Special celebration as 15th Coatbridge Boys Brigade win battalion trophy
The group's junior section won the prestigious award for the first time in their group's 50th anniversary session

Young members of 15th Coatbridge Boys Brigade helped the group celebrate its 50th anniversary year in style by winning some prestigious silverware for the first time in their history.
The junior section was named as the best in Airdrie, Coatbridge & district battalion after its 28 members, in the Primary Four to Six age group, won three of the area's competitions during the year and placed in the top three in a further four.
It marks the first time in 15th Coatbridge's history that the group's name will be engraved on the battalion challenge trophy; and was a proud final juniors achievement for more than half of the section's members as they prepare to move up to the company section next month.

The 15th Coatbridge juniors won the battalion's five-a-side tournament and scripture knowledge shield, and were joint winners of the board games competition on their way to winning the overall trophy, competing against fellow Boys Brigade members from all over Monklands.
Junior section officer in charge Paul O'Shea said: 'We are extremely proud of this group of young men; they gave their absolute all to every event. It's a tremendous achievement for them and is historic in that it's our first, after 50 years of trying.
'We also said goodbye to 17 of these guys as they are now promoted to the company section, and we wish them well as they grow and develop in the Boys Brigade.'
Based at Blairhill Dundyvan church, 15th Coatbridge Boys celebrated the group's 50th birthday in December after being formed through the amalgamation of two companies in 1974 following a church merger.
The junior section's oldest and youngest members collected the battalion trophy on behalf of the whole group from battalion president Derek Craig at their annual end-of-term display and prizegiving.
Members of the company section, aged from P7 to S6, came an impressive third in their respective battalion competition and won the best company section title in each of the previous two years.
Now 15th Coatbridge are getting set for the new session and are welcoming new members to join their weekly Friday sessions at Blairhill Dundyvan church.

The Diamonds beat Montrose 2-1 against Montrose at Arbroath's Gayfield last night Goals from Euan Henderson and Lewis McGrattan handed Airdrie a 2-1 Premier Sports Cup win over Montrose last night, that sets up a C 'winner takes it all' showdown at home to Alloa Athletic at New Broomfield on Saturday. A late rally from Montrose wasn't enough to stop the Diamonds from going top of the group on goal difference, with both themselves and Alloa on maximum nine points from their three games so far. Two goals in six second-half minutes sent Airdrie through. Henderson opened the scoring in 56 minutes, when he darted down the left flank and tried to pick out Chris Mochrie. Though the Diamonds No.7 didn't get a touch on the ball, he did enough to put off the Montrose defence and the cross squeezed in at the far post. McGrattan netted the second in 62 and Henderson was again the architect, driving in from the left and forcing a save from Campbell Millar, and while Henderson was tripped by a defender, McGrattan steered the ball in. Ewan Loudon beat Cade Melrose with a powerful effort from just inside the box, as the Diamonds conceded for the first time in the group stages, but it wasn't enough to prevent Airdrie from going through. Airdrie had other chances to score, and in 10 minutes Jamie Barjonas sent Henderson through on Aaron Clark, who did well to block with his foot. Loudon had a chance to net the rebound from a Melrose save, but Sean McGinty bravely blocked to keep the score at 0-0. Alex King and Liam McStravick had efforts blocked, before Dylan MacDonald's cross was headed wide by McStravick. McStravick sent an effort curling past the top corner as the half remained goal-less. Airdrie took the lead, and Mochrie sent an effort whistling past a post moments later. Henderson curled an effort over in 71 minutes, following good play by Mochrie. Montrose pulled a goal back and a flurry of free kicks around the Airdrie box made for a nervy end to the match, but the closest the hosts came was when sub Matheus Machado sent an effort narrowly over.

Hearts finish League Cup group campaign with 100% record
Hearts finished off their League Cup group campaign with a fourth four-goal victory. Derek McInnes saw his side secure progress to the second round – almost certainly as one of the seeded teams – with a 4-0 triumph over Dumbarton. Lawrence Shankland headed the opener in the 17th minute from Stephen Kingsley's cross and Michael Steinwender headed home from a corner seconds before the half-time whistle. Scott Tomlinson almost stunned the home support in the opening seconds of the second half when he hit the bar from a tight angle after robbing Kingsley of possession near the corner flag. But Hearts were soon back in control and Alexandros Kyziridis scored his second goal in as many games as the winger jinked his way into the box before sending an angled drive just inside the far post. Claudio Braga then converted Cammy Devlin's cutback in the 72nd minute to move Hearts on to a goal difference of 11 and ensure they will be the only top-flight side to boast a perfect record in the group stage. Championship Airdrie continued their 100 per cent record with a 2-1 victory over Montrose to move above Alloa on goal difference in Group C. The group will be decided on Saturday when Alloa visit Lanarkshire in a winner-takes-all tie. Gartcairn's final pre-season clash comes at a cost ahead of Whitletts opener
The Airdrie side are gearing up for the West of Scotland First Division Gartcairn co-boss Darren Barr was happy to end pre-season on a winning note but admits it came at a cost ahead of Saturday's West of Scotland First Division opener at Whitletts Victoria. The Airdrie-based outfit ran out 2-1 winners away to East of Scotland Premier champions Musselburgh Athletic at the weekend, with Dom Morgan and Stefan McCluskey on target. But Barr's side finished the game with 10 men after left-back Jordan Allan was shown a straight red card, while Kyle Hutton is facing a fitness test after picking up a knock. Barr said: 'The boys put in a really good performance on the eve of the season starting, so it gives them a bit of belief because Musselburgh are a good team and they did really well last year, winning their league. We had a really good 60-65 minutes. 'There's a few people that were still on holiday and some injuries to contend with. Kyle Hutton took a sore one so we will need to see how he is as the week progresses and we had a man sent off as well, so those two things put a bit of a dampener on it a bit.' Gartcairn are among the favourites for the title having been relegated from the top flight last season, but Barr is sure his players can handle that expectation. He added: 'Looking at the squad, we are in decent place and we are still building. Pre-season is all about getting minutes in the legs and get the partnerships going, working cohesively, so Saturday was a good step towards that. 'Pressure of being one of the favourites is fine. You've obviously got Darvel in there and a few others, so I think it is going to be a really strong league. 'Some people might have us as favourites but there are plenty of other strong sides in there. 'We'd love a winning start but I'd rather have a strong finish to the season, that is the most important thing. 'The boys know the pressure on them, but all we'll do is take it one game at a time and focus on the way we want to play. 'With the quality in the squad we know we can compete.' On the Whitletts clash, he added: 'I'm expecting a really tough match. We've watched Whitletts a couple of times and they will give us a really hard first game. 'It is about how we approach it and we will prepare them as best we can. Hopefully we can get off to a positive start.'
