stretched and pulled in while the far side is flung out. The resulting stream of gas and debris spirals around the black hole as it falls in — sort of like water circling a bathtub drain. These bursts of energy can outshine an entire galaxy, briefly illuminating the hidden black hole lurking at the heart of a galaxy.
Over the past decade, astronomers have observed dozens of these flares. But one thing has perplexed them: Based on computer simulations, most of these events seem kind of weak. Previously, scientists had assumed the discrepancy between real and virtual flares has been due to knowledge gaps or the limitations of computer models.
But AT 2022dbl's repeating flare may offer a simpler explanation. The star may not have been completely annihilated on its first trip around the black hole. Then, like a masochist, it returned roughly two years later to be damaged again.
The study suggests it's possible many of these flares, once thought the calling cards of stellar death, aren't necessarily fatal events. The question now is whether this particular star is finally dead or if it'll be back again next year for more abuse.
Either way, Arcavi said, astronomers will have to rethink these flares and what they say about the monsters lying in wait.

While there's no risk of that happening in this case, our interstellar friend (it is friendly, right?) is projected to pass between the Earth and Mars. What is it? According to EarthSky, it is likely a 12-mile wide asteroid or comet from way, way out of town that just happens to be passing through our neighborhood. In fact, scientists only first detected an extrasolar object in 2017. Per EarthSky, this object, called 'Oumuamua, was... well, nobody knows what it was, actually. That is comforting and I will sleep well tonight. The second object, named Borisov, was spotted in 2019 and was a comet. Sure. Definitely a comet. This third object should get closest to Earth in October and is projected to be the fastest of the three so far at around 90 km/s. Objects hurtling through space are hard to detect, so the thinking is that interstellar visits like this happen with some regularity, and we're only just now getting better at noticing them. That, or something started intentionally sending stuff our way a few years ago, and it's ramping up now. Maybe because we're getting so easy for aliens to find. Nah, it's probably the former. We're fine. So if you happen to live in a high-population city anywhere on Earth, you should just stay put and not pay any attention to this at all. After all, Independence Day is coming up! NASA readying for crewed Artemis II moon flight

The Artemis II mission will demonstrate a variety of capabilities that are needed to complete deep-space missions, including those to the moon and Mars, the space agency said. The Artemis II crew is comprised of mission commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. Hansen is from the Canadian Space Agency and will join the three NASA astronauts to make the mission an international endeavor. The Artemis II mission will confirm all of the spacecraft's systems and equipment will work as intended while supporting a crew of four in deep space. The mission also enables long-term exploration and science missions on the moon's surface. A Space Launch System super-heavy-lift rocket will launch an Orion spacecraft and its crew into space for the 10-day mission. Orion's European-built service module enables the spacecraft to break away from Earth's orbit and reach the moon by using an injection burn. The mission will carry the spacecraft and crew on a figure-eight course extending more than 230,000 miles from Earth and 4,600 miles beyond the moon. It will take four days to go beyond the moon and another four days to return to Earth. A prior uncrewed Artemis I mission was launched in November 2022 and orbited the moon. It was NASA's first moon mission since the space agency cancelled its Apollo program in December 1972. India launches NASA-ISRO satellite to track climate threats from space
India launched on Wednesday a $1.5 billion, first-of-its-kind radar imaging satellite built in collaboration with NASA, deploying it to help enhance global monitoring of climate change and natural disasters. The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar, or NISAR satellite, is the first such collaboration between the Indian Space Research Organization and U.S. space agency NASA. It took off from India's Satish Dhawan Space Centre at 1210 GMT atop a medium-lift rocket, marking a milestone in space cooperation and bolstering India's profile in low-cost, high-impact satellite missions. 3 With the help of NASA, India has launched a $1.5 billion satellite into orbit. NISAR is the world's first radar imaging satellite to use two radar frequencies – the L-band provided by NASA and the S-band developed by ISRO – to track minute changes in the Earth's surface, including movements as small as a centimeter, the space agencies have said. The satellite, roughly the size and weight of a fully loaded pickup truck – was placed into a near-polar Sun-synchronous orbit approximately 747 km (464 miles) above Earth. It will map the planet every 12 days using a 240-km-wide radar swath, offering data to scientists and disaster response agencies to monitor everything from glacier retreat in the Himalayas to potential landslide zones in South America. 'The potential applications from the satellite are huge, and the global scientific community is eagerly awaiting the satellite data for their respective research and usage,' ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said after the launch. 3 The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar is the first collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organization. NASA 'It is not going to be used by one or two countries. The entire globe is going to benefit from this great accomplishment,' he said, adding that the mission had brought the two space agencies much closer than ever before. Casey Swails, NASA's deputy associate administrator, called the mission a 'pathfinder'. India has said it aims to build its own space station by 2035 and send astronauts to the moon in partnership with other countries as part of a broader vision to expand commercial and scientific activities in space.
