Tottenham player ratings vs Newcastle: Kevin Danso stands out as Brennan Johnson sends reminder

Yahoo04-08-2025
Tottenham ended their pre-season tour of Asia with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle in Seoul.
On what will be Heung-min Son's final Tottenham appearance, his farewell dominated proceedings in what was a fairly uneventful game until James Maddison's injury.
Tottenham started brightly and took an early lead through Brennan Johnson's deflected effort from outside the area.
Despite their early energy, Tottenham were unable to capitalise and were pegged back when Harvey Barnes rifled a shot in off the post to bring Newcastle level.
The second half saw a flurry of changes for both sides, with neither team able to find a winner, with Maddison being taken off on a stretcher overshadowing the final minutes.
Tottenham remain unbeaten under Thomas Frank and end their pre-season preparations with a trip to Germany to face Bayern Munich.
Antonin Kinsky 6
Even though Barnes' equaliser beat Kinsky at his near post, there was nothing he could do about the goal. Otherwise rarely called into action.
Pedro Porro 6
Allowed Barnes to cut inside him far too easily for Newcastle's equaliser. Defensively, Porro is still vulnerable, but Frank will really appreciate his attacking qualities. The Spaniard is the perfect fit for his system.
Kevin Danso 7
Thomas Frank loves his defenders to be aggressive and proactive. He'll have thoroughly enjoyed the way Danso won possession to turn the ball over for Tottenham's opening goal.
He's by no means the finished article, but Danso will provide valuable cover for Romero and Van de Ven.
Cristian Romero 6
A solid performance from Romero, who dealt well with Newcastle's physicality. Similarly to Danso, Frank will like how aggressive Romero is when attacking balls into the box and winning back possession high up the pitch.
Ben Davies 6
Newcastle caused Davies problems down the left hand side but the Welshman recovered well and restricted the lively Anthony Gordon. Given Destiny Udogie's injury, Frank will be glad to be able to call upon Davies.
Rodrigo Bentancur 5
Wasn't one of his best performances as Newcastle were able to cut through Tottenham's midfield fairly easily in the first-half.
Archie Gray 6
Newcastle dominated the midfield battle after a bright start from Tottenham. Still, some more valuable minutes for Gray in his favoured position.
Pape Matar Sarr 6
He wasn't quite able to emulate his goalscoring heroics from Thursday's 1-0 win over Arsenal as Newcastle got control of the midfield.
Brennan Johnson 7
The Welshman opened the scoring with a deflected effort from outside the box but faded as the game wore on. Mobbed by Son following his goal, he will be expected to step up in the South Korean's absence.
Mathys Tel 5
Tel is 20 years old, and it shows - all the confidence without the conviction. Plenty of energy and potential, but Frank needs to channel it into something more productive.
Heung-Min Son 6
This afternoon was hardly ever going to be about Son's performance, and luckily so, as it was a pretty anonymous showing from the 33-year-old, who was routinely caught offside.
Micky Van de Ven 6
The Dutchman looked assured as Newcastle struggled to create any meaningful chances. Wasn't tasked with too much, but when called upon he stood up to examination.
Lucas Bergvall 6
There are a lot of questions to be answered in the middle of the park for Tottenham, but Bergvall can certainly be part of the solution. The young Swede tried to wrestle back control of the midfield, but struggled as the game hit a lull in the second-half.
Richarlison 5
Tottenham lacked an out-and-out forward in the absence of Dominic Solanke and Richarlison did little to suggest he is the answer. The Brazilian struggled to lead the line, but he wasn't helped by a lack of service.
Djed Spence 6
Newcastle had looked lively on both flanks early on but Spence got to grips with his position well and ensured Tottenham stayed resolute.
Yves Bissouma 5
Couldn't turn the tide for Tottenham in the midfield despite an energetic performance. His performance was symptomatic of a lack of quality in the second-half.
James Maddison 5
A really unfortunate way to end his pre-season as he was stretchered off injured in the 85th minute. The Englishman couldn't provide the spark to help Tottenham break out of pressure. A few nice touches, but he went missing in a physical affair.
Mohammed Kudus 5
Struggled to impact the game off the bench. Crowded out in a suffocating midfield battle, there wasn't a lot of space for Kudus to work with.
Wilson Odobert 5
A difficult cameo for the teenager, who like his team-mates couldn't find any rhythm in a stop-start game.
Luka Vuskovic 6
Helped Tottenham see out the result with an industrious display. The young Croatian stood up to task without standing out.
Yang min-hyeok n/a
Had a late chance as he jigged his way into the area, but having replaced Maddison with just five minuted left to play, there wasn't enough time for the youngster to find his feet in the game.

Premier League Striker Deals Interlinked in Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea Talks

Newcastle Transfer Puzzle Hinges on Isak and Jackson The summer transfer window has rarely looked so intertwined for three major Premier League clubs. Nicolas Jackson's preference to join Newcastle United from Chelsea could hinge entirely on whether Liverpool manage to prise Alexander Isak from St James' Park. According to The Telegraph, Newcastle's board have made it clear to Isak that he will not be sold this summer and will not be allowed to join Liverpool, a stance that has reportedly left the striker angered. 'Isak has been told by the Newcastle board that he is not for sale this summer and will not be allowed to join Liverpool which has angered him,' the report stated. Liverpool, undeterred by Newcastle's rejection of a £110m offer, are said to still be exploring the possibility of signing the Swede before the deadline. The Magpies' valuation of £150m, with three years left on Isak's contract, underlines the complexity of the situation. Jackson's Position and Newcastle's Striker Hunt For Eddie Howe, the need to bolster his forward options has grown urgent. Newcastle's failure to land Benjamin Sesko, coupled with losing out to Chelsea in the race for Joao Pedro, has left them looking at Jackson. The Senegal striker is keen on the move, and Chelsea have signalled they are prepared to sell. Photo: IMAGO 'It is believed that Jackson has told Chelsea he wants to go – they have agreed to sell – and was left out of the squad for Friday's friendly at Stamford Bridge against Bayer Leverkusen,' The Telegraph noted. Jackson has also been training separately from the first-team group, further indicating his impending departure. Although other suitors remain in the frame, Newcastle is the move Jackson favours. Chelsea, however, will only sanction the sale if the deal is right for them, seeking to at least double the £32m they paid to sign him from Villarreal in 2023. His nine-year contract, signed just last September, means they are under no immediate pressure to cash in. Chelsea's Ambitious Squad Overhaul Chelsea's transfer window has been relentless. Alongside the Jackson situation, they are considering significant changes to their attacking line-up, with as many as nine players competing for forward roles. One intriguing subplot is RB Leipzig's interest in re-signing Christopher Nkunku as part of negotiations to sell Xavi Simons to Chelsea. Nkunku, who joined Chelsea for £52m in June 2023, has endured a frustrating spell in London blighted by injury and lack of consistent form. 'The France international has made it clear he wants to leave before the transfer window closes, and Chelsea want to sell,' the report outlined. Leipzig value Simons at close to £60m, having only bought him from Paris St-Germain for £43m in January after a successful loan spell. While no official bid for Simons has been lodged, conversations have taken place, with Chelsea also keeping an eye on Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho. Balancing Risk and Reward For Newcastle, the dilemma is whether they can realistically sign Jackson while holding firm on Isak. For Chelsea, it is about balancing the books while improving their attack. For Liverpool, it is deciding whether Isak is worth pushing towards the £150m mark. Newcastle's stance has been consistent, yet the transfer market has a way of shifting priorities when offers climb or alternative targets emerge. Liverpool's persistence hints at a belief that an agreement is still possible before deadline day. Jackson's proven ability to hit double figures in his first two seasons at Chelsea makes him an attractive proposition for a club in need of goals. Although he lacks the global profile of some of the Premier League's leading No 9s, his pace, movement and finishing ability could add a new dimension to Newcastle's attack. The complexity of this situation ensures that the fates of Jackson, Isak, Nkunku, Simons and even Garnacho are interlinked. How these deals unfold could significantly shape the ambitions of three of the Premier League's most talked-about sides before the window closes. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From a Newcastle fan's perspective, this saga is both exciting and nerve-wracking. The idea of pairing Jackson with Isak could be enticing, but the fear is that the deal will only happen if Liverpool manage to lure Isak away. That is a nightmare scenario for many supporters who see the Swedish striker as a key figure in Eddie Howe's project. There is also a sense of curiosity about Jackson. He is not the type of headline-grabbing superstar that dominates social media chatter, but his output at Chelsea suggests there is room for further development. Eddie Howe has shown before that he can get more from a forward when given the right system and service. From a Chelsea perspective, fans may be sceptical about letting Jackson go so soon after signing him on such a long deal, especially if he thrives elsewhere. However, the lure of a substantial profit and the chance to refresh the squad may outweigh those concerns. Liverpool supporters will be split. Some will question spending such a vast sum on Isak, particularly in a summer when other positions could also use reinforcements. Others will see him as the ideal forward to lead Arne Slot's attack. What is certain is that this is a transfer chain with no straightforward resolution. The days leading to the deadline could bring surprises, and for all three clubs, those final decisions will shape not only the season ahead but also the perception of their transfer strategies.

Nicolas Jackson: Chelsea ready to sell striker with Newcastle and Tottenham interested

Chelsea are ready to explore the sale of Nicolas Jackson before the end of the transfer window. Jackson was left out of the Blues squad for their friendly with Bayer Leverkusen amid uncertainty over his future. The striker has been deemed surplus to requirements and is keen to assess exit options, with Tottenham and Newcastle registering an interest in the Senegal forward. Tottenham are known to be fans of Jackson, but they would only consider a move should Richarlison leave the club this Brazilian, who struggled with injuries and form last season, has rejected interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia. Newcastle are also interested in Jackson as they identify potential replacements for Alexander Isak, who is heavily linked with a move to Liverpool. Speaking this week, Blues head coach Enzo Maresca refused to rule out the possibility of Jackson leaving Stamford Bridge. 'When the transfer window is open, unfortunately or fortunately, anything can happen. This also involves Nico's situation,' Maresca said. 'At the moment we also had two strikers arrive, Joao [Pedro] and Liam [Delap]. So we will see what happens.' The Magpies have had a frustrating summer, missing out on a number of key targets, but are continuing to push for a deal for Yoane Wissa. They appear to have lost out to Man United in the race for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, and have now turned their attention to Jackson. The 23-year-old scored 10 Premier League goals last season but has fallen down the pecking order following the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. Chelsea are now prepared to part with Jackson as they look to sanction departures following another busy summer of spending. Maresca's side have spent over £200 million as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League next season. The Blues have managed to offset much of their spending by selling a number of first-team players, and it remains to be seen how much they will want for Jackson. Djordje Petrovic, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Noni Madueke, Joao Felix, Ishe Samuels-Smith, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Armando Broja have all been sold this summer. Jackson is suspended for the first game of the Premier League season, having been sent off for violent conduct against Newcastle.

Tottenham submit opening proposal for Manchester City's Savinho

Manchester City have seemingly rejected an opening proposal from Tottenham for Brazilian winger Savinho, according to the latest developments. While Tottenham's interest has been apparent for only a matter of days, negotiations have now moved into the bidding stage, with Spurs seemingly receiving encouragement that Savinho would be open to a move to North London. Manchester City, however, remain firm in their own internal valuation and are not prepared to sell unless their demands are met in full for a player they want to keep. The Athletic's David Ornstein and Guillermo Rai reported earlier on Monday that City are not actively pushing for Savinho's sale but are willing to listen to offers. While the player is open to exploring the possibility of a transfer, there has been no formal request from him to leave the Etihad Stadium. Discussions between the clubs have centred on a figure in the region of €50 million, though multiple outlets have indicated City want significantly more. The Manchester Evening News' Simon Bajkowski added that City's stance is that Savinho is worth in excess of £50 million, while The Independent's Richard Jolly stressed that the club still see the winger as an important asset. It is also believed that there is an internal view within Manchester City that Savinho's market value is likely to rise in the coming years, especially given his first performances in English football last season. According to the information of Fabrizio Romano, a first proposal has already been sent by Tottenham worth €50 million for Brazilian international Savinho, although Manchester City are said to 'want more' from a deal. It is detailed that negotiations remain ongoing, with Manchester City open to selling amid Savinho himself being 'keen' on the move to North London, but only on the conditions of Etihad Stadium officials. If Tottenham choose to return with an improved offer, it is expected to be closer to the figures Manchester City are privately quoting – exceeding €60 million before bonuses are possibly included. Such a bid could test Manchester City's resolve, particularly if it arrives well before the end of the summer window, leaving them with time to pursue reinforcements. From Savinho's perspective, the lure of regular Premier League minutes may play a significant role in his decision-making. While Manchester City can offer Champions League football and a consistent push for the biggest of honours under Pep Guardiola, the competition for wide attacking roles remains fierce, and a move could guarantee him a more consistent starting role. With negotiations ongoing, this transfer battle could hinge on Tottenham's willingness to break their own spending thresholds for the summer.
