Drugs bust sees six arrested during joint operation with organised crime
Five men and a woman were due to appear in court on Friday.
Six people have been arrested and charged as part of a long-running investigation into the supply of controlled drugs in Scotland.
The joint investigation between the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Police Scotland saw the recent search of several industrial units in the Glasgow, Stewarton, Paisley and Hamilton areas.
As a result, five men and a woman were arrested at addresses around Glasgow and Coatbridge on Wednesday, May 28 and Thursday, May 29, by officers from the Organised Crime Partnership Scotland.
The individuals were all questioned before being charged. They were due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday, May 30.
NCA Regional Head of Investigations Philip Marshall said: 'These arrests are the culmination of a long-running operation into a group suspected of being involved in the supply of controlled drugs. 'The NCA will continue to work closely with our partners in Police Scotland to protect the public from the risks associated with illegal drugs and target those who are believed to manufacture or supply them. 'Our investigation continues following today's arrests.'

Madeleine McCann search called off after just three days as police pack up
German and Portuguese police began searching properties on Tuesday. The new search for Madeleine McCann has been called off - just three days after it started. This week a new search was launched for clues over her disappearance. She vanished in Portugal when she was a toddler. On Tuesday, German and Portuguese police descended on several properties in an area of southern Portugal close to Praia da Luz. She had been in the area on holiday when she went missing in 2007. But the officers in question have now been seen packing up their equipment, which included a digger and ground-penetrating radars They are believed to have not found any traces of the missing girl. Investigators were punctured at several homes linked to prime suspect and convicted paedophile Christian Brueckner. The Mirror reports he used to live in the area during the time the toddler vanished while on holiday. A group of German and Portuguese officers stood around for a debrief at the search officially ended. The meeting ended in a round of applause and the teams shaking hands. Despite this, nothing related to the missing girl appeared to be found during the operation. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Police however have not shared an official statement on what could have been found. Police initially had a warrant until Friday, June 6, to investigate areas of interest in southern Portugal. Earlier today, investigators indicated that they were expected to end their search on Thursday if nothing was found. The operation kicked off on Tuesday, June 3, with teams scouring through more than 20 plots of land east of Praia da Luz. This included spots between the Ocean Club holiday resort where Madeleine vanished and the cottage where German authorities' prime suspect Christian Breuckner lived. Search teams discovered animal bones and pieces of adult clothing at these sites, according to Portuguese TV reports. The huge operation saw more than 60 officers involved in the latest search. Police were pictured using a JCB digger and cutting-edge ground-penetrating radar scanners. One of the places searched was a cottage once lived in by prime suspect Brueckner. The fresh search was reportedly prompted by new information about their suspect. Convicted paedophile Brueckner is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany. He was caged over the 2005 rape of an elderly woman at her Praia da Luz home but he has denied any involvement in the disappearance of Madeleine.

Ex-Arsenal prodigy jailed for four years over £600,000 cannabis smuggling plot
Footballer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was told he had 'thrown it all away' as he was jailed for four years for trying to smuggle £600,000 of cannabis from Thailand. The 34-year-old striker was arrested after officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) seized the haul as it was being taken through Stansted Airport. He had recruited his girlfriend and her pal to bring the drugs, which they thought was gold. Both women were cleared of importing the drugs at a previous hearing. Former Arsenal academy product Emmanuel-Thomas pleaded guilty to importing cannabis between July 1 and September 2 last year. The footballer, whose former clubs include Ipswich, Bristol City, QPR, Livingston, Aberdeen and Thai side PTT Rayong, was sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Judge Alexander Mills told him: 'It is through your own actions you will no longer be known as a professional footballer. 'You will be known as a criminal. A professional footballer who threw it all away.' Emmanuel-Thomas was sacked by Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton after his arrest last year. Prosecutor David Josse KC said the 'interception' of the two women – Emmanuel-Thomas's girlfriend Yasmin Piotrowska and her friend Rosie Rowland – happened at the airport. He said it 'became apparent this defendant, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, had been involved in their recruitment to travel to Thailand' while playing for a side there. The barrister said Emmanuel-Thomas had 'some awareness and understanding of the scale of the operation' and was acting in an 'operational management function' in the plot. Alex Rose, for Emmanuel-Thomas, said: 'The financial gain in this case for Mr Emmanuel-Thomas was £5,000.' Mr Rose said the defendant was a father-of-two and had made a 'catastrophic error of judgment'. He said a 'period of being out of contract led to very significant financial hard times' and he 'succumbed to temptation'. 'Although he had previously experienced periods of being in between contracts or – putting it another way – being unemployed as a footballer, they had largely been on the back of fairly lucrative long-term contracts,' said Mr Rose. He said the 'situation was rather different in the background to this'. Mr Rose continued: 'His football career is finished and that's something he has brought entirely on himself. 'It's a devastating blow for somebody who had such promise and such an impressive football career.' More Trending Judge Mills said Emmanuel-Thomas had played five games for Greenock Morton and was on a £600 per week contract at the time of the incident. He said the footballer 'recruited' his girlfriend and her friend and was 'essentially turning the importation of cannabis into an all-expenses paid holiday in the Far East', arranging business class flights, hotel costs and discussing in messages how to maximise their time on the Thai island of Ko Samui. Ms Piotrowska, 33, and Ms Rowland, 29, denied the charge and at an earlier hearing prosecutors offered no evidence in their case. Mr Josse said at an earlier hearing that the women 'said they thought they were importing gold not cannabis', and the judge directed that not guilty verdicts be recorded for them.
