Bengaluru's traffic problem overstated because of bad PR: Nikhil Kamath

Bengaluru is getting a disproportionate rap for its traffic because of bad PR, said celebrity entrepreneur and co-founder of Zerodha, Nikhil Kamath, in the latest episode of his podcast 'WTF is' Kamath had a freewheeling chat with B Dayananda, Commissioner of Police (CP), and M N Anucheth, Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP), Traffic, in his podcast, which is available on Spotify.
The video of the interaction is also posted on Kamath's official YouTube page.
Noting that whenever he says anything good about Bengaluru, he is always confronted with traffic, traffic, traffic, Kamath asked the JCP if there is a solution to the traffic problem in Bengaluru.
"I also think that the problem is overstated because I don't know, bad PR? Maybe we have not done a good job of telling our story," said Kamath.
Anucheth agreed that the amount of criticism Bengaluru is getting is disproportionate to the problem at hand.
"I think every major metropolitan city across the world faces the issue of traffic because, let's face it, cities are magnets for employment. The thing with Bengaluru has been that post-2000, after the IT boom, there has been explosive growth, and the infrastructure has not commensurately grown with the growth of vehicles or the population," added Anucheth.
According to him, Bengaluru has the highest number of vehicles per 1,000 people in India.
"It's 872 per 1,000 population. So, we have a 1.5 crore population with 1.23 crore vehicles. We also doubled between 2013 and 2023 in terms of vehicle growth ratein 2013, it was 56 lakh, and in 2023, it was 1.12 crore. With that kind of growth rate, infrastructure will never be enough," said Anucheth.
He also pointed out that historically, Bengaluru lacked public transport facilities.
"The only public transport facilities before the Metro came were BMTC busesunlike other cities like Kolkata, which had trams, or Mumbai, which has the Mumbai local," said Anucheth.
He said things will improve a lot once the ongoing public infrastructure projects are completed.
"The long-term solution to Bengaluru's problems is public transport, whether it's KRIDE suburban trains or the Metro increasing its fleet. I think that's the way forward," said the JCP Traffic.
He also agreed that implementation is taking more time than planned.
"But when it falls into place, you will see a change. For example, when the Outer Ring Road line opens for the Metro, not only will the Metro be available, but also the carriage space, which is reduced because of the ongoing Metro work, will open up. I mean, Bengaluru will get the entire 10-lane road to drive on," said Anucheth.
He said until then, the city will have to make do with short-term measures like the implementation of AI-based signal technology, junction redesign, and some traffic engineering, which is being done on a day-to-day basis.

Decline in Metro passengers: BMRCL resorts to advertising to reverse trend

Bengaluru: As the ticket prices of Namma Metro increase, the number of passengers is decreasing day by day, which is causing a loss in revenue. Therefore, to compensate for this, BMRCL is planning to put advertisements inside and outside the Namma Metro train. After the increase in Metro tickets, the number of passengers traveling in the metro is decreasing day by day, which is causing a loss to the metro. To avoid this, BMRCL has resorted to advertisements, and colourful advertisements are appearing inside and outside the metro. The option before the metro to get out of the financial blow is currently advertising. BMRCL currently has 57 trains running. Now, a total of 57 trains have been allowed to install advertisements, of which 33 on the purple line and 24 on the green line are being installed. Plans are being made to put advertisements on all the trains, except for the original color. There was no advertisement inside and outside the trains till now. From now on, permission has been given to install advertisement inside and outside all the trains, said Chief Public Relations Officer Yashwant Chauhan. A contract worth Rs 25 crore has been given for installing advertisement in metro trains, and a tender of Rs 11 crore has been floated for the Green Line and Rs 14 crore for the Purple Line. The metro has completed a total tender of Rs 25 crore. Advertisements have been allowed for 7 years, and an agreement has been signed with Mudra Ventures and Lokesh Outdoor. There is a 5 per cent increase every year. Only advertisements with social concerns have been allowed. But metro passengers are expressing anger over this. Overall, Namma metro is not earning enough income. It is not being able to pay the interest on the loan taken, so they are saying that they have resorted to advertisement, while the passengers themselves are saying that the ticket prices should be decreased and the number of passengers will increase, and the income will come.

Will fix traffic woes, improve Bengaluru: Dy CM DK Shivakumar

BENGALURU: Traffic is the only big concern for Bengaluru, and we are addressing the issue to ensure the city becomes a popular destination. The government has allocated Rs 1 lakh crore to improve Bengaluru's traffic and infrastructure with the construction of flyovers, better roads, tunnel road and the Metro over the next three years, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said here on Thursday. He said tourism and cultural competitions will be started in schools and colleges, and programmes held during the holiday season in December-end to create awareness about Karnataka's culture and tourism. Primary education and tourism departments should work together to encourage the youth and integrate tourism and culture into education. Shivakumar said the government is open to suggestions from people, students, artistes and experts on improving Bengaluru, Karnataka and governance. 'We are an open-minded government. We welcome suggestions, criticism and solutions, and seek cooperation from citizens and experts to improve the state and Bengaluru,' Shivakumar said. He was speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of the renovated Venkatappa Art Gallery. The gallery was renovated by Brigade Foundation at a cost of Rs 10 crore. The premises has three permanent galleries and two open galleries, apart from an audio-visual room and an AI-enabled souvenir section. Tourism, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil said private agencies and individuals should come forward to partner with the government to improve tourism sites. He said: 'With the government undertaking restoration in Lakkundi, there are many heritage sites that can be restored by private firms. We are keen to offer 4-5 temples in Lakkundi alone to private firms for restoration partnerships.' On Shivakumar's suggestion, Patil said the tourism department will explore water bodies and guesthouses under the irrigation department to be utilised for tourism. With the Brigade Group requesting that one gallery be named after the company, Patil directed the tourism department to make a proposal and submit it to the government, to be discussed in the cabinet.
