Israel's attack comes as tensions have escalated over Iran's rapidly advancing nuclear programme, which Israel sees as a threat to its existence.
Here is a timeline of some significant events in the hostilities between the two countries:
– Iran's nuclear programme is a primary target
2010 – The Stuxnet computer virus is discovered and widely believed to be a joint US-Israeli creation. The virus disrupted and destroyed Iranian centrifuges.
2018 – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel obtained tens of thousands of pages of data showing Iran covered up its nuclear programme before signing a deal with world powers in 2015.

An ex-Mossad chief confirms the information was obtained by more than a dozen non-Israeli agents from safes in Tehran in 2018.
2020 – Alleged Israeli attacks against Iran's nuclear programme are stepped up significantly after the disintegration of the 2015 nuclear deal meant to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
July 2020 – A mysterious explosion tears apart a centrifuge production plant at Iran's Natanz nuclear enrichment facility. Iran blames the attack on Israel.
November 2020 – A top Iranian military nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, is killed by a remote-controlled machine gun while traveling in a car outside Tehran.

A top Iranian security official accuses Israel of using 'electronic devices' to remotely kill the scientist, who founded Iran's military nuclear programme in the 2000s.
April 11, 2021 – An attack targets Iran's underground nuclear facility in Natanz. Iran blames Israel, which does not claim responsibility, but Israeli media widely reports the government orchestrated a cyberattack that caused a blackout at the facility.
April 16, 2021 – Iran begins enriching uranium up to 60%, its highest purity ever and a technical step from weapons-grade levels of 90%.

April 14, 2024 – Iran launches an unprecedented missile and drone attack on Israel, firing more than 300 missiles and attack drones in response to the Israeli airstrike in Damascus.
Working with a US-led international coalition, Israel intercepts much of the incoming fire.
April 19, 2024 – A suspected Israeli strike hits an air defence system near an airport in Isfahan, Iran.

Israel had pledged to kill Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders over the October 7 attack.
September 27, 2024 – An Israeli airstrike kills Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Formed by Iranian Revolutionary Guard members who went to Lebanon in 1982 to fight invading Israeli forces, Hezbollah was the first group that Iran backed and used as a way to export its brand of political Islam.
October 1, 2024 – Iran launches its second direct attack on Israel, though a US-led coalition and Israel shoot down most of the missiles.
October 16, 2024 – Israel kills Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in the Gaza Strip.
October 26, 2024 – Israel openly attacks Iran for the first time, striking air defence systems and sites associated with its missile programme.

Iran fires fresh missiles amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes
The simultaneous attacks represented the latest burst of violence since a surprise offensive by Israel two days earlier aimed at Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear programme. New explosions boomed across Tehran as Iranian missiles entered Israel's skies in attacks which Israeli emergency officials said caused deaths around the country, including four in an apartment building in the Galilee region. A strike in central Israel killed an 80-year-old woman, a 69-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy, officials said. Casualty figures were not immediately available in Iran, where Israel targeted its Defence Ministry headquarters in Tehran, as well as sites that it alleged were associated with the country's nuclear programme. Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard claimed Iranian missiles targeted fuel production facilities for Israeli fighter jets, something not acknowledged by Israel. Amid the continued conflict, planned negotiations between Iran and the United States over Tehran's nuclear program were cancelled, throwing into question when and how an end to the fighting could come. 'Tehran is burning,' Israeli defence minister Israel Katz said on social media. Both Israel's military and Iran's state television announced the latest round of Iranian missiles as explosions were heard near midnight, while the Israeli security cabinet met. Israel's ongoing strikes across Iran have left the country's surviving leadership with the difficult decision of whether to plunge deeper into conflict with Israel's more powerful forces or seek a diplomatic route. World leaders made urgent calls to deescalate and avoid all-out war. The attack on nuclear sites set a 'dangerous precedent,' China's foreign minister said. The region is already on edge as Israel makes a new push to eliminate the Iranian-backed militant group Hamas in Gaza after 20 months of fighting. Israel — widely believed to be the only nuclear-armed state in the Middle East — said its hundreds of strikes on Iran over the past two days have killed a number of top generals, nine senior scientists and experts involved in Iran's nuclear program. Iran's UN ambassador has said 78 people were killed and more than 320 wounded. The sixth round of US-Iran indirect talks on Sunday over Iran's nuclear programme will not take place, mediator Oman said. 'We remain committed to talks and hope the Iranians will come to the table soon,' said a senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss diplomacy. Iran launched its first waves of missiles at Israel late Friday and early on Saturday. The attacks killed at least three people and wounded 174, two of them seriously, Israel said. The military said seven soldiers were lightly wounded when a missile hit central Israel, without specifying where. US ground-based air defence systems in the region were helping to shoot down Iranian missiles, said a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the measures. Israel's main international airport said it will remain closed until further notice. First responders were looking for survivors and clearing the remnants of a missile that fell on a neighbourhood outside of Tel Aviv early on Sunday morning. Responders used a drone at points to look for survivors in some of the areas that were too hard to access. Some people were fleeing the area with their belongings in suitcases. President Donald Trump said the US had 'nothing to do with the attack on Iran' and warned Tehran against targeting US interests in retaliation. 'If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before. However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!' Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social late on Saturday.

Donald Trump hails US Army as historic parade takes over DC while violent clashes erupt at ‘No Kings' march in LA
DONALD Trump hailed the historic US military parade in Washington DC as elsewhere in the country there were violent clashes at protests. Trump posted "what a GREAT parade" on his Truth Social page after a day of stark contrasts across the US - as thousands also took part in "No Kings" marches against the president's adminstration. 21 21 21 21 21 21 21 21 Washington DC welcomed a full-throated celebration of the US Army & American history with fireworks and the incredible scenes of troops and tanks rumbling through the streets. Trump addressed the military and gathered crowds in DC - warning those who threaten the US amid the looming threat of new war in the Middle East between Israel and Iran. He said: "Time and again America's enemies have learned that if you threaten the American people, our soldiers are coming for you. "Your defeat will be certain. Your demise will be final, and your downfall will be total and complete. "Because our soldiers never give up. Never surrender and never, ever quit. They fight, fight, fight. And they win, win, win." While elsewhere large protests gathered in many cities - with organisers saying 60,000 turned out in LA and another 75,000 showed up in New York. Peaceful marches were marred once again by violent scenes. last weekend's of anti-ICE raid riots. LA police said they used batons to disperse the crowd after people began hurling "rocks, bricks, bottles and fireworks" at them. And meanwhile there was a shooting during a 10,000 strong protest in Salt Lake City, with police saying it was "possibly associated" with the march. 21 21 21 21 21 21 Northern Virginia also saw an SUV driven into a crowd of protesters hitting at least one person. And in Minnesota many rallies were cancelled after the fatal shooting of a state lawmaker and the wounding of another by an on-the-run gunman who had "No Kings" fliers in his car. Meanwhile, patriotic tunes filled the air in Washington DC as Trump turned 79, with his grand military spectacle commemorating the US Army's 250th anniversary. The grandiose military parade showcased soldiers, sailors, airmen and US Marines with them all marching in their uniforms in front of thousands of excited spectators. As many as 7,000 troops and seven band contingents participated in the show. They were accompanied by at least 150 military vehicles and some 50 aircraft. 21 21 21 21 21 21 Some 2,000 civilians also marched alongside the US military. The Army said as many as 200,000 people were in attendance at the festival and parade. For years, the president is said to have had his eyes on a full-blown military show, but has failed to put up a working plan - until now. Plans were to roll out battle tanks, massive military equipment, and aircraft and missiles, just as Trump first envisioned the parade during his first term. Among the military equipment flaunted was M1A1 Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, World War II Sherman tanks and four WWII-era P-51 aircraft. The whole celebration was enclosed with an 18-mile ring of steel to protect the parade. Trump said: "Thanks to their extraordinary service and devotion, 250 years later, America stands tall." "America stands proud, and America stands free. We're the hottest country in the world right now. "And our country will soon be greater and stronger than ever before." Rescue workers sifted through wreckage in Bat Yam, Israel, in the early hours of Sunday (15 June) following massive destruction caused by Iranian missiles in the city. The two countries continued to trade heavy missile strikes overnight as Donald Trump threatened to respond "at levels never seen before" if Tehran attacks US bases.
