Sri Lanka moves to strip former presidents' privileges
PTI
Last Updated:
Colombo, Jul 31 (PTI) The Sri Lankan government on Thursday gazetted a new bill which seeks to withdraw all privileges accorded to former presidents and their widows since 1986.
Once it is passed, it will force stopping granting of special benefits such as an official residence, monthly allowance, monthly secretarial allowance, official transport and other facilities.
The current National People's Power (NPP) government of Anura Kumara Dissanayake in their election manifestos last year pledged to stop privileges to former presidents claiming it was a burden on the public.
The country currently has five former living presidents plus a widow.
Once the draft bill is placed on the parliamentary order paper, anyone interested could petition the Supreme Court challenging its constitutionality.
Last month, the Cabinet granted approval to draft legislation aimed at repealing the Presidents' Entitlements Act No. 4 of 1986 and the Parliamentary Pensions Law No. 1 of 1977, effectively ending special privileges extended to former presidents, their widows and former MPs. PTI CORR GSP GSP

Soon after the meeting, Modi posted on X, 'Met Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji. Conveyed my best wishes on his being the NDA's Vice Presidential nominee. His long years of public service and experience across domains will greatly enrich our nation. May he continue to serve the nation with the same dedication and resolve he has always demonstrated." Met Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji. Conveyed my best wishes on his being the NDA's Vice Presidential nominee. His long years of public service and experience across domains will greatly enrich our nation. May he continue to serve the nation with the same dedication and resolve he has… — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) August 18, 2025 Radhakrishnan is likely to file his nomination on August 20. He is expected to be felicitated at the meeting of the NDA parliamentary party on Tuesday. After the BJP announced the VP candidate, PM Modi expressed confidence that Radhakrishnan will be an inspiring vice-president, who is the ex officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha. PM Modi said on X, 'Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji has distinguished himself with his dedication, humility and intellect. During the various positions he has held, he has always focused on community service and empowering the marginalised. He has done extensive work at the grassroots in Tamil Nadu." The vice-presidential election has been necessitated following Jagdeep Dhankhar's sudden resignation on July 21, the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament. Though Dhankhar cited health reasons as the cause of his resignation, it is believed that his souring ties with the government played a role in his abrupt departure. If the Opposition also names its candidate, the election will be held on September 9. Who Is CP Radhakrishnan? A former president of Tamil Nadu BJP, Radhakrishnan has been associated with the party since its early years and represented it in the Lok Sabha between 1998 and 2004. Radhakrishnan belongs to the influential Gounder caste, an OBC community, in Tamil Nadu. The former Coimbatore MP was made the Jharkhand governor in 2023 and then shifted to Maharashtra in July 2024. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. World shares mixed ahead of Trumps meeting with Zelenskyy
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Bangkok, Aug 18 (AP) World shares were mixed ahead of US President Donald Trump's meeting later Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders. Markets showed scant reaction to Trump's inconclusive summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday. Investors are also watching for cues from an annual meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, of top central bankers later this week. In early European trading, Germany's DAX lost 0.2 per cent to 24,303.26, while the CAC 40 in Paris dropped 0.5 per cent to 7,881.74. Britain's FTSE 100 was little changed at 9,137.31. The futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged 0.1 per cent lower. During Asia's day, Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 0.8 per cent to 43.714.31. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong gave up early gains, losing 0.4 per cent to close at 25,176.85. The Shanghai Composite index jumped 1 per cent to 3,732.44. It's trading near it's highest level in a decade. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 picked up 0.2 per cent to 8,959.30. The Kospi in South Korea declined 1.5 per cent to 3,177.28 on heavy selling of semiconductor makers like Samsung Electronics, whose shares fell 2.2 per cent. SK Hynix lost 3.3 per cent as investors fretted over the possibility of more US tariffs on computer chips. Trump's meeting with Zelenskyy will include other European leaders who were not included in the president's talks in Anchorage, Alaska, with Putin. The European allies are seeking to present a united front in safeguarding Ukraine and the continent from any widening aggression from Moscow. An annual meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, of top central bankers later this week will be watched closely for hints about possible interest rate cuts from Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell. He is due to speak Friday at the economic policy conference. 'While the official theme is labour markets, investors will scrutinize any hint of September policy direction, especially after last week's mixed inflation data," Ipek Ozkardeskaya of Swissquote said in a commentary, adding that 'any progress on Ukraine peace talks could push global equities higher still." Expectations have been building that the Fed will cut interest rates at its next meeting in September, though mixed reports on the US economy have undercut those bets somewhat. One report Friday said shoppers boosted their spending at US retailers last month, while another said manufacturing in New York state unexpectedly grew. A third said industrial production across the country shrank last month, when economists were looking for modest growth. Yet another report suggested sentiment among US consumers is worsening because of worries about inflation, when economists expected to see a slight improvement. On Friday, the S&P 500 fell 0.3 per cent. The Dow industrials edged 0.1 per cent higher, while the Nasdaq composite sank 0.4 per cent. In other dealings early Monday, US benchmark crude oil rose 7 cents to USD 62.87 per barrel, while Brent crude, the international standard, climbed 3 cents to USD 65.88 per barrel. The US dollar rose to 147.37 Japanese yen from 147.18 yen. The euro slipped to USD 1.1682 from USD 1.1703.
