Pahang Fire Dept urges vigilance after 14 drowning deaths in 4 months
KUANTAN: The Pahang Fire and Rescue Department has expressed concern over the deaths of 14 individuals due to drowning in the first four months of this year.
Its director Mohd Razam Taja Rahim said the victims were reported to have drowned in rivers, canals, beaches, lakes, mining ponds and waterfalls.
He said that although the figure is lower than the 24 drowning deaths recorded statewide from January to April last year, necessary safety and preventive measures must still be taken during water-related activities.
"The risk of drowning can be avoided if safety is prioritised by the public when entering the water.
"People must be aware of the dangers posed by natural water bodies.
"During unpredictable weather conditions, especially heavy rain, those planning to engage in water activities must take extra precautions.
"Parents must closely monitor their children, especially at waterfalls and rivers where sudden kepala air (surge of water) incidents can occur," he told reporters today after the Fire Safety Organisation Seminar 2025, launched by Pahang State Secretary Datuk Nazri Abu Bakar at a hotel here.
Razam urged parents to be vigilant and keep track of their children's whereabouts during the upcoming school holidays to prevent untoward incidents, particularly those involving water recreation.
Meanwhile, Razam said the department currently has 1,828 officers and personnel, including auxiliary firefighters, ready to be deployed during emergencies across the state.
He said the department remains on high alert and in constant communication with other rescue agencies during the festive period, as well as the monsoon and dry seasons, to ensure effective coordination of rescue efforts.

KUANTAN: The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) of Pahang has advised parents and guardians to take appropriate safety measures and to monitor their children's movements during the coming school holidays to avoid any untoward incidents. Meanwhile, he said a total of 293 premises have been identified and designated as subject to compliance with fire safety regulations, including having a fire certificate (FC) in Pahang. Compliance, he said, was important to ensure life safety and minimise property losses, with owners of premises whose FCs had expired being advised to renew the certificates to ensure the buildings or premises involved were safe to live in.
