Jill Sobule, I Kissed a Girl singer, dies in Minneapolis house fire aged 66

The Guardian02-05-2025

Jill Sobule, the singer-songwriter whose hits included the satirical anthem Supermodel from the Clueless movie soundtrack and the groundbreaking single I Kissed a Girl, has died in a house fire at the age of 66.
Sobule's body was found in a home in Woodbury, Minnesota, on Thursday. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
Her manager, John Porter, confirmed her death in a statement to the Minnesota Star Tribute.
'Jill Sobule was a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture. I was having so much fun working with her,' Porter said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter.
'I lost a client and a friend today. I hope her music, memory and legacy continue to live on and inspire others.'
According to her website, Sobule had been due to perform on Friday in her native Denver, to showcase songs from her autobiographical stage musical, F*ck 7th Grade, which was nominated in 2023 for a Drama Desk award.
Sobule was remembered for a diverse body of music that ranged from deeply intimate to socially conscious themes in a recording career that spanned a dozen albums starting in 1990 with her Todd Rungren-produced debut collection, Things Here Are Different.
Her eponymous 1995 album included two of her biggest hits, Supermodel from the Hollywood coming-of-age comedy Clueless, and I Kissed a Girl, widely regarded as the first openly LGBTQ-themed song to crack the Billboard top 20 singles chart. It peaked at No. 20 that year.
The song drew renewed attention in 2008 when Katy Perry released a different single of her own with the same title.

Shoppers run to Tesco for £19.50 ‘chuck on' summer dress that is ‘gorgeous on' and comes in three colours

IF you're searching for the perfect summer dress that you can just chuck on and feel instantly stylish, you'll want to leg it to Tesco. The supermarket's in-house fashion label, F&F, is renowned for its stylish buys at affordable prices. 4 4 4 4 And fashion fans have insisted the new strapless midi dress is a must-have for the warmer summer months. And the best part? You'll get change from a £20 note. The £19.50 frock boasts a ribbed, fitted bandeau top and flowy skirt with pockets. It can easily be dressed down with flip flops or Birkenstock sandals, or paired with heels for a fancier look. The supermarket find ranges from a size 6 to 22 and comes in three colours - khaki, black and stone. But it's not available on the website so you'll need to be quick if you want to get your hands on it. According to Tesco workers at one local store, the F&F buy is "gorgeous" addition to any wardrobe. In a short TikTok clip, they said: "Gorgeous new cream colour added to our strapless dress range. Mixed material and pockets on skirt." And fashion fans have been left in a frenzy over the dress, which is great for avoiding tan lines. "I bought this today it's gorgeous on. My store has every colour", one gushed. A second wrote: "Just bought this because I just know it'll be impossible to get by the time I go away." A third chimed in: "This is so flattering on! I just need a tan now!!" A fourth said: "Ummmm hello TESCO you superstar - thanks for providing this dress, [it] is just sensational!" "£19.50 for that dress?? Noooo!! Stunning", insisted a fifth. But a sixth cried: "I can't find these anywhere! not even online! I neeeeeed." Is supermarket fashion the new high street? DEPUTY Fashion Editor Abby McHale weighs in: The supermarkets have really upped their game when it comes to their fashion lines. These days, as you head in to do your weekly food shop you can also pick up a selection of purse-friendly, stylish pieces for all the family. Tesco has just announced a 0.7 per cent increase in the quarter thanks to a 'strong growth in clothing' and M&S has earnt the title of the number one destination for womenswear on the high street. Asda's clothing line George has made £1.5 million for the supermarket in 2023, 80 per cent of Sainsbury's clothes sold at full price rather than discounted and Nutmeg at Morrisons sales are also up 2 per cent in the past year. So what is it about supermarket fashion that is becoming so successful? Apart from the clothing actually being affordable, it's good quality too - with many being part of schemes such as the Better Cotton Initiative. A lot of the time they keep to classic pieces that they know will last the customer year after year. Plus because they buy so much stock they can turn around pieces quickly and buy for cheaper because of the volumes. More supermarket bargains Eagle-eyed shoppers have fallen in love with Tu's Yellow Striped Tie Detail Midaxi Tea Dress, which is priced at £28. Describing it online, the Sainsbury's team say: "Perfect for summer occasions, our yellow tea dress has been designed with puff sleeves, an elasticated waist with shirred detailing, finished with a tie fastening at the neckline for a touch of elegance. "Cut to a flattering, midaxi length. Wear with suede sandals and golden accessories." The dress is already sold out online so you'll need to be quick to get your hands on it in store. If you're self-conscious about a mum tum or your upper arms, delighted fashion fans say this is definitely one for you. One said: "Absolutely beautiful dress... even prettier in person. It's a lovely light fabric to wear in summer and feels very flattering on my plus size body. "The pockets are an added bonus! Very pleased with this purchase." A second wrote: "Bought this because I was drawn to the colour for the summer. "Love the length of the skirt and the fit at the waist - really flattering!"

Dannii Minogue back for more I Kissed a Girl after clarifying she is straight

Last year the Aussie host quipped that she "identified as queer" but afterwards had to explain she was still dating her long-term boyfriend Dannii Minogue caused a storm last year after quipping that she 'identifies as queer in a weird way' at the launch of I Kissed a Girl - and hinting that she was attracted to the 'hot' girls who took part. Afterwards she had to clarify on social media that she was 'not lesbian or queer' but remained straight, and was still in her long-term 'heater' relationship with musician Andrew Newman. Now the UK's first dating series for girls who like girls is returning for a second run on BBC3, with Dannii as host once again. ‌ She said: 'I Kissed a Girl was full of heart and groundbreaking for female representation on TV. The fans loved the fun, the passion and the drama. I can't wait for the return of the girls - let's see what the heat of the Italian sun does for kisses and connections. It is sure to get sparks flying. I am ready to be cupid once again.' ‌ Last year Dannii, 53, fought back tears of pride as she launched the new gay dating show. She got choked up as she told the contestants: 'You girls are so brave and amazing and have brought so much to it. I could never do what you have done. I will always be in awe of what has happened and what we've created. I feel so proud. You're stepping forward, and you're the first crew of girls representing in this space, and it is big.' The long-term LGBTQ ally was commended for getting to grips with the terms used to describe different types of gay women, such as 'femme' and 'masc', which led her to declare: 'I identify as queer in a weird way.' In the first epiaode one of the girls described Dannii as being 'just my type' and others also indicated they were attracted to her. Asked at the launch if the feelings were reciprocated, the Aussie star laughed: 'You girls are hot. You know it. I love it. I'm here for it. Is that an answer?' In the show, before the girls arrive at the villa, they are paired up based on what they're looking for in a partner. After meeting their match for the first time with a kiss, they're encouraged to give their new relationship a go, before potentially looking around at the rest of the group. ‌ BBC3 controller Fiona Campbell said: 'The girls brought their A game for the first series of I Kissed A Girl, creating a social buzz and stand out moments so to bring it back for another series means audiences can expect even more iconic, memorable moments and one hot summer.' Casting is now open for the 10-part series via the BBC 's 'take part' website. Last year the former X Factor judge said she hoped the series was watched by a broad audience, including those who are straight. 'There's a curiosity, right? Whether you are a lesbian or not. Who's going to be in the casting? Who's going to be paired with who? What are they like? Will they represent me? Do I see myself? A million questions and guess what? The straights have the same million questions. 'The best thing that can happen to this show is that everyone watches it, and everyone has questions. Everyone learns something. Everyone moves forward.' Dannii admitted that being the glamorous host of the show wasn't too challenging. 'I don't get to do a lot," she laughed. "I think I just drop bombs - and then swan off and try not to trip over my dress.'

Will there be a series four of Ginny and Georgia after huge plot twist finale

Series three of Ginny and Georgia left on a huge cliff-hanger- so will there be a series four? The third series of hit Netflix show Ginny and Georgia dropped onto the streaming platform on Thursday, June 5, and super fans have already finished binging all 10 episodes. But, after a cliff-hanger ending (spoilers ahead) viewers are on the edge of their seats, wondering if a fourth series has been confirmed. Series three of Sarah Lampert's comedy-drama, which focuses on teen Ginny and her 30-year-old mum Georgia, picked up after the jaw-dropping events of the series two finale, in which Georgia was arrested for the murder of Tom Fuller at her wedding to Wellsbury mayor Paul Randolph. Georgia's son Austin, who was playing hide-and-seek and hiding in the wardrobe of Tom's room, had witnessed the act as Georgia smothered Tom with a pillow. The third season primarily focuses on the murder trial, with Georgia facing a possible prison sentence. In a shocking turn of events, Austin frames his father, Gil, for the murder he knows was committed by his mum. But aside from this twisted crime and resulting trial, a huge plot twist that came at the end of the series was that both Ginny and Georgia discover that they are pregnant, after Georgia had faked a pregnancy earlier in series three. And what's more, we don't know the identity of the father of Georgia's baby. So, will fans be blessed with another series of this twist-after-twist comedy-drama? Luckily, the show was renewed for a fourth series at the same time its third series was confirmed, back in 2023. But viewers will have to wait until then to find out the aftermath of Ginny and Georgia's fast-paced series three finale. And its fourth series is planned to be its last ever. Showrunner Debra J. Fisher revealed to the Hollywood Reporter that the Netflix show was always planned to run for four series, and that they had already mapped out plans for Ginny and Georgia's final episode. The showrunner told the publication: "When Sarah [Lampert] and I pitched the show to Netflix, we did pitch four seasons, so we know what we want the end game to be. 'We know what we want the last episode to be.' Although the fourth series of the beloved show is yet to receive a confirmed release date, fans can expect to wait around two years, as has been the norm for the previous series. Ginny and Georgia series one came out in 2021, series two in 2023, and series three in 2025. And fans are devastated to have to wait, expressing their eagerness for series four on social media. One fan said on X: "Just finished season 3 of Ginny and Georgia. An amazing season, I need season 4 on my desk tomorrow!" Another user wrote: "Just got done with season 3 and Georgia is still mother, Joe is still hot af, Paul DILF card got revoked, not any cringe worthy moments from Ginny, and Ellen still being Georgia best friend throughout every thing with that said give me season 4".
