UFC 319 challenger Khamzat Chimaev barely worrying about Saturday, let alone second belt

USA Today4 days ago
CHICAGO – Khamzat Chimaev might have designs on multiple titles some day, but until he gets the first one, there's no counting chickens, it seems.
Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) gets his shot at UFC greatness Saturday in the UFC 319 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) main event at United Center in Chicago when he challenges champion Dricus Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) for the middleweight title.
Chimaev would be the 15th fighter in UFC history to win a title while unbeaten. And Chimaev is the betting favorite as the challenger, which is rare, though it does happen. But the stars, many seem to think, have been aligned for Chimaev to win the belt.
Given he has fought at welterweight before – though with some infamous struggles – there always will be a threat for him to try for a belt in a second division.
In fact, Chimaev said he's not even thinking about what will happen Saturday, let alone if he wins the title and wants to go to welterweight.
"I don't know (how the fight will go). We'll see in the cage. It's too early to think about these things," Chimaev told MMA Junkie and other reporters at the UFC 319 media day Wednesday. "When I see his face, then it's different."
A title win would mean Chimaev is likely to ask for a spot when the UFC returns to Abu Dhabi in October. He said the idea of who his first potential challenger could be isn't something he's thinking about.
"After the fight, we'll see what's going on. Let's first focus on this guy, and after that, we'll see," Chimaev said.
Chimaev earned his title shot with a first-round brutal submission of former champion Robert Whittaker 10 months ago. He also holds wins over ex-welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in what is considered his toughest challenge.
Champ Du Plessis is seeking his third defense after a submission of former champs Israel Adesanya and, in a rematch, Sean Strickland. He hasn't lost in nearly seven years.

Baisangur Susurkaev says he'll be middleweight champ within two years after UFC 319

CHICAGO – Baisangur Susurkaev met with MMA Junkie and other media members Saturday after his win over Tom Nolan at UFC 319. Susurkaev (10-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) got put through some first-round adversity to close out the preliminary card at United Center in Chicago, but ultimately made good on his massive pre-fight betting odds as a more than 10-1 favorite in the middleweight bout against Nolan (9-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) when he tapped him with a second-round rear-naked choke. Susurkaev was making his UFC debut, but it came only four days after he won a fight – and the adoration of UFC CEO Dana White – on DWCS to earn a contract. He said he wanted to be on UFC 319 as an undercard fight for his countryman Khamzat Chimaev, and White obliged. Then Susurkaev obliged with his second win in four days. And that DWCS bout? That one came on four days' notice, as well, as a fill-in. Now that Susurkaev has made a big name for himself early, he doesn't want to slow down too much. He's eyeing one more fight this year – and maybe a second. "I'm hoping for New York (in November). I really would like to fight in September, but I do feel like I have an injury in my foot, so I don't know if I'll be ready in time," Susurkaev said. But he knows the trajectory he wants to take. And even though Chimaev won the middleweight title a few fights after Susurkaev won his bout, he plans on having that belt one day, too. Chimaev has had high praise for Susurkaev, as well – and even said the 24-year-old fighter is better than him. "I don't think he really means it when he says it," Susurkaev said. "Of course I'm not better than him. He's the best. "In two more years, I'm going to be champion. I don't need it fast. One month, two months to get ready for the next fight, and I'm ready. I'm going to be champion." Check out Susurkaev's full post-fight interview in the video above.

NBA Insider offers \

When it comes to the current contract standoff between the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga, there doesn't appear to be an end in sight. Both sides seem to be pretty dug in on their current expectations of what a deal between the two parties should look like. However, ESPN's Ramona Shelburne believes she has an easy fix for both sides, which could potentially end the stalemate and get everyone back on the same page. Shelburne's idea would be to add an extra year to the Warriors' current contract offer. Shelburne's comments came via an Aug. 15 episode of ESPN's NBA Today. 'I think he's going to be on the Warriors,' Shelburne said. "And the only question is, how much are they paying him? I think there's an easy solution here, which is that the Warriors give him an extra year. It'll be like a two-plus-one, where he has a little more control, a little more guaranteed I do think the Warriors see him as somebody who's, if he wants to call it, a building block, I don't know if I would call it that, but somebody they want around for a long time, because they have 35-year-olds on their team. I know the owner, Joe Lacob has told him this. He loves Jonathan Kuminga. He is the reason that they've never included him in trades, because they see the potential in him.' The Warriors have reportedly offered Kuminga a two-year $45 million contract, with a team option on the second year, while also having him waive his no-trade clause. However, Kuminga would prefer a deal that allows him to keep some control over his future, as he sees the current offer as giving up too much power to control his own future. Shelburne's idea could solve the current rift between Kuminga and Golden State's front office. However, if he's dead set on signing his qualifying offer or forcing his way out of the franchise, no alterations the front office makes will be deemed good enough. It will be interesting to see how much longer this standoff lasts, and more importantly, how it ends. This post originally appeared on Warriors Wire! Follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

Carlos Prates labels Leon Edwards as 'first option' for UFC Rio de Janeiro

CHICAGO – Carlos Partes just wants to throw down on home soil – everything else is a bonus. Following his devastating knockout win at UFC 319, Prates (22-7 MMA, 5-1 UFC) took the microphone, pointed at UFC CEO Dana White, and called for a fight on the Oct. 11 UFC Fight Night event that's scheduled to go down in Rio de Janeiro. Fortunately for Prates, he immediately got the approval and the news on a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus. However, Prates wasn't done. He went on to call out a former UFC welterweight champion before exciting the cage. "I think the co-main event in Rio should be Carlos Prates against Leon Edwards," Prates said in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. "All respect for that guy, but the time is now." Meanwhile, UFC star Michael Page spoke to the media backstage after his decision win over Jared Cannonier. He was asked about potentially fighting Prates, and he was all in. Prates likes the matchup, but prefers getting a former UFC champion for his return. "Anybody who steps in the cage, but Rio, Oct. 11, I'll be there," Prates said backstage speaking with reporters. "The first option, of course, is Leon. I'm here to fight the best guys in the world so I can prove I'm the best in the world, so anybody who steps in the cage, I'm going to be there." If the promotion goes the Page route, Prates wouldn't be bothered. He likes the fight and said "Venom" was someone he had been watching for some time. "It's going to be good. It's going to be an interesting fight," Prates said regarding a potential fight with Page. "He inspired me for a long time, so if UFC give me him, that's OK: Let's fight."
