Sean Dyche lined up for managerial return after boss drops big hint on future

Daily Mirror11-05-2025

Sean Dyche has been out of the managerial game for the last four months following his Everton dismissal but the 53-year-old could be set for a return to the dugout
Former Everton and Burnley manager Sean Dyche is on Leicester City's radar, it has been claimed. The links come after Foxes boss Ruud van Nistelrooy hinted he won't remain at the King Power Stadium next season following relegation.
Van Nistelrooy joined Leicester before the turn of the year after impressing during a short stint as Manchester United's interim manager. The Dutchman has overseen some dismal league form, though, with the team's relegation confirmed in April.

Dyche has been out of work since January, when he left Everton amid relegation fears. His successor David Moyes has helped the club stave off that threat, while Dyche has been biding his time before deciding what comes next.

According to The Sun, an opportunity could present itself in the East Midlands. Leicester are said to want a manager with a history of earning promotion from the Championship - something which Dyche achieved twice with Burnley.
Liam Manning and Russell Martin have also been linked, amid some desire for a younger manager. However, the same publication points to the financial pressure of bouncing straight back as Leicester's motivation for targeting the 53-year-old.
In a press conference ahead of Leicester's Sunday afternoon trip to Nottingham Forest, Van Nistelrooy stopped short of confirming his Leicester exit but dropped a fresh hint on his future. "The responsibility of the manager is that you're working and doing everything you can in the interest of the football club," the former PSV Eindhoven boss told reporters.
"That's the way I approach it. That's what the supporters can rely on, that I do that. And so the job that from day to day is, of course, developing and performing in the short term, but also doing everything I can to leave the club in the best position possible.
"And that's also part of the job, although within this situation, sometimes it's hard to do because there are certain things that are not clear enough. So that clarity will only help. But within the circumstances, I'm doing everything I can for for this football club.

"You want to move forward, and that clarity is important and will only help. I don't need to explain in all whatever is linked to this, clarity is clear. No need to emphasise it again, but patience is asked here."
Southampton, one of Leicester's fellow relegated sides, are also on the lookout for a new permanent manager following Ivan Juric's exit. Simon Rusk has been in temporary charge, helping the Saints earn a point against Manchester City on Saturday which ensures they won't match Derby's unwanted record of the lowest ever Premier League points tally.
"We're not happy about how the season has gone but we're happy we've avoided that record," goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale said after the team earned just their 12th point of the campaign. "We're under no illusions that it's not a great points tally. The fans are happy in the sun smiling."

Championship clubs linked with moves for two senior Cardiff City stars

Championship clubs linked with moves for two senior Cardiff City stars The duo have been important players for the Bluebirds in recent times Callum Robinson (R) is reportedly the subject of transfer interest (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency Ltd ) Cardiff City duo Callum Robinson and Callum O'Dowda are reportedly the subject of interest from their former clubs in the Championship. The Bluebirds duo have been important players for the Welsh capital city club, with Robinson ending last season as top scorer, with O'Dowda having worn the captain's armband on a number of occasions after being elevated to a leadership position within the squad. Both are seen as Championship-standard players, and there appears to be early summer interest in them. ‌ According to the Irish Examiner, second-tier side Preston North End are keen on forward Robinson. ‌ The 30-year-old launched his career at Deepdale, signing for them permanently after impressing during two loan spells from Aston Villa. He went on to score 29 league goals in 110 appearance for the club before signing for Sheffield United in 2019. Fellow Irishman O'Dowda is apparently the subject of transfer interest from Oxford United, the club at which he, too, started his career, having come up through the youth ranks there. O'Dowda, also 30, enjoyed three seasons with the U's, then in League Two, before earning a Championship move to Bristol City in 2016. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community Article continues below Both players signed new contracts with Cardiff earlier in the season, with Robinson committing until 2027 and O'Dowda penning terms until 2028. As such, any deal to prise them away from Cardiff City Stadium will mean a decent-sized transfer fee from any prospective buyers. It is understood Cardiff are keen to get their manager in before sanctioning any sales, however it is also likely that a number of players will leave this summer. ‌ Speaking last month, chairman Mehmet Dalman confirmed the squad would be cut down in size for the League One campaign. 'We have 33 players on our books and that's quite a lot. I think that needs to be cut back to more like 25 or 26," Dalman said. "Out of the eight who are out of contract, we would probably lose six, maybe five. Article continues below "There may be a couple that we still want to have conversations with. That will bring us to a sensible number. "We probably need to add three or four players into the team." Last week Cardiff confirmed a raft of exits, including Aaron Ramsey, Anwar El Ghazi, Yakou Meite and Dimitrios Goutas, while the club remains in talks with Andy Rinomhota and Joe Ralls. Enzo Maresca told harsh reality of Chelsea transfer pursuit and total cost

Chelsea have been told to prepare to spend more than expected if they want to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, who is also being tracked by Manchester United Chelsea legend Florent Malouda has warned that the club could end up paying a hefty sum for Hugo Ekitike. The west London club are interested in the striker, who has shone at Eintracht Frankfurt. In a quick move to rejuvenate their attack, Chelsea have already signed Liam Delap after forking out £30million to activate his Ipswich Town release clause. With plans to pit the young striker against Nicolas Jackson, Chelsea also remain interested in Ekitike but any deal will be expensive for Enzo Maresca's side. ‌ After notching up an impressive tally of 22 goals and 12 assists across all competitions this season, the French forward's price tag could rise above £100m. That's according to Chelsea icon Malouda, who has admitted that Ekitike has what it takes to succeed at Stamford Bridge. ‌ Despite welcoming Delap aboard, Chelsea remain interested in Ekitike, with the German club placing an £85m price tag on their star striker, as per While Chelsea are unlikely to meet Frankfurt's valuation, Malouda wouldn't be shocked if Ekitike's price climbed even higher. "Hugo Ekitike would be a good option for Chelsea because, even though he didn't play much for PSG, he has experience of competitive squads," Malouda said to bet365. "He has potential to score 20-plus goals in the Premier League. It just comes down to price. When German clubs see Chelsea, the price tag will be £100million plus. It's a question of price." Chelsea hold the 22-year-old forward in high regard but are not expected to cough up the massive £85m asking price set by Frankfurt, despite other clubs monitoring the striker. Ekitike has also reportedly attracted interest from Manchester United. However, the Bundesliga outfit will not mind clubs being put off by Ekitike's price tag. Frankfurt achieved Champions League qualification after finishing third this season and are not in a rush to sell their prize asset. Eintracht Frankfurt's CEO Markus Krosche was clear regarding the potential sale of Ekitike. "If the price isn't right, then he'll just stay with us. We don't have to sell Hugo," he said. ‌ Having started off at Reims, Ekitike caught the eye and secured a move to PSG but struggled for game time. A loan to Frankfurt in February 2024 saw his fortunes change for the better. Chelsea's interest in Ekitike is not thought to harm Jackson's future at the club. The 23-year-old forward scored 13 goals across his second season at Stamford Bridge. ‌ On the other hand, Christopher Nkunku, once on the radar of United and Bayern Munich, is likely to leave this summer. Despite his future potentially being elsewhere, Chelsea have named the forward in their Club World Cup squad. The Blues face LAFC in their opening Club World Cup game tonight (8pm), with further group matches against Brazilian club Flamengo (Friday, 7pm) and Tunisian team ES Tunis (25 June, 2am) Florent Malouda was speaking on behalf of bet365 and their launch of the free-to-play Club World Championship Tournament Predictor game. 'Everything about him screams success'

In Florian Wirtz, Liverpool have got "as close to a guarantee as you can get" that a player will be a success in the Premier League, says BBC Sport senior football correspondent Sami was reported on Friday that the Reds have agreed a £116m deal to sign Germany attacking midfielder Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, with the initial £100m fee a club 22-year-old made his debut for Leverkusen at the age of 17, scoring 57 goals in 197 games for the club, and helped them win the Bundesliga for the first time in 2024."He seems to have everything to cope with the rigors of European football," Mokbel told BBC Radio Merseyside."He might be quite short, but he looks strong, his touch is beautiful, he is great in transition, he takes the ball on the half turn, everything about him screams success - he will be a success in English football."There is never a guarantee with these things, you are spending a lot of money but there is never a cast-iron guarantee that a player from abroad with adapt to Premier League football."What I think Liverpool have got with Florian Wirtz is as close to a guarantee as you can get that a player will adapt to play in England and be a success. I think he is that good."Wirtz is already one of the Bundesliga's top performers at the age of 22, largely operating as a number 10 - a dynamic playmaker blessed with pace, awareness and the ability to make clever decisions at high was the most effective dribbler of all Bundesliga players last season, both in terms of volume and accuracy while carrying the of his 31 Bundesliga appearances in 2024-25 came in an attacking midfield/number 10 berth, although he does tend to drift towards the left wing."His best position, and the position that has been earmarked him for him in talks with Arne Slot, is that number 10 central role," German football expert Raphael Honigstein told BBC Radio 5 Live."In a slightly reshuffled Liverpool, more Dutch and more 'Arne Slot' team."He will be the fulcrum in attack. A player who can pick up spaces between the lines, has an eye for the killer ball but never loses sight of the goal. He can score goals himself and is very tenacious."A very modern number 10 and a player a lot of clubs wanted."Listen to the full discussion with Mokbel on BBC SoundsRead more about where Wirtz will fit into Liverpool's side
