Assam Principal Folds National Flag With Legs, Arrested As Video Goes Viral
The clip showed the principal, identified as Fatema Khatun, lowering the flag and pulling out the flagpole from the courtyard of the school. She was then seen placing the national flag on her feet in an attempt to fold it with the help of her knees. The video quickly went viral on social media.
According to the police, the principal went to the school alone on Saturday morning and lowered the flag in an "objectionable manner".
"She had hoisted the flag in the presence of students on August 15 (Independence Day), but on Saturday she came alone at around 7:30 am, opened the school gate, and lowered the flag, after locals in the area had criticised her for keeping the national flag hoisted on Friday night," the police said.
The principal was arrested from Nagaon district under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
She has been sent to a 14-day judicial custody, officials said.

The blast, which occurred around 8.50 am when students and teachers from various schools were entering the parade ground, claimed 13 lives — most of them schoolchildren aged between 12 and 14. Dhemaji DC Rahul Suresh Javir, SSP Hitesh Chandra Roy, Dhemaji development authority chairman Tulan Konwar, Dhemaji College principal Dipak Kumar Neog, faculty members, students and community members gathered to honour the victims. In his address, DC Javir called for unity against violence, stating, "We must uphold the spirit of non-violence and work collectively to eradicate terrorism. The innocent lives lost that day remind us of the need for peace and harmony in society. " Principal Neog recounted the tragedy while paying homage to the victims, whom he termed "martyrs of peace." "That fateful morning shattered countless families. Today, we remember not just their deaths, but their dreams that were never fulfilled," he said. Asst professor of history, Dhemaji College, Dolly Boruah emphasised the importance of educating future generations about the consequences of extremism. "Terrorism only brings suffering. We must teach our youth the value of peace. The 2004 Dhemaji blast remains a painful scar in Assam's history, a grim reminder of the cost of insurgency," she said. The ceremony saw participation from people of various faiths, who joined in prayers for the departed souls. A collective oath was taken to reject violence and stand united against terrorism. Police identify suspect in Ludhiana's Model Town Independence-Day snatching.
Ludhiana: Police on Friday identified the man accused of attacking a 55-year-old woman and dragging her behind his scooter in a street snatching on Independence Day at an upscale location, saying he is a repeat offender who was released from jail on bail less than three months ago. The suspect, a resident of Tajpur Road whose name has not been disclosed, already faces two snatching cases and was granted bail on May 28. Investigators also revealed the red scooter used in the crime had been stolen from the Tajpur area a week earlier. The attack, captured on CCTV, took place Thursday afternoon in the city's Model Town area. The victim, Alka Malhotra, wife of a businessman, was returning from a market near Dugri Road when a masked man attempted to snatch her purse just 10 m from her home. Footage shows Malhotra being shoved to the ground, her face striking the road, before the assailant fled. He soon returned, grabbed the purse, and escaped. Malhotra's son later alleged the thief also stole a diamond bangle from her wrist. She remains in a private hospital with head injuries and two lost teeth.
