UMS To Lodge Police Report On Burning Of PM's Caricature, Denies Involvement
KOTA KINABALU, June 23 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will lodge a police report in connection with the recent incident of Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally participants who burned a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
UMS said that it was not involved either directly or indirectly with the rally or the incident, which went viral on social media recently, and the report would be made to facilitate further investigations.
"Besides being contrary to the norms of peaceful assemblies, UMS views the act as uncivilised, immature and does not reflect the intellect of the students of the institution of higher education,' it said in a statement today.

Pahang cops to set up anti-cable theft task force at ECRL sites
MRL had expressed concern following reports of cable theft at certain locations along the ECRL alignment, spanning Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Selangor. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Pahang police will establish a task force to prevent theft at the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project sites in Kuantan. Pahang police chief Yahaya Othman said police had received 10 reports related to theft at the project's construction locations since last month, with estimated losses reaching RM200,000. He said cases involving theft of cables and iron had been reported along the ECRL project route in Cherating, Gebeng and Gambang, but no arrests had been made so far. 'We are still tracking down the individuals involved, and strict action will be taken against them according to legal provisions,' Bernama quoted him as saying. Those involved in cable theft may be prosecuted under Section 431A of the Penal Code for mischief by damaging cables, punishable by two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction. Yahaya said police had suggested that the project management acquire the services of auxiliary police to curb such thefts. 'We are ready to cooperate with Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd in addressing this issue. 'The public is also urged to report to police if they have information about any party trying to sell cables or other construction materials,' he said. He also warned the public not to buy stolen goods as it was an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Penal Code with up to five years' imprisonment, a fine,or both, if convicted. Earlier today, transport minister Loke Siew Fook said police must take firm action against cable thefts at ECRL project sites as this could disrupt the smooth progress and implementation of the project. MRL also expressed concern following reports of cable theft at locations along the ECRL alignment, spanning Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Selangor.

Sabah rally-goers slammed over burning of caricature
Participants at the Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, painting a caricature of the prime minister before setting it on fire. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A Sabah PKR leader is puzzled over why rally-goers protesting the water woes plaguing Universiti Malaysia Sabah set fire to a caricature of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the gathering. Razeef Rakimin pointed out that Anwar had previously announced an allocation of RM3 million to resolve the water supply disruptions at the university. 'The prime minister approved the sum after listening to the students' grouses and yet he was targeted,' he said in a statement this evening. During a trip to Kota Kinabalu in May 2023, Anwar said the federal government would channel the sum to the state government to resolve UMS's water woes. In January last year, higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir announced an additional allocation of RM2 million to UMS for the same purpose. The Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally, organised by several UMS students over the weekend, ended with the burning of Anwar's caricature. According to Malaysiakini, the rally began at about 1pm on Saturday and continued until 11am yesterday with over 100 participants who called for action against the Sabah water department. Razeef, who is the Tuaran PKR chief, said that while the party had no issue with the public holding rallies, there was something amiss with the approach adopted by the organisers of the Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally. He said the campaign resorted to snide remarks and swearing, 'which many found off-putting'. When only 50 to 80 rally-goers turned up on the first day, he said, the organisers came up with a new gimmick – drawing Anwar's caricature and burning it. 'It is clear that it was not only a desperate stunt, but one that was also directed at the wrong person,' he said.
