Bassam Freiha Art Foundation launches exhibitions by Italian artist Stefano Simontacchi (The Prism)

ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)Bassam Freiha Art Foundation (BFAF) on Saadiyat Island, will host two new exhibitions by Stefano Simontacchi, the Italian artist more commonly known as 'The Prism.'Curated by PhD philosopher and contemporary art theorist Marco Senaldi, the exhibitions Project Oneness and Trust, Gratitude and Love Journey will showcase The Prism's perspective and extensive creative depth. The exhibitions will transform light and space to create memorable and immersive experiences. Featuring dynamic interplays between form and colour, circular compositions, and reflective surfaces that allow viewers to incorporate their own image into the pieces, the two exhibitions will also be accompanied by a series of engaging public programmes.Focused on wellbeing, self-reflection and mindfulness, community members will have the chance to take part in sound healing sessions, guided meditations, yoga experiences, artist talks and interactive workshops.Curator and Director of Exhibitions at the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation, Michaela Watrelot PhD, said, 'Project Oneness and Trust, Gratitude and Love Journey are dedicated to the work of The Prism, also known as Stefano Simontacchi, an artist who has a unique talent for utilising light and space in new and interesting ways. Whether through the use of illuminated panels or polished metallic surfaces, he uses light to transform his work into dynamic, interactive experiences, and we are excited to see how his pieces will challenge perceptions, initiate conversations, and bring the community together here at the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation on Saadiyat Island. Based on circular emblems and innovative use of light and space, I want the exhibitions to bring the community of Abu Dhabi closer to art, and help every individual find inner peace.'The first part of The Prism at BFAF explores the notions of perception and interconnectedness through an immersive, multi-room experience that challenges the typical notions of form, light and symbolic meaning.Unfolded across three interconnected rooms, the first part of Project Oneness focuses on the concept of duality and emphasises mankind's connection with the universe.The second part then presents a space where colour, form and movement unfold without imposed separations, while the third features four works that each represent the essential elements – water, earth, air and fire. By the end of the exhibition, each viewer is left with a new sense and understanding of their Oneness with the universe.The Prism's second path symbolises the inner dynamism of Oneness. Located in the Annex Gallery, Trust, Gratitude and Love Journey explores why embracing the tools of Trust, Gratitude and Love allows individuals to connect with the energy of the universe. By integrating contemporary materials with timeless symbols, the exhibition provides a space for reflection, and it challenges the viewer to consider their place within a broader continuum of light, form, and meaning.

Hotel groups doing their bit to save water and energy, reduce waste and single-use plastics
4 June 2025 23:28 MAYS IBRAHIM (ABU DHABI)On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, hotels across the UAE are ramping up efforts to reduce waste, save energy and support local sustainability First Group Hospitality has placed sustainability at the core of its UAE operations. "Through our recycling programme, we have introduced structured waste separation and partnered with Veolia to divert significant volumes of food waste from landfill," Tom Stevens, Senior Vice President of Hotel Operations at The First Group Hospitality, told Aletihad . Energy and water-saving systems, solar integration, and a growing network of electric vehicle charging stations are also being introduced across the group's line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Dubai Sustainable Tourism strategy, The First Group Hospitality is also moving away from single-use plastics and embracing sustainably sourced materials in their properties."Our aim is not simply to adapt to shifting expectations, but to lead with purpose and ensure that exceptional hospitality is delivered with lasting environmental responsibility," Stevens Al Jaddaf, part of the global Barceló Hotel Group, is equally committed to local impact and environmental to Eduardo Espiritusanto, General Manager of Barceló Al Jaddaf, the hotel sources at least half of its fruit and vegetables from local producers. "In addition to this, the property has implemented a series of measures to reduce water and energy consumption, such as the installation of solar panels in the hotel and the use of high-pressure shower beads in the bathrooms of all rooms, reducing water consumption by 50%," Espiritusanto told Aletihad . Beyond infrastructure, Barceló Al Jaddaf also participates in community initiatives, including Earth Hour, Tree Planting Day, and food donations to the UAE Food by Hilton Jumeirah Beach is also playing a key role in driving hospitality sustainability forward in the UAE. "At our hotel, we have phased out single-use plastics by observing dedicated 'No Plastic Days' and replacing disposable items with reusable alternatives," Elif Yazoglu, General Manager of DoubleTree by Hilton Jumeirah Beach, told Aletihad . "Every plastic container is segregated through our structured recycling programme and handed over to certified vendors, ensuring that no plastic waste ends up in landfill or our oceans."In line with the World Environment Day 2025 theme, "Beat Plastic Pollution", the hotel takes part in campaigns such as "Recycle. Reforest. Repeat", where each 1,000kg of collected cartons funds the planting of a tree in partnership with the Emirates Environmental Group."Beyond plastic reduction, we support the nation's broader sustainability goals through energy-efficient technologies, such as 100% LED lighting, motion-sensor fixtures, 3M heat-resistant window film, and a Building Management System that optimises cooling," Yazoglu hotel also offers on-site electric vehicle charging stations and converts non-recyclable waste into energy, in collaboration with Dubai Municipality under its "No Waste to Landfill" policy. "By integrating responsible waste management, circular-economy practices, and energy-saving initiatives across our operations, we proudly contribute to a greener UAE and a future free of plastic pollution," Yazoglu said. Alcaraz bludgeons Paul to reach French Open semis
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz steamrolled past American 12th-seed Tommy Paul 6-0 6-1 6-4 at the French Open on Tuesday with a jaw-dropping display of attacking tennis in one of the most one-sided men's quarter-finals in Paris in recent memory. Four-time champion Iga Swiatek, who is looking to become the first woman in the professional era to win four consecutive titles in Paris, also punched her semi-final ticket with a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina of Ukraine to set up a mouth-watering semi-final with world number one Aryna Sabalenka. But it was four-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz's merciless dismantling of Paul that grabbed the fans' attention, with the 22-year-old Spaniard terrorising the former French Open junior champion who looked like a fish out of water. Alcaraz charged through the first two sets in just 53 minutes and in near flawless fashion, hitting winners at will and chasing down every ball before the shell-shocked American had any time to react. Paul pulled himself together to hold serve and go 4-3 up in the third but as the sun gradually went down over Paris so did the curtain on his inspired run, with Alcaraz winning three games in a row to put him out of his misery in just 94 minutes. "I could close my eyes and everything went in," Alcaraz said. "My feeling was unbelievable. I tried to hit the shots 100% and not think about it." "Today it was one of those matches where everything went in," he said. He will next take on in-form Italian Lorenzo Musetti who battled past American Frances Tiafoe in four sets after surviving a second-set wobble, to reach the French Open semi-finals for the first time. Musetti Warning Musetti, the world number seven, who escaped with a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct when he kicked a ball at a line judge, eventually overran 15th seed Tiafoe. "Honestly it was really unlucky coincidence," said Musetti of the incident. "I was a little bit scared, because I really didn't want to harm nobody, of course. So I immediately went to the line umpire, and I of course said, 'sorry', I apologise to everyone." "It was right to have a warning, but I think the umpire saw that there was no intention about that and that's why probably just, you know, let me continue my game." That occurred in the second set when Musetti, the only man to reach at least the semi-finals of every main claycourt event this season, was given balls to serve. He kicked one to inadvertently hit the line judge, who barely flinched even though she was hit on her upper body. Three-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka, hunting her first French Open crown, also needed just two sets to overcome Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen and snap her opponent's 10-match winning streak at Roland Garros with a 7-6(3) 6-3 victory. "I think we're all here for one reason," Sabalenka said. "Everyone wants that beautiful trophy. I'm glad I have another opportunity, another semi-final to do better than last time."
