Taking to his X handle, PM Modi, who is on a five-nation tour, paid tributes to the revered Hindu monk. He said that Swami Vivekananda's thoughts and vision for our society remain our guiding light.
'I bow to Swami Vivekananda Ji on his Punya Tithi. His thoughts and vision for our society remains our guiding light. He ignited a sense of pride and confidence in our history and cultural heritage. He also emphasised on walking the path of service and compassion,' wrote PM Modi on X.
Swami Vivekananda passed away on this day in 1902. He was a philosopher, monk, and nationalist, and advocated for fearless living and spiritual awakening. His teachings remain deeply relevant in India's socio-political landscape.
His words continue to inspire generations, reminding people of the power of togetherness and harmony.
Swami Vivekananda, on May 1, 1897, founded the Ramakrishna Mission. The motto was to spread the ideals of his Guru, Sri Ramakrishna.
His iconic speech at the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893 continues to inspire generations. He introduced India's age-old message of unity, peace and brotherhood to the world.
Swamiji's famous quote, "Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached", remains a powerful call to action meant to encourage individuals, particularly the youth, to be proactive, persistent, and dedicated in pursuing their goals. It emphasises the importance of self-awareness, motivation, and unwavering commitment to achieve success.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while paying his tributes to the Swami, said that he was the pioneer of the renaissance of Indian wisdom, philosophy, and cultural pride.
'On one hand, Swami Ji inspired the countrymen towards spiritual advancement, while on the other, he awakened moral strength and self-confidence in the youth. Swami Vivekananda, who re-established the prestige of Indian knowledge tradition on the global stage, called upon the youth to arise, awake, and not stop until the goal is achieved. The ideas of Swami Vivekananda, who considered education the cornerstone of social development, will always remain guiding lights in the direction of nation-building," wrote HM Shah on X in Hindi (loosely translated).
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid his respects to the great Swami. 'He is an inspiration not only for India but for the youth of the entire world. We are all fully committed to fulfilling his dream of building a prosperous and progressive India,' wrote Singh on X.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took the occasion to mention the efforts she has undertaken to preserve the Swamiji's house.
She wrote on X, 'The message of universal brotherhood and peace that Swamiji gave remains equally relevant today. The Hinduism that Swamiji believed in is the same one I believe in - and that religion says that the religion of humanity is the greatest. Inspired by Swami Vivekananda's ideals, I wish that the people of Bengal, the people of the country, irrespective of religion, caste, or class, will respect and love one another – this is my desire.'

US economist Jeffrey Sachs has criticised President Donald Trump for slapping hefty tariffs on India, denouncing the policy as both "stupid" and saying it "serves no purpose". Speaking to ANI, Sachs said Trump's move reflects hostility toward the BRICS alliance of India, China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa. "This makes no sense. It's not true. It's failing. Sachs described Trump as "delusional" and blasted Washington's long-standing habit of exercising global dominance. "The US has exercised its dominant power for so long, they think they can boss every other part of the world around," he said. According to Sachs, the 50% duties slapped on Indian imports, triggered by New Delhi's oil trade with Russia, are not only damaging to America's own economy but also breach global rules. "Everything about the tariffs is wrong. It's destructive for the US economy. It violates international law. It's a breakdown of our political system. Trump's policies are doomed to fail," he warned. The economist also advised India to take a cautious view of Washington, arguing that New Delhi's long-term interests will not be safeguarded by leaning on the US for defence or trade. "US politicians don't care at all about India. Please understand this. India is not going to reap long-term security by siding with the United States in the Quad against China. India is a great power that has an independent standing in the world," Sachs said. Instead, he pointed to China, Russia and Brazil as India's "real partners," cautioning against the belief that India could seamlessly substitute China in global supply chains. Even if India aids in diversifying US sourcing, Sachs said, it should not expect a "great trade relationship" with Washington. He has previously called Trump's tariffs "unconstitutional," arguing they expose deep flaws in America's economic and foreign strategy.

Security heightened around disputed mausoleum in UPs Fatehpur
Agency: Kanpur(UP), Aug 16 (PTI) Security has been heightened around a disputed mausoleum in Fatehpur as a Hindu organisation, the Math Mandir Sanrakshan Sangharsh Samiti, on Saturday announced plans to hold a 'kirtan' (devotional singing) at the site. This move comes amidst a tense standoff following a recent incident where a mob vandalised the structure, claiming it to be a Hindu temple. Police have tightened the security arrangements around the mausoleum, with prohibitory orders in effect. The order has reportedly restricted residents from leaving their homes without a valid reason. District Magistrate Ravindra Singh and Superintendent of Police Anoop Singh personally visited the site on Saturday to review the deployment. More than 300 police personnel, two platoons of the Provincial Armed Constabulary, and Special Task Force teams have been deployed within a one-kilometer radius. The area is also under constant drone surveillance, officials said. The current situation is the result of escalating tensions that began when the Math Mandir Sanrakshan Sangharsh Samiti sent a letter on August 7 seeking permission to 'clean and beautify" the mausoleum, alleging it was a temple. Provocative social media messages have also contributed to the unrest, prompting the police to register three FIRs and maintain extra vigilance. While officials have identified around 140 suspects from video footage, no arrests have been made so far. Media access to the site has been restricted since Monday. SCERT says Bose ‘fled to Germany out of fear', corrects error
Thiruvananthapuram: Following protests over alluding to the element of 'fear' behind Subash Chandra Bose 's travel to Germany during the independence struggle in a draft copy of a teacher's handbook, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) carried out an immediate correction. The draft of the teachers' handbook prepared by SCERT for the fourth standard was published on the council's website for teachers' reference. In the book dealing with the portion of the Indian independence struggle, it was stated that Bose served as Congress president and later resigned from the organization to form a new party, the Forward Bloc. However, in the later part of the description, it was stated, "Bose fled to Germany, fearing the British. " SCERT sources said the handbook was not a final version, and the correction was made as soon as the undesirable allusion to Bose's exit to Germany was noted in the PDF version. The attempts to portray Bose as a coward who fled to Germany, fearing the British, caused much flutter, especially when the CPM and Congress persistently attack the BJP govt in the Centre and Sangh Parivar for their alleged attempts to alter the narrative of the Indian independence struggle.
