T.N. govt. approves Chennai Metro Rail's Airport-Kilambakkam project, forwards proposal to Centre
After years of wait, the Tamil Nadu government has approved Chennai Metro Rail's Airport-Kilambakkam project and has forwarded the detailed project report (DPR) to the Centre.
To be built at an estimated cost of ₹9,335 crore, the Airport-Kilambakkam corridor has been one of the most anticipated projects for Chennaiites, as it would significantly improve the commute for those residing in the city's southern areas, such as Chromepet, Pallavaram, Tambaram, and Perungalathur.
The need for this corridor has become particularly essential after the opening of the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) in Kilambakkam in December 2023; thousands of people travel on this route to take buses from the terminus.
The Airport-Kilambakkam corridor will be constructed entirely as an elevated stretch along GST Road, covering a distance of 15.46 km. Stations are to come up in the following locations: Pallavaram, Chromepet, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Tambaram, Irumbuliyur, Perungalathur, Vandalur, Anna Zoological Park, and Kilambakkam.
Land acquisition
Sources said the government has recommended the DPR to the Centre 'for its approval and funding under equity sharing basis.' The land acquisition and shifting of utilities will begin soon. 'To begin the land acquisition process, we need yet another notification, which will take six months. Once that comes through, the acquisition process can commence, but it could go on for at least a year and a half. But shifting of utilities can start within a few months,' a source said. The project will need approval from the Centre by then so that construction can begin.
There were quite a lot of delays in this project due to design changes. Now, according to the final proposal, Chennai Metro Rail's Airport-Kilambakkam corridor is proposed at the second level and the elevated road at the first level.
Commuters say those residing in the southern areas find it difficult to reach the nearest Chennai Metro Rail station — the Chennai airport station — due to lack of adequate last-mile connectivity vehicles. For some, it could cost as much as ₹100-200, based on the distance, if they take an auto.
Dayanand Krishnan, a resident of Chitlapakkam said, people have waited for over four years for the approval of this project. In the meantime, the number of vehicles has gone up and congestion has increased manifold, especially after the opening of the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus.
'The design revisions and bureaucratic delays end up causing inconvenience to the public. I am glad that State's approval has come, but the Centre should also provide the final approval and funding without any further delays,' he said.
He said, over the years, people have moved to areas like Chromepet, Tambaram, and Perungalathur, as paying rent and purchasing properties is affordable there in comparison to the core areas of the city. 'But when compared to the growth, the investment in infrastructure in these areas seems far too inadequate,' he added.

Govt asks edible oil industry to pass on duty cut benefits to consumers
HighlightsThe Indian food ministry has mandated that edible oil industry associations immediately pass on the reduction in customs duties on crude oils to consumers, in response to rising food inflation. The Basic Customs Duty on crude edible oils, such as crude sunflower, soybean, and palm oils, has been halved from 20 percent to 10 percent to alleviate the impact of sharp price increases on consumers. Industry stakeholders are required to adjust their Price to Distributors and Maximum Retail Price in accordance with lower landed costs and provide weekly updates on reduced pricing to the Department of Food and Public Distribution. The food ministry has ordered edible oil industry associations to immediately pass on import duty reductions to consumers, following a government decision to halve customs duties on crude oils amid soaring food inflation . A meeting with leading edible oil industry associations and industry stakeholders was held under the chairmanship of Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution, where an advisory was issued directing them to pass on the benefits from the duty reduction to consumers. Industry stakeholders are expected to adjust their Price to Distributors (PTD) and Maximum Retail Price (MRP) in accordance with lower landed costs with immediate effect, the department said in a statement. Associations have been requested to advise their members to implement immediate price reductions and share updated brand-wise MRP sheets with the department on a weekly basis. The ministry shared a format with the edible oil industry for reporting reduced MRP and PTD data, emphasising that "timely transmission of benefits through the supply chain is imperative to ensure consumers experience corresponding decreases in retail prices". The decision came after a detailed review of the sharp rise in edible oil prices following last year's duty hike. The increase led to significant inflationary pressure on consumers, with retail edible oil prices soaring and contributing to rising food inflation. The Centre has reduced the Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on crude edible oils -- crude sunflower, soybean, and palm oils -- from 20 per cent to 10 per cent, resulting in the import duty differential between crude and refined edible oils increasing from 8.75 per cent to 19.25 per cent. This adjustment aims to address the escalating edible oil prices resulting from the September 2024 duty hike and concurrent increases in international market prices. The 19.25 per cent duty differential between crude and refined oils will help encourage domestic refining capacity utilisation and reduce imports of refined oils, officials said. Import duty on edible oils is one of the important factors that impacts landed cost of edible oils and thereby domestic prices. By lowering the import duty on crude oils, the government aims to reduce the landed cost and retail prices.

Census 2027: How India Plans To Release Population Data In Just 9 Months
Last Updated: The Centre has set March 1, 2027, as the reference date for the census - the first since the Covid-19 pandemic forced a delay in the originally scheduled 2020 enumeration India's decennial population count will enter a new era in 2027 with the country's first fully digital census, promising a major leap in efficiency, transparency, and speed. According to top government sources, the final population data, with granular details on gender distribution at the national, state, district, and taluka levels, could be available by December 2027, barely nine months after the fieldwork concludes. This marks a dramatic shift from the 2011 Census, which took nearly two years to compile and release its final datasets. Officials attribute the time savings to a complete digital overhaul, including mobile app-based data collection, multilingual support, and cutting-edge processing tools. The Centre has set March 1, 2027, as the reference date for the census – the first since the Covid-19 pandemic forced a delay in the originally scheduled 2020 enumeration. The operation will be conducted in two phases: 1. House Listing Phase: Beginning in 2026, this stage will involve identifying and listing households. 2. Population Enumeration Phase: Scheduled for February 2027, this will include the collection of individual data such as name, age, gender, education level, and other demographic indicators. Digital Census 2027: Key Innovations For the first time in history, the census will be entirely paperless. Enumerators will use specially developed mobile applications, available in 16 languages, including Hindi, English, and 14 regional tongues, to collect data directly from households. Citizens will also be given the option of self-enumeration via the app, an unprecedented feature that adds a layer of accessibility and autonomy to the process. The most striking promise of the 2027 Census is the nine-month turnaround from data collection to the release of final population figures. In previous censuses, a significant bottleneck was the physical handling of data – manual entries, paper schedule scanning, and logistics related to transporting and storing documents. The digital approach eliminates all of this. Data will be entered directly at the point of collection and instantly uploaded to central servers for analysis. According to officials, the combination of mobile-first tools, automated processing systems, and streamlined logistics could cut the traditional timeline by more than half. This will be the most high-tech and efficient census India has ever seen, a senior government source involved in the planning said, adding that the expected release of detailed population data is by December 2027.
