Artificial intelligence isn't just changing how we work but how we live. As a surgeon, I have seen how AI tools can reduce diagnostic errors, streamline paperwork and free me to spend more time with patients. It doesn't replace me — it makes me better at my job. In many ways, it lets me be more human. From agriculture to education, logistics to climate response, AI is already solving real problems. But the disruption is real, too — job losses, confusion and rising public distrust. Without direction, AI could deepen inequality, concentrate power and erode trust in democratic institutions. With the right leadership, it could do the opposite. This moment demands more than regulation. It needs vision — strategic, inclusive and grounded in shared democratic values. And that's where Washington comes in. I grew up in India, trained in Britain and now live and teach in Canada. Across continents, I have seen how new technologies can lift societies — or leave people behind. When the internet and personal computers emerged, many feared mass unemployment. There was disruption, yes, but also new industries, jobs and hope. AI holds similar potential — if we prepare wisely. The job losses AI is causing aren't speculative — they're already here. But they don't have to become casualties of progress. We can act now by funding real retraining, preparing people for future work and ensuring that AI's benefits reach beyond boardrooms to classrooms, clinics and communities. A practical step forward could be launching an 'AI impact initiative' — a public-private partnership that deploys vetted tools into real-world settings. Used wisely, AI can ease workloads, reduce burnout and free up time for what matters most — improving both productivity and quality of life. Globally, Washington could convene a 'democratic tech compact,' bringing together like-minded nations to align on trusted AI standards, open-data protocols and safeguards — offering a responsible counterweight to authoritarian AI models. AI, done right, could revive the middle class, restoring dignity to work, expanding access to services and letting people focus on what matters. It could also help us respond to crises, from pandemics to wildfires, with more speed and less chaos. But it won't happen through fragmented legislation. Washington must lead — by uniting democratic allies, industry, civil society and those working with AI every day. This coalition could build something lasting: shared principles like transparency, fairness and accountability. Shared tools — open datasets, regional innovation hubs and incentives for responsible development. A blueprint for the kind of world we want AI to help build. Imagine if companies were recognized not just for breakthroughs, but for building systems that reduce burnout, stabilize supply chains and support everyday workers. That's not science fiction. That's a policy choice. Some early steps are promising. Congress is exploring bipartisan legislation on AI research and deepfakes. But what's missing is a coordinated roadmap — one that drives innovation, protects economic stability and brings democratic partners together to shape a future where technology strengthens, rather than destabilizes, our institutions. If the U.S. doesn't lead, others will. Authoritarian regimes are already using AI — not to serve people, but to surveil and control them. When Vladimir Putin said in 2017, 'Whoever leads in AI will rule the world,' he was telling the truth. I don't write this as an American. But like many around the world, I have seen how U.S. leadership can set the tone — not through dominance, but by offering direction rooted in freedom, fairness and trust. And AI desperately needs that guidance. In medicine, we don't let even the most gifted surgical trainees operate solo on day one — not because they lack potential, but because safety depends on oversight and structure. AI demands the same — not suppression, but stewardship. We've been here before, on the edge of revolutions we didn't fully understand. This time, we can be more prepared. We can build the foundation for a future where innovation and human dignity grow together. The decisions made today won't just shape AI. They will shape the kind of world we live in, and the one we leave behind. And because Washington holds unmatched influence — economic, military and technological — its leadership matters more than ever. Not to dominate the future, but to help humanity rise with it. Google announced a multiyear deal with NBA star Steph Curry on Wednesday at its Made by Google event. As part of the deal, Curry will use AI from Google's Cloud to get better at the game he's played for years. And while I respect Curry landing this gig, no one can convince me that AI knows ball. Let's start with the idea that 11-time All-Star, 4-time NBA Champ and 2-time Scoring Champ (to name a few of his accolades) Stephen Curry knows less about basketball than Google's AI. That's absurd. Did you see those awards? Curry is one of the most dominant players of this generation, hands down. Google thinks it can help Curry improve his shooting and workout plans through its AI Basketball Coach. The "coach" will analyze Curry's form and give him feedback. "He'll utilize our AI Basketball Coach experience, which incorporates Gemini models on Vertex AI and MediaPipe to provide detailed form analysis, visual feedback and personalized coaching tips," Google wrote in a blog post. Again, absurd. Curry and the Golden State Warriors didn't win the championship this past year, but he still led the league in average 3-point field goals made per game and free-throw shooting percentage, shooting 93.3% from the line. So if there's one thing Curry knows how to do, it's shoot the ball. What's the AI going to tell him? Keep doing exactly what you're doing? Stellar advice. According to Google, the coach films some of your jumpshots, analyzes things like ball trajectory and outcome, and then gives you feedback on how to improve. Maybe this could help your jumpshot, but it can't give you coaching tips on any other aspect of the game. The AI doesn't touch on defense, ball handling or anything else. Does the AI know what to do when someone like 7'3" Victor Wembanyama has their hand in your face? Maybe it tells you to shoot the ball into outer space and hope for the best. What about when you're going up against Domantas Sabonis for a rebound? Does the AI know how to stop the monster that is Nikola Jokic, who was one of the league leaders last season in points made per game, assists, rebounds and steals? No, but Jokic loves his horses, so maybe if you ask him about them, he'll be distracted. Google's AI can't help in these scenarios because it's just supposed to help you learn how to improve your jumpshot. That's a nice tool to have, but when you play against someone like Lebron James, you're going to need a whole lot more than that to win. Maybe Google's AI basketball coach can help teach someone how to shoot the ball, but that's about it. And even then, the best way to learn how to shoot is to get out there and play. We're Already Living in the Post-A.I. Future

In 2023 — just as ChatGPT was hitting 100 million monthly users, with a large minority of them freaking out about living inside the movie 'Her' — the artificial intelligence researcher Katja Grace published an intuitively disturbing industry survey that found that one-third to one-half of top A.I. researchers thought there was at least a 10 percent chance the technology could lead to human extinction or some equally bad outcome. A couple of years later, the vibes are pretty different. Yes, there are those still predicting rapid intelligence takeoff, along both quasi-utopian and quasi-dystopian paths. But as A.I. has begun to settle like sediment into the corners of our lives, A.I. hype has evolved, too, passing out of its prophetic phase into something more quotidian — a pattern familiar from our experience with nuclear proliferation, climate change and pandemic risk, among other charismatic megatraumas. If last year's breakout big-think A.I. text was 'Situational Awareness' by Leopold Aschenbrenner — a 23-year-old former OpenAI researcher who predicted that humanity was about to be dropped into an alien universe of swarming superintelligence — this year's might be a far more modest entry, 'A.I. as Normal Technology,' published in April by Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor, two Princeton-affiliated computer scientists and skeptical Substackers. Rather than seeing A.I. as 'a separate species, a highly autonomous, potentially superintelligent entity,' they wrote, we should understand it 'as a tool that we can and should remain in control of, and we argue that this goal does not require drastic policy interventions or technical breakthroughs.' Just a year ago, 'normal' would have qualified as deflationary contrarianism, but today it seems more like an emergent conventional wisdom. In January the Oxford philosopher and A.I. whisperer Toby Ord identified what he called the 'scaling paradox': that while large language models were making pretty impressive gains, the amount of resources required to make each successive improvement was growing so quickly that it was hard to believe that the returns were all that impressive. The A.I. cheerleaders Tyler Cowen and Dwarkesh Patel have begun emphasizing the challenges of integrating A.I. into human systems. (Cowen called this the 'human bottleneck' problem.) In a long interview with Patel in February, Microsoft's chief executive, Satya Nadella, threw cold water on the very idea of artificial general intelligence, saying that we were all getting ahead of ourselves with that kind of talk and that simple G.D.P. growth was a better measure of progress. (His basic message: Wake me up when that hits 10 percent globally.) Perhaps more remarkable, OpenAI's Sam Altman, for years the leading gnomic prophet of superintelligence, has taken to making a similar point, telling CNBC this month that he had come to believe that A.G.I. was not even 'a superuseful term' and that in the near future we were looking not at any kind of step change but at a continuous walk along the same upward-sloping path. Altman hyped OpenAI's much-anticipated GPT-5 ahead of time as a rising Death Star. Instead, it debuted to overwhelmingly underwhelming reviews. In the aftermath, with skeptics claiming vindication, Altman acknowledged that, yes, we're in a bubble — one that would produce huge losses for some but also large spillover benefits like those we know from previous bubbles (railroads, the internet). This week the longtime A.I. booster Eric Schmidt, too, shifted gears to argue that Silicon Valley needed to stop obsessing over A.G.I. and focus instead on practical applications of the A.I. tools in hand. Altman's onetime partner and now sworn enemy Elon Musk recently declared that for most people, the best use for his large language model, Grok, was to turn old photos into microvideos like those captured by the Live feature on your iPhone camera. And these days, Aschenbrenner doesn't seem to be working on safety and catastrophic risk; he's running a $1.5 billion A.I. hedge fund instead.
