TV REVIEW: 'Miracle of Istanbul' is nostalgia on steroids for Liverpool fans - and has a unique way of tapping into moments from memorable campaign

Daily Mail19-05-2025

If you utter the words 'Miracle of Istanbul' to a football fan, they instantly know what you are on about. Even those who were born after the fateful day in 2005, when Liverpool made history at the Ataturk Stadium, will be able to recite what happened.
Those famous six minutes. The six minutes of madness that turned The Reds' Champions League final with AC Milan into an all-time classic. The six minutes are the only reason I am sitting down and writing this article.
We all know the story. At 8.30pm on May 26, 2005, Liverpool's dreams of a fifth European Cup had seemingly been crushed. It was seemingly all over, well, until it wasn't. Three goals in six second-half minutes changed everything, and you know the rest. You still may not believe it, but you know it happened.
It's always about those six minutes, or that Jerzy Dudek double save, or the fact that the Pole waltzed about three metres off his line for every single spot-kick in the penalty shootout.
But the 'Miracle in Istanbul' isn't just about one night; it's about the magical route there. As John Arne Riise, who started the final, tells Mail Sport, 'The road to Istanbul was most remarkable.'
20 years on, TNT Sports' one-hour-long documentary, which is set to premiere at 21:45 on Sunday 25 May, takes you through the highs and lows of Liverpool's journey to that meeting with Milan.
Now, as I said, you've all seen this story a thousand times. Search 'Miracle of Istanbul' and hundreds of videos about that momentous occasion come up. Each one tries to find a new angle, but most fail.
That's the thing, it's hard to find a new angle on a story that everybody knows about. So, how could this story be told in a new light? How can you get an audience hooked? How can you tap into the memories of the Liverpool fans in a different way?
TNT Sports have had a fairly good crack at it. The documentary takes you right back to the start of the 2004-05 season and all the way to the final. In fact, the final doesn't even take up half of the watch time.
You relive everything from that Steven Gerrard winner against Olympiacos in the group stage, to Luis Garcia's ghost goal in the semi-final against Chelsea. It's all about the journey.
If you are a Liverpool fan, you are going to love it. For those who were alive in 2005, this documentary will take you right back to the glory days.
For football fans of rival teams, though, it's probably not for you - it's not meant to be. It's meant to allow Reds supporters to tap into their memory banks and reminisce with memories that have been forgotten in the past 20 years.
The documentary is nostalgia on steroids, and anybody in connection with Liverpool will want the juice.
In the current era, where documentaries need to have fly-on-the-wall footage, and everything requires behind-the-scenes clips to make them groundbreaking, this is a throwback to good old storytelling.
Rafael Benitez, Steve McManaman, Gerrard, Riise, Dudek, and Vladimir Smicer all take you through their own experiences of that season in the Champions League. They give you an insight into what was running through their minds at the time.
Whether that be Riise's regret of going against 'who I am', or Gerrard still not being able to believe what happened. It taps into all the emotions of the rollercoaster that season was.
Arguably, the most thrilling part of the ride was the famous semi-final second leg against Chelsea. Yep, the ghost goal one.
Over the last 20 years, Anfield has had many special nights, whether that be the miraculous 4-0 win over Barcelona or the stunning comeback against Borussia Dortmund back in 2016, but that night against Jose Mourinho's all-conquering Chelsea side will always stand out.
'What I remember from that game, when it comes to atmosphere, was when the fourth official put up six minutes of injury time, that's when Anfield just lifted. It was unbelievable,' Riise continues.
'That atmosphere was the best atmosphere I have ever played in.'
Every player and fan who talks in the documentary recalls it in the same way, and the archived footage backs it up beautifully.
It shows the roar after Garcia's goal, and even though you are watching it on television, your eardrums could still burst. I advise you to turn the volume down when you get to that part.
And this section of the documentary shows what TNT have done so well - they let the footage do the talking. The outpouring of emotion will funnel through the screen and into Liverpool fans' hearts as they relive what truly was a one-of-a-kind European Cup triumph.

Lauren revealed last month that she is having her 'heavy' breast implants removed and can't wait to go back to a 'natural look'. The reality star shared a snap of herself posing in a sheer dusty pink baby doll, showing off her very ample assets. She wrote in the lengthy caption: '11 years ago I had a breast augmentation, one of the things I regret later in life. Just hours before she was pictured at the departures terminal, Lauren told her fans she was worried about leaving her little girl and combatting her flying fear. Lauren welcomed Larose, four, with her then-boyfriend Charles Drury and revealed how she had not left her daughter to go on holiday since her birth. Taking to her Instagram Stories, Lauren posted a selfie and wrote: '5am and I'm on my way to the airport. I have not done this in over 5 years! 'I feel many mixed emotions. Woke LGBT publication sparks outrage after asking if Anne Frank 'was a lesbian or bisexual'

A progressive LGBTQ media outlet has sparked outrage on social media after speculating about the sexuality of Anne Frank. Pink News ran an article on the late Holocaust victim this week, writing, 'Was Anne Frank lesbian or bisexual? Her diary certainly proves she was attracted to girls.' While the Jewish teenager's diary does indeed indicate that she may have been attracted to boys and girls, some social media users were still outraged by the speculation. 'Shut the f**k up. It's no one's business and to speculate is more than morbid, and incredibly crass. WTF is wrong with you?' raged one. 'Can you please take this down? It is unnecessary and degrading,' wrote another. A third added, 'You are not, in any way, helping your cause with this. It's baffling to me.' However, some users felt that the article was valid considering how much Anne shared about her own sexuality in her widely published diary. 'Why is it normal to fill kids Disney movies with romantic plots and that's not seen as sexual but as soon as it's not a hetero love interest it's "sexual". God forbid you ever had a crush on someone as a kid,' asked one. 'Me and my friends were obsessed with Anne Frank's undiscussed bisexuality in middle school and whenever we did something covertly gay we called it Franking,' added another. In her diary, Anne hinted at potential romantic feelings for her best friend Jacqueline van Maarsen. However, she also had a crush on friend Peter van Pels. Anne Frank was a German-born Jewish girl known for keeping a diary documenting her life in hiding amid Nazi persecution during Hitler's occupation of the Netherlands. Anne, her older sister and parents lived in an apartment near Merwede square, after moving to the Dutch capital from Nazi Germany in 1938. The Frank family were forced to go into hiding four years later when the persecution of Jews escalated. Users on social media were divided, but many found the speculation offensive They lived in concealed rooms behind a bookcase in the building where Anne's father, Otto Frank, worked. The family were discovered by the Gestapo in 1944 and sent to concentration camps. Anne and her sister, Margot, were transferred from Auschwitz to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they died. Otto was the only Holocaust survivor in the Frank family. In 1947, he published Anne's diary about their life in hiding, submitting to history arguably the most moving testament of World War II. It remains one of the most widely read books in the world, with more than 30 million people having read The Diary Of A Young Girl in 70 languages. Its author has become an icon of quiet defiance against the Nazis and a symbol of the indomitable human spirit. Anne Frank was a German-born Jewish girl known for keeping a diary documenting her life in hiding amid Nazi persecution during Hitler's occupation of the Netherlands In February, Anne's best friend Jacqueline Sanders-van Maarsen died aged 96. Jacqueline met Anne at school in Amsterdam in 1941, after the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands. Their friendship lasted for a full school year before Anne was forced into hiding with her family in July 1942. The pair always promised to write each other a farewell letter if they could no longer see each other. On September 25, 1942, Anne penned the promised letter in her diary, writing: 'I hope that until we see each other again, we will always remain "best" friends.' A statement from the Anne Frank Museum said: 'With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Jacqueline Sanders-van Maarsen on 13 February at the age of 96. 'Jacqueline was a classmate of Anne Frank at the Jewish Lyceum and shared her memories of their friendship throughout her life.'

David Beckham ‘immensely proud' of knighthood in King's Birthday Honours

The sports star, who celebrated his 50th birthday last month, is being honoured for services to sport and charity. Sir David said in a statement to the PA news agency: 'Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour. 'To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true. 'Off the pitch I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation. 'I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.' Sir David married his wife Victoria in 1999 and the couple share four children together – Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper. He had been set on becoming a professional footballer as a child and as a teenager he joined Manchester United as a trainee, forming part of the class of '92 that won the FA Youth Cup, along with Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville. The sports star from north east London made his Premier League debut for United in 1995 and was part of the team that earned a dramatic Champions League final victory in 1999 when they beat Bayern Munich with two late goals. In total he scored 85 goals and collected honours including six Premier League titles and two FA Cups as a footballer, before retiring from the sport in 2013. Alongside his football career Sir David has supported a number of charity causes and launched a fundraising appeal for Unicef in April ahead of his milestone 50th birthday. He has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for humanitarian aid organisation Unicef since 2005 and is a founding member of the charity Malaria No More UK's leadership council. Philip Goodwin, Unicef UK chief executive said: 'We're so thrilled that our Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, David Beckham, has been awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours. 'David Beckham has done an incredible amount to advocate for children's rights over the last 20 years. 'He became a Goodwill Ambassador in 2005 and launched 7: The David Beckham Unicef Fund in 2015 – with the goal of helping children around the world, especially girls, break down barriers including bullying, violence, child marriage and missed education. 'He's travelled extensively to see Unicef's work and used his profile to raise awareness, as well as support our flagship fundraising campaign Soccer Aid for Unicef and launch global fundraising appeals.' Last year the former sports star, who has described himself as a 'huge Royalist', was named an ambassador for the King's Foundation, an educational charity established by the King in 1990. In February Sir David appeared in a video helping to launch the hunt for '35 under 35', a network of influencers who can fly the flag for the charity which reflects Charles' vision. He is also known for his stylish clothing choices, and in 1998 was named most stylish man of the year by GQ magazine and he has modelled for the likes of H&M, Armani and Boss. In 2018 he was appointed Ambassadorial President of the British Fashion Council where he assisted the BFC in its search for young British talent from all backgrounds. His wife, Victoria, turned her hand to fashion designing after her time in the Spice Girls and Sir David and their four children are often spotted at her shows. Sir David is currently a part-owner of MLS side Inter Miami, and is also the co-founder of Studio 99, the production company behind the hit Netflix series Beckham. He was formerly appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003.
