Iran Proposes Joint AI Centre with Iraq on Gulf Island
Hussein Afshin, Assistant to the Iranian President for Scientific and Technical Affairs and the Knowledge Economy, has reportedly proposed establishing a joint Iran-Iraq artificial intelligence (AI) centre on one of Iran's islands.
Speaking during a meeting in Tehran with Ali Razzouqi, Deputy Head of the Office of the Iraqi Prime Minister, Afshin is quoted as called for moving beyond memoranda of understanding towards practical planning and implementation, suggesting that the historical ties between Iran and Iraq could support long-term scientific collaboration.
According to Iran's state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Razzouqi welcomed the proposal, referencing previous cooperation between Sharif University and the University of Baghdad. He underlined the importance of AI as a tool to address broader challenges, including water, energy, agriculture, and environmental issues.
Topics discussed for future collaboration included military technologies, cloud seeding, and responses to climate change and dust storms.

Iraq signs contract for fifth submarine cable, aims to rival Suez Canal as transit hub
Baghdad ( – Iraq's Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, announced today, Tuesday, the signing of a contract for the country's fifth submarine cable with the United Arab Emirates-based company, Breeze. The strategic agreement is a cornerstone of Iraq's vision to become a major overland communications corridor for international traffic between Asia and Europe, rivalling traditional sea routes. Speaking during the signing ceremony, Minister Al-Yasiri stated that the new cable is a success story for the Ministry of Communications. She highlighted that for the past 15 years, Iraq had only two inactive submarine cables. In just the last three years, the country has now established five cables and is working on a contract for a sixth, a rapid expansion aimed at modernizing Iraq's digital infrastructure. According to Al-Yasiri, the submarine cables, which land in the port of Faw, serve a dual purpose: first, to add massive internet capacity within Iraq to improve service quality and lower prices for citizens; and second, to enable international 'transit' communications to pass overland through Iraq to Europe via Turkey. The ministry's goal is to establish the Iraqi land corridor as a competitive alternative to the maritime routes through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. The minister revealed that Iraq has several transit networks either under implementation or in the contractual phase. These include the existing 'Civilizations Road' network with IQ Company, which has already contributed to state revenues, and a planned transit network along the new 'Development Road' project. Al-Yasiri also mentioned ongoing land transit network projects with Qatar's Ooredoo and the UAE's Breeze. Additionally, a consortium of companies including AXA, GCX, and Horizon has been given approval to create a single Iraqi-Turkish land transit network, further cementing Iraq's strategic position as a digital gateway.

Iraq's Central Bank advances Digital Payment Transformation

Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) Governor, Ali Mohsen Al-Alaq, has outlined the Bank's progress in developing a secure and integrated electronic payment system, in line with international standards and best practices. Speaking at the Comprehensive Transformation to Electronic Payment Conference in Baghdad, he said the systems have improved the efficiency and reliability of financial operations and supported strategic initiatives in partnership with the government, including salary localisation, electronic security, and development financing programmes. Al-Alaq described digital transformation as a strategic choice for building a modern state, diversifying the economy, and delivering transparent public services. He said Iraq has a historic opportunity to create an investment-friendly economy capable of tackling challenges and combating corruption. Key CBI initiatives include: The instant payment system, enabling 24/7 money transfers and easier user experience. The unified government payment gateway, reducing manipulation and increasing trust. The national card scheme, ensuring digital sovereignty, reducing reliance on foreign systems, and offering products tailored to the local market. The development of the national switch to support higher transaction volumes with speed, stability, and security. The Bank is also conducting an in-depth study on regulating transactions in crypto-assets, addressing risks and opportunities while meeting financial stability, anti-fraud, anti-money laundering, and counter-terrorism financing requirements. The Governor called on the media and educational institutions to launch awareness programmes on the benefits of electronic payments and the risks of informal transactions, emphasising the need for cooperation among government agencies, the banking sector, technology firms, and civil society to build public trust. BYD Auto enters Iraq through partnership with NAT
Baghdad ( Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has announced its entry into the Iraqi market through a strategic agreement with NAT, part of Iraq's March Holding Group. NAT will serve as the exclusive distributor of BYD vehicles in Iraq. The partnership includes plans to open four integrated sales and service centers across several Iraqi governorates in 2025. These centers will provide sales, maintenance, and technical support. BYD also plans to introduce its luxury models to the Iraqi market, including the YangWang U8 and Denza, targeting the premium segment of the market. According to a statement, NAT will establish a training academy for Iraqi technicians to support the maintenance of electric and hybrid vehicles, with support from Chinese experts. BYD, founded in 1994, operates in over 70 markets worldwide and is known for its electric vehicle technology, including Blade Battery and hybrid systems.
