BBC commissions documentary about TV chef Heston Blumenthal's bipolar diagnosis

The English restaurateur, 58, who presented Channel 4 shows Heston's Fantastical Food and Heston's Feasts, was sectioned following a manic episode and given a diagnosis of bipolar disorder in November 2023.
The hour-long film, Heston: My Life With Bipolar, follows the aftermath of the chef's diagnosis as he explores the mental health condition and rebuilds his life.

The film will also explore the state of bipolar care in the UK as Blumenthal meets people to hear about their experiences and the challenges they face.
Blumenthal said: 'It took me 50 years to get a diagnosis, so it's been an extraordinary journey to get where I am today.
'There is still a big stigma around bipolar, but it is vital to be able to talk openly about the condition. I know this isn't always easy, but I hope by sharing my experience in this documentary people will gain a greater understanding of bipolar and an insight into my life now.'
Since his diagnosis, the TV personality, who has has been awarded seven Michelin stars over the course of his career, has become an ambassador for Bipolar UK, which describes the condition as an episodic disorder characterised by sometimes extreme changes in mood and energy which has the highest risk of suicide of any mental health condition.
Mike Radford, executive producer, said: 'This is the first time Heston has given his account of what happened for a documentary. We're grateful to Heston for giving such a raw and unfiltered view of his life with this condition, which we know impacts the lives of so many people.'

Filmed over six months, the film will include testimonies from Blumenthal and some of those closest to him about how his undiagnosed bipolar disorder affected his life and the challenges he faces undergoing long-term treatment for the condition, including its impact on his creativity and energy levels.
The chef, best known for his experimental dishes including snail porridge and bacon and egg ice cream, has previously said that the medication he has been taking for bipolar initially dulled his culinary imagination.
The film captures Blumenthal as he continues on his journey back to health and running his renowned restaurant, The Fat Duck, which has been awarded three Michelin stars.
The film is set to air on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer on Thursday June 19.

Sunday Brunch faced chaos moments before going live after one artist was seemingly replaced at the last minute Sunday Brunch was thrown into chaos before going on-air after rocker Yungblud, who is no stranger to the programme, unexpectedly didn't turn up for his scheduled slot. In what seemed like a last-minute upset, the no-show occurred despite the artist being advertised on the TV guide as one of the day's guests for the live show that went out on Sunday, 8th June. ‌ The official Channel 4 summary promised viewers appearances by "Tim Peake, Ben McKenzie, Sian Gibson, and Professor Green. With music from Yungblud." ‌ Traditionally, musicians set to perform towards the end of the broadcast are seated at the table with other guests before their performance during the rolling credits, yet Yungblud's absence was stark. Not only did he miss his spot at the table of celebrities, but it also appeared that his space was swiftly taken over by Jerub, an indie-pop sensation who managed to fill in at what was probably the eleventh-hour, reports the Manchester Evening News. Oddly enough, the show's details failed to mention Jerub, and neither Tim Lovejoy nor Simon Rimmer, the hosts, offered any explanation regarding the sudden change or discussed why Yungblud wasn't there. While chatting on the couch with Lovejoy and Rimmer, Jerub acknowledged that it had been a "tight squeeze" to rearrange his schedule to appear in the studio, revealing how excited he was to "make it work" following the producers' call. ‌ Jerub disclosed that he initially intended to come from Leeds, but owing to some "trains being cancelled", he was compelled to travel frantically "by car" to ensure he made it to Channel 4 on time. Tim expressed his gratitude for the guest's presence, remarking: "It's a wonder that you made it here, really, isn't it?" but refrained from elaborating on the circumstances further. ‌ As the show wrapped up, Jerub stepped into the spotlight to perform his latest track, Deeper, captivating viewers with his vocal talent. The singing superstar has said that she has written letters of thanks to the creators of the Netflix hit series Adolescence for the impact it has had on her and her son. The 37-year-old told director Philip Barantini that she watched the series alongside 13-year-old son Angelo. She said the programme changed "her relationship" with Angelo who she shares with ex-husband Simon Konecki. ‌ Adolescence landed on Netflix earlier this year and was an instant hit. It stars Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham and tells the story of a 13-year-old schoolboy accused of murdering a classmate after being radicalised by misogynistic social media content. ‌ The Sun reported that Philip said: "I am getting messages, inundated on Instagram, from people from all over the world who can relate to this story or have really been affected by it. That, for me, has blown my mind a little bit. "I had a text message from Steven Spielberg who has watched it twice, and I got letters from Adele last week - handwritten letters from Adele. I mean, just like saying that she had watched it with her son, and it has changed their relationship. "Things like that are just beyond anything I ever imagined from this little show that we made with our family. You see things like Baby ­Reindeer and all of those shows — they come out and then they just blow up. It's a huge thing and that is the power of Netflix. "For some reason, because we made it in Yorkshire and it is set in a small town in England, I never thought in a million years it would be the number one show in India or Venezuela." ‌ The series has became Netflix's second most-watched English-language TV show ever only behind Wednesday, which is the Addams family spin-off. Since its March 13 debut, Adolescence has amassed 141.2 million views so far. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has also praised the show and how popular it has been across the world. He has even gone on to say that he thinks that schools should show the series to students for educational purposes. Sir Keir said he watched the series with his 14-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son. He said: "As a dad, I have not found it easy viewing." Main actor Owen Cooper has risen to fame since the show. He has been getting a lot of media attention after becoming an overnight star and even appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last week.
