Grand National tips: Experts' best bets and 11 horses to watch today at Aintree today
Officials have compensated for the dry conditions by watering the ground to ensure the going is good to soft but yesterday proved that this is still going to be a quick course to cover.
Jonbon headlines the day in the Melling Chase but all eyes are on the showpiece event this Saturday with the Grand National field now confirmed.
Last year's winner I Am Maximus is back and among the main contenders, while Iroko, Stumptown, Hewick, Intense Raffles and Vanillier are also heavily fancied by tipsters and experts.
I Am Maximus is attempting to create history as the first runner carrying top weight to win since three-time winner Red Rum in the 1970s, while only Tiger Roll has defended the title, in 2019, since then.

1.45pm
Handstands – 2 point win @ 2/1 (William Hill)
The Changing Man – 1/2 point each-way @ 12/1 (William Hill)
The decision to sidestep Cheltenham and head straight here can play dividends for Handstands who should relish the step back up to three miles.
The six-year-old's form was given a tidy boost when Jango Baie, gamely beaten by the selection at Sandown in February, went on to win the Arkle Chase at the Festival and he is reported in good shape ahead of this assignment.
The Changing Man doesn't win very often, but he has acquitted himself well in some tough handicaps this year and any price of 10/1 or above with preferred betting sites looks a fair each-way play with decent ground sure to suit.
2.20pm
Be Aware – 1pt ew @ 7/1 (bet365) – 6 places
Helnwein – 1/2pt ew @ 14/1 (bet365) – 6 places
Be Aware didn't seem to quite see out the trip of the Coral Cup on a stiff track and may prove more at home on the flatter surrounds of Aintree.
Dan Skelton's grey son of Martaline had previously finished placed in two of the season's hottest handicap and represents a team which have won two of the last three renewals of this race.
If you go back far enough, Helnwein beat Be Aware on the final day of last season at Sandown so could be overpriced on Grand National betting sites. Backers need to take on trust his ability to see out the trip, but it looks a risk worth taking at the price.
2.55pm
Romeo Coolio – 2pt win @ 5/4 (William Hill)
The Michael O'Sullivan Supreme Novices' Hurdle looked a race to follow, and it will be disappointing if third-home Romeo Coolio can't uphold the form here.
This speed track may not play to his strengths quite as much as Cheltenham, but hopefully he can be ridden close to the pace and kick at the opportune moment under Sam Ewing.
Tripoli Flyer is very much respected, but he appears to show plenty of disdain for his hurdles and can't afford to do that in Grade 1 company.
3.30pm
Jonbon to beat Protektorat – 1pt forecast
Events didn't go to plan at Cheltenham for Jonbon who was just one of a number of short-priced horses at the Festival to forfeit their chance with a modest round of jumping.
Hopefully, he can put things right here and reprise his victory in last year's renewal. Protektorat was two-and-a-half lengths in arrears 12 months ago and could be the one to follow the selection home again following a commendable effort in the Ryanair Chase.
4.05pm
James Du Berlais - 1pt ew @ 8/1 (William Hill) – 6 places
Ginnys Destiny - 1/2pt ew @ 16/1 (bet365) – 6 places
James Du Berlais jumped the final fence in this event last year pretty much on the bridle, so it was a surprise he didn't get the job done.
His entire season looks as though it has been geared around going one better and his supporters will be hoping for a similar round of jumping and perhaps a slightly more patient ride from J J Slevin who takes over from Paul Townend.
Backing Ginny's Destiny requires an act of faith but, in the hope that the first-time tongue tie and cheekpiece combination works the oracle, he might be worth a small each-way bet on horse racing betting sites off an enticing mark.
4.40pm
Califet En Vol - 1pt ew @ 4/1 (Betfred) – 4 places
Twenty of the last 24 winners of this race had won at least twice over hurdles, while 18 of the last 19 were aged six or seven.
Three of the last 10 were also trained by Nicky Henderson so Califet En Vol makes plenty of appeal, especially as 14 of this century's winners had also skipped Cheltenham like he did.
The selection's form behind Cheltenham festival scorer The New Lion looks the pick on offer here and he also fits the profile of six of the last eight winners who were ex-pointers.
5.15pm
Celtic Dino - 1pt ew @ 13/2 (Skybet) – 6 places
Slugger – 1/2pt ew @ 33/1 (bet365) – 5 places
The ground is quite an important component to Celtic Dino but there should be no concerns on that score here and he represents one of the stronger views of day two.
A sound surface saw the selection post excellent times at both Wincanton and Ascot before the turn of the year, while he still ran commendably in Grade 1 company at this venue on Boxing Day.
A recent effort behind Tripoli Flyer at Kempton was also a creditable effort under conditions which didn't play to his strengths, and he looks handicapped to make his mark here.
Slugger is one of three Harry Derham entries to hold live chances, and he narrowly gains the nod as an each-way dart courtesy of his fine effort in a strongly run Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso last time.

Wednesday racing tips: Best bets and odds for day one at York's Ebor Festival
Wednesday's York Racing Tips Ombudsman (York, 15.35) – 1pt win @ 2/1 William Hill Lambourn (York, 15.00) – 1pt win @ 5/6 William Hill Brazen Bolt (York, 13.50) – 0.5pt each-way @ 12/1 Bet365 Wise Eagle (York, 16.10) – 0.5pts each-way @ 4/1 William Hill Woolhampton (York, 16.45) – 0.5pts each-way @ 18/1 Bet365 The Independent's horse racing correspondent Jonathan Doidge has had a solid record in major festivals, 9.82pts in profit in his outing at Glorious Goodwood, and he now turns his eye to Ebor Festival. Jonathan has made his betting tips using the best odds from the best horse racing betting sites. Here are his picks for day one at York. There's no finer racecourse in the world than York. It's four day Ebor Festival never disappoints and is up there with Royal Ascot as one of the best events on the Flat racing calendar. 15.35 York Racing Tips This year is no different and the feature on the opening day is, as ever, the Juddmonte International Stakes (15.35). This Group 1 contest that has seen some of the sport's great names such as Sea The Stars (2009), Frankel (2012) and Baaeed (2022) get their noses in front. It's a race where the season's top three-year-olds take on older horses and was officially rated as the best race in the world in 2024. The trainer of the two most recent three-year-olds to win it is Aidan O'Brien and, having not declared entrants Lambourn or Whirl, he relies on one representative, in key player Delacroix. The only blot on the son of Dubawi's copybook this term was his defeat in the Derby, when sent off as the favourite but patently did not act around Epsom. He certainly did handle Sandown in the Eclipse, where his jockey Ryan Moore was reported to have changed plans four times in the contest, before finishing with a wet sail to nab Ombudsman on the line. He would be a record-extending eighth winner to hail from Ballydoyle. There is clearly very little to choose between the pair and the Gosdens must think they have a decent chance of reversing placings, given that their Night Of Thunder colt was not quite at his best in the Eclipse. However, the four-year-old's impressive two length success over Anmaat in Royal Ascot's Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes, where he repeatedly could not find a gap before winning going away, was one of the best performances we've seen this season. Both Sandown and Ascot are stiffer tracks than the Knavesmire, which is like a billiard table and we're siding with Ombudsman to exact revenge. You can certainly argue that the Eclipse was not run to suit him and, with a Godolphin pacemaker entered in Birr Castle, he should get a nice toe into the race, if that runner is allowed to dictate. Unless they go to too fast, Ryan Moore is likely to want to make it a stiffer test by taking things on some way out. There's a fascinating race in prospect and you certainly can't discount Group 1 Sheema Classic winner Danon Decile, who raids from Japan, nor See The Fire. Wednesday Ebor Festival tip 1: Ombudsman (York, 15.35) – 1pt win @ 2/1 William Hill 15.00 York Racing Tips By the time of the day's feature, the Blue Riband winner Lambourn will have done his stuff, because he's been switched to the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes (15.00), where he drops to Group 2 company and faces six opponents, three of who are his stablemates. Aidan O'Brien looks to have found another good opportunity for the Chester Vase and Irish Derby winner, over his optimum trip. He'll be a short price but he has at least 5lb in hand on the rest of the field and more than that with all but one of them. It would be a surprise if he is beaten. Wednesday Ebor Festival tip 2: Lambourn (York, 15.00) – 1pt win @ 5/6 William Hill 13:50 York Racing Tips There was plenty to like about how Brazen Bolt did his job when seeing off a big field at Glorious Goodwood, in what were pretty grim conditions. His pilot, the very useful 5lb claimer Warren Fentiman, said he was worried about the slower ground there but he's back on what should be more solid ground in the Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Handicap (13.50) and, having won here over 5f on his penultimate start, we know he acts at the track. He's come back to much better form this season for his trainer, Ruth Carr and the extra half furlong might actually help to eke out a bit more. He could still be ahead of the handicapper and his double-digit odds on betting sites make him worth an each-way play. Wednesday Ebor Festival tip 3: Brazen Bolt (York, 13.50) – 0.5pt each-way @ 12/1 Bet365 16:10 York Racing Tips Trainer Adam Nicol has done a super job with his dual purpose performer Wise Eagle in recent seasons. Stamina is very much for forte of the eight-year-old, who gets 2m2f on soft ground in this code. The extended two miles of the Sky Bet Stayers Handicap (16.10) should be spot on for him and this consistent performer warmed up for it with one of his better turf performances last time out at Musselburgh, when he was fourth behind Kihavah in a race that looks very solid. He has won on good to firm ground, he's also won when fresh and in cheekpieces, so he has a few things going for him. This time he also sports a first-time tongue-tie and it could be a good time for us to get involved. He looks another sporting each-way play. Wednesday Ebor Festival tip 4: Wise Eagle (York, 16.10) – 0.5pts each-way @ 12/1 William Hill 16:45 York Racing Tips There's one other of interest on the card on day one and that comes in the IRE-Incentive, It Pays To Buy Irish Fillies' Handicap (16.45). A big field has assembled for the race and some would say it's madness tipping when, at the time of writing, they go 8/1 the field. However, the Rod Millman-trained Woolhampton looks an interesting runner at a big price. The Camacho mare has yet to win this season and and one look at the horse racing results show she's not been at her best recently. However, she's now dropped 10lbs this term and you only have to go back to the form of her two Windsor runs in June to begin to think that she looks potentially well treated again. Her best two efforts have, admittedly, been on testing ground but she's also won when it's quick. She could make the long trip from Devon worthwhile if she can pick up some prize money and she is a sporting each-way suggestion with an intriguing 18/1 price available on betting apps. Wednesday Ebor Festival tip 5: Woolhampton (York, 16.45) – 0.5pts each-way @ 18/1 Bet365 Please gamble responsibly Bettors should always practice responsible gambling. Fever share hilarious scenes from team's trip to Indiana State Fair
With the Indiana State Fair underway this weekend in Indianapolis, the Indiana Fever sent a few of their star players on a Thursday trip to the annual festival that included some hilarious reviews of the various food options, a petting zoo experience, and many other activities. In one of the numerous social media posts shared by the Fever showcasing the activities Sophie Cunningham, Natasha Howard, Sydney Colson, and Kelsey Mitchell endured during the trip, the group gave their honest opinions on popular food items. All four players tried items such as a dill pickle corn dog, a regular corn dog, a Hot Cheetos corn dog, corn on the cob, funnel cake, and deep-fried Oreos. After sampling and reviewing the various culinary concoctions, the group headed to the petting zoo, where they were swarmed by numerous baby goats seeking food from the Fever stars. One of the highlights of the animal encounter was a hungry goat nibbling on Colson's shorts in an attempt to get some of the feed. The team also shared a feature specifically focused on Kelsey Mitchell's experiences at the State Fair as she followed along with the rest of the three Fever stars. Michell was seen tasting the food and taking a spin on some of the rides, which ultimately tired out the seventh-year guard. In the Fever closed out their fun day at the Indiana State Fair by sharing behind-the-scenes footage of the numerous moments that didn't make the final cut in their previous videos and a few pictures of all four experiencing the festival's activities. The 2025 Indiana State Fair began on Friday, August 1, and runs until Sunday, August 17, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds & Event Center in Indianapolis. While the team had a blast during their day at the Indiana State Fair, they will need to collectively refocus on making a strong, late-season push towards the 2025 WNBA Playoffs by racking up wins as the regular season winds down.
