Chalhoub Group expands Saudi operations with new fulfillment hub and store

Arab News05-02-2025

RIYADH: Chalhoub Group is strengthening its presence in Saudi Arabia by launching a regional fulfillment hub in Riyadh and inaugurating a new luxury store in Solitaire Mall.
The company's latest investments underscore its commitment to the Kingdom's evolving retail landscape, in line with its long-term expansion strategy.
The new fulfillment center, located in the Riyadh free zone near King Khalid International Airport, is designed to boost the company's e-commerce and distribution operations, serving Saudi Arabia and the broader region.
In an interview with Arab News during the Retail Leaders Circle Global Forum 2025 in Riyadh, Patrick Chalhoub, executive chairman at Chalhoub Group, highlighted the facility's strategic role.
'It's a fulfillment center, which is aiming to really service both our digital and e-commerce drive, our distribution in Saudi Arabia but also beyond Saudi Arabia from Riyadh, gradually, to be really a hub of distribution,' he said.
The hub is expected to process up to 100 million luxury products at full capacity, leveraging advanced technology to optimize logistics and improve delivery speed.
'The aim, like in e-commerce, is to be able to fulfill in Riyadh within two hours, in Saudi Arabia within 24 hours, outside Saudi Arabia in less than three days,' Chalhoub stated.
'This will be and is the heart of the market, so it's better to be based in the heart of the market and not be based outside and servicing the market,' he remarked, referring to the Kingdom as the center of luxury retail.
Chalhoub Group has been present in the Saudi market since 1959 and has witnessed significant policy and economic shifts over the decades, the executive chairman highlighted.
The company now employs approximately 5,000 people in the Kingdom, with 78 percent of its workforce being Saudi nationals and 74 percent women.
As part of its retail expansion, Chalhoub Group is also set to open a new store in Solitaire Mall in Riyadh on Feb. 12.
The store is designed to deliver an enhanced shopping experience, reflecting the company's focus on innovation in retail.
Chalhoub highlighted that consumer behavior in the Middle East differs significantly from other regions, driven by cultural and social dynamics.
Unlike Western markets, where individual preferences often dictate shopping trends, the Middle East places a strong emphasis on family-oriented experiences.
Human connection is central in shaping commerce, with relationships and social interactions deeply influencing purchasing decisions.
He underlined that while some of these characteristics can also be found in regions like Latin America and parts of Asia, they are far less prevalent in Western markets.
Additionally, the retail landscape within Saudi Arabia itself is highly diverse, varying by region. Consumer preferences in the western, central, and eastern parts of the Kingdom are distinct, reflecting localized tastes and traditions.
Chalhoub pointed out that Saudi Arabia's rapidly growing young population is another key driver of change.
With high birth rates and large families, the country's demographics present significant opportunities for brands. Increasing education levels and digital connectivity are also shaping a new generation of more knowledgeable, globally aware, and tech-savvy consumers.
He emphasized that this evolving demographic is one of the most valuable assets for the Kingdom and the broader Gulf region.
Chalhoub provided insights into the global luxury market, emphasizing the Middle East's growing but relatively small share.
The worldwide luxury market — including beauty, fashion, jewelry, watches, and gift items — is valued at approximately $380 billion, with the Middle East accounting for $12.5 billion, or around 3 percent to 4 percent of the total.
However, for successful brands, the region can represent between 5 percent and 7 percent of their global sales, highlighting its potential for further growth.
Saudi Arabia's luxury market is currently valued at nearly $3.5 billion, making up less than 1 percent of the global luxury sector.
In comparison, the UAE, driven by tourism and local demand, boasts a luxury market exceeding $7 billion to $8 billion.
Chalhoub also noted that despite their smaller populations, countries like Qatar and Kuwait have well-established luxury fashion markets, in some cases surpassing the Kingdom's in terms of spending per capita.
Given Saudi Arabia's population of over 33 million, compared to Qatar's 2 million and Kuwait's 5 million, he suggested there is room for significant market expansion in the Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia Opens Direct Communication Channel with Businesses to Overcome Investment Hurdles

Asharq Al-Awsat learned that Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Investment is launching a new service to strengthen its relationship with national businesses by providing them with direct access to a suite of investment-related services. The initiative will assign each company a dedicated relationship manager, who will serve as the main point of contact to streamline access to government programs and services. These include the Strategic Investor initiative, the enhanced services program 'Meyza,' the Alignment Platform, and various services offered by government entities at the Business Center. The move is part of the Kingdom's broader effort to create a more dynamic and investor-friendly environment as outlined in the National Investment Strategy, launched in 2021 by Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The strategy targets more than SAR 12 trillion ($3.2 trillion) in investments into the local economy by 2030. This includes SAR 5 trillion through the Shareek program, SAR 3 trillion in local investments by the Public Investment Fund, and SAR 4 trillion in contributions from domestic and international companies operating under the strategy's framework. The ministry has notified private sector companies that the new service will also serve as a platform to receive feedback, suggestions, and observations regarding regulations, business procedures, and related challenges. Additionally, businesses will receive invitations to take part in relevant events organized by the Ministry. The initiative reflects the Ministry's responsibility to manage Saudi Arabia's investment environment, provide facilitation and support for investors, and elevate the competitiveness of the Kingdom's economy. Efforts focus on expanding operational scope, boosting competitiveness, and removing barriers that hinder business performance. In the first quarter of 2025, the ministry reported significant progress, including the issuance of 44 regional headquarters licenses, resolution of 38 investor-related challenges, and the processing of over 1,000 investor visa services. More than 55,000 digital services were also delivered through the Ministry's website. In parallel with these operational upgrades, the ministry is actively pursuing legislative and regulatory reforms to foster a secure and competitive investment climate. One major development has been the establishment of the Saudi Investment Promotion Authority, which coordinates public and private efforts to position the Kingdom as a leading global investment destination. Recent legal reforms include the implementation of new executive regulations for the commercial registry system. Under these changes, businesses now operate under a single commercial license for all their activities across the Kingdom, eliminating the need for sub-licenses and reducing financial burdens. Additionally, new regulations for commercial names aim to streamline the name reservation and registration process, enhance their value, and ensure proper legal protection. The Ministry of Commerce has also introduced a mechanism to allow existing businesses to regularize their trade names in line with the updated regulations.

Grand Hajj Symposium kicks off in Jeddah

Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The 49th Grand Hajj Symposium kicked off in Jeddah on Sunday under the theme 'Capability in Hajj and Contemporary Developments.' Organized by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in partnership with the Council of Senior Scholars and the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives, the symposium brought together a distinguished group of scholars and researchers from across the Islamic world. Minister of Hajj and Umrah Tawfiq Al-Rabiah inaugurated the event, describing the symposium as an Islamic intellectual platform that unites prominent thinkers and scholars to highlight the significance of this great pillar of Islam and to reinforce its religious and cultural dimensions. Dr. Al-Rabiah noted that this year has witnessed the launch of several programs and initiatives, including infrastructure projects sponsored by the Royal Commission for Makkah City and the Holy Sites. These include 170,000 square meters of shaded areas, the planting of 20,000 trees, and the construction of rubber walkways to improve pilgrims' comfort and safety. Addressing healthcare readiness, the minister cited the establishment of a new emergency hospital, 15 ambulance units, 71 rapid intervention points, and 64 two-story health complexes. He also announced the inauguration of the General Transport Center as an institutional model for managing transportation in Makkah and the holy sites. The plan integrates buses and the Haraman High-Speed Railway into a flexible and efficient system. Dr. Al-Rabiah added that the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque has finalized its preparations through an advanced operational package. This includes upgrades to audiovisual equipment, the development of childcare centers, and services designed to meet the diverse needs of pilgrims and ensure enhanced services. Special Advisor to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah) Prince Faisal bin Salman also addressed the gathering. He emphasized the Kingdom's longstanding commitment to the Two Holy Mosques and Hajj since the unification of Saudi Arabia by the late King Abdul Aziz. He noted that serving the pilgrims has always been a sacred honor, a national duty, and a historical responsibility passed down through generations of Saudi leadership, with citizens proud to contribute to this mission. Prince Faisal highlighted the major infrastructure developments and humanitarian services now accompanying pilgrims from their arrival to their departure. He also announced the launch of the Hajj and Two Holy Mosques History Forum, organized by the King Abdulaziz Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. The forum is designed to serve as a scientific and cultural platform that promotes the rich heritage of the Two Holy Mosques and encourages global scholarly exchange and research. Saudi Grand Mufti, Chairman of the Council of Senior Scholars, and President of the General Presidency for Scientific Research and Ifta Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Sheikh addressed the symposium through remarks delivered on his behalf by Secretary General of the Council of Senior Scholars Sheikh. Fahd Al-Majed. He noted that this blessed symposium, launched more than four decades ago, has explored vital topics concerning Hajj and broader Islamic affairs. Sheikh Abdul Aziz emphasized that this year's theme, focusing on the concept of 'Capability' in Islamic jurisprudence, addresses its practical and legal implications in light of contemporary developments. The discussions aimed to facilitate the performance of Hajj and uphold the objectives of Islamic law through scholarly dialogue and thoughtful interpretation.
