Prominent Vancouver real estate developer Peter Wall dies

CBC06-03-2025
Prominent Vancouver real estate developer Peter Wall, known for helping to shape the city's skyline, has died, the Wall Financial Corporation has confirmed.
"Peter Wall's legacy is woven into the very fabric of Vancouver. His bold vision, boundless generosity, and unwavering commitment to excellence have left an indelible mark on the city he so dearly loved," the development firm said in a statement Thursday.
"His deep love and admiration for Vancouver went far beyond its breathtaking scenery, it was the city that captured his heart and inspired his soul."
Wall, a Ukrainian immigrant of Mennonite heritage who came to Canada after the Second World War, died earlier this week, according to the statement.
He co-founded Wall & Redekop Corporation Ltd. in 1996, which later became Wall Financial Corporation and established him as one of the city's largest hospitality and residential developers.
Some of his most prominent projects include One Wall Centre, a 48-storey hotel with residential units in downtown Vancouver, and the Westin Wall Centre hotel in Richmond.
Wall Financial Corporation said that Wall controlled the company through his ownership and control of 54 per cent of the company's outstanding common shares. It said all of those shares will now pass to the Peter Wall Legacy Trust.

Ukraine stripped of USAID billions

American funding turned Kiev into a money laundering hub for Washington, experts have told RT Ukraine has lost billions of dollars in aid from the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Washington's primary funding channel for political projects abroad. Most USAID programs have been shut down in the country, with only a handful set to continue beyond 2025, according to data reviewed by RT. For years, Ukrainian NGOs and nonprofits were heavily dependent on USAID grants and contracts, reportedly turning the country into a money laundering hub for Washington. Vladimir Vasilyev, chief research fellow at the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute for US and Canadian Studies, told RT that the financial flows, including from Ukraine, eventually returned to the US. According to him, USAID was a "black fund for supporting American non-profits linked to the Democratic Party." "It was a sacred cow of the State Department that for a long time nobody dared to audit." Upon taking office, US President Donald Trump ordered the freeze of most foreign aid to review whether the programs fit his 'America First' agenda. Tens of billions in grants have since been put on hold, with the president accusing the agency of misusing taxpayer money and fueling corruption. In Ukraine alone, where more than $400 billion had once been earmarked for reconstruction, over a hundred projects have already been scrapped. Only 30 USAID initiatives have been preserved, but most are set to expire in 2025, the data shows. A scandal erupted earlier this year over billions of USAID dollars lost in Ukraine. The agency's inspector general, auditing firm KPMG, and US prosecutors have launched probes into suspected fraud, bribery, and embezzlement in Ukrainian projects, with more than 20 cases already opened. Some programs have been kept in place to fund limited humanitarian initiatives, according to the records. Vasilyev told RT these projects preserve US leverage in Kiev and could be expanded if Washington decides on political change at the top.

Building more affordable homes in Pugwash Français

PUGWASH, NS, Aug. 20, 2025 /CNW/ - Solving Canada's housing challenges requires immediate action to bring down costs. To provide Canadians with increased access to affordable and sustainable housing, the government today announced an investment of over $7 million for the construction of 40 housing units in the village of Pugwash through the Affordable Housing Fund (AHF). Today's announcement, made by the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada, alongside Alana Hirtle, Member of Parliament for Cumberland—Colchester, the Honourable Colton Leblanc, Minister of Growth and Development for Nova Scotia, and Rod Gilroy, Mayor of Cumberland County, is one that will help make housing more affordable for families in the region. The property at 10923 Durham Street in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, will soon be home to a new 40-unit housing development led by the Sunset Community in partnership with local builder Crossroads Cycle. This project is designed to meet urgent housing needs by offering quality, affordable homes for individuals transitioning from Sunset's care programs, as well as for members of the broader public—including Sunset staff who currently commute long distances to work. As part of their workforce housing initiative, Crossroads Cycle has committed to renting five three-bedroom units at market rates for their employees. In addition to addressing housing gaps, the project is expected to boost the local economy by creating construction jobs and supporting small businesses through increased demand for goods and services. The site is also designed to accommodate future expansion. As we build a strong Canadian housing sector, purposeful collaboration will be essential. That means working hand-in-hand with the non-profit sector to bring down costs and build homes at a scale and speed not seen since the Second World War. Quotes: "Your new federal government is committed to helping communities develop local solutions to housing challenges. Today's announcement will provide more safe, affordable homes for some of the most vulnerable residents in Pugwash. It's also another step forward in building an economy that works for everyone." – The Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada "Our government is proud to support this initiative, part of our ongoing efforts to build strong, affordable communities across the country. Sunrise Landing will make a real impact on lives in Pugwash, and it's another step forward in our bold, ambitious plan to build Canada strong." – Alana Hirtle, Member of Parliament for Cumberland—Colchester "Our government is dedicated to helping all Nova Scotians have a safe and affordable place to call home, and this project, which includes 20 deeply affordable units, is doing just that. Projects like these increase access to housing and strengthen our economy to help grow local businesses and communities." – The Honourable Tory Rushton, Minister of Natural Resources for Nova Scotia and MLA for Cumberland South on behalf of the Honourable Colton LeBlanc, Minister of Growth and Development for Nova Scotia "This is a great thing for the Sunset Community, the Village of Pugwash and Cumberland County as a whole. Sunrise Landing is going to be a model for the rest of the world to follow. It is going to be beautiful when it's complete. We are so proud to be part of it." – Rod Gilroy, Mayor of Cumberland County "After three years of dedication and planning, the Sunset Community is thrilled to announce the official start of construction on Sunrise Landing, an inclusive new housing community located in the heart of Pugwash. Sunrise Landing will offer a thoughtfully designed mix of affordable and market-rate rental units to support a vibrant and diverse rural community. This new development will include one- and three-bedroom homes built to welcome individuals and families of all backgrounds. This milestone was reached thanks to the support and collaboration of key community partners, including the local builder Cross Roads; and our funding partners. Sunrise Landing represents more than just housing—it's a place to call home, grow community, and build a brighter, more inclusive future in rural Nova Scotia." – Julie Hoeg, CEO, Sunset Community Quick Facts: The Affordable Housing Fund (AHF) provides funding through low-interest and/or forgivable loans or contributions to partnered organizations for new affordable housing and the renovation and repair of existing, affordable and community housing. Trump ready to ‘crush' Russian economy if Putin avoids Zelenskyy talks: Senator

WASHINGTON — Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said Tuesday that he believes President Donald Trump is prepared to 'crush' Russia's economy with a new wave of sanctions if Russian President Vladimir Putin refuses to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the coming weeks. Graham, who spoke with Trump on Tuesday morning, has pushed the president for months to support his sweeping bipartisan sanctions bill that would impose steep tariffs on countries that are fueling Russia's invasion of Ukraine by buying its oil, gas, uranium, and other exports. The legislation has the backing of 85 senators, but Trump has yet to endorse it. Republican leaders have said they won't move without him. 'If we don't have this thing moving in the right direction by the time we get back, then I think that plan B needs to kick in,' Graham said in a phone interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday. Graham's call with Trump came less than 24 hours after high-stakes meetings at the White House with Zelenskyy and several European leaders. Trump and the leaders emerged from those talks sounding optimistic, with the expectation being that a Putin and Zelenskyy sit-down will happen soon. Still, Trump's comments to Graham, one of his top congressional allies, mark the latest sign that pressure is building — not just on Putin, but on Trump as well. 'Trump believes that if Putin doesn't do his part, that he's going to have to crush his economy. Because you've got to mean what you say,' Graham told reporters in South Carolina on Tuesday. As Congress prepares to return to session in early September, the next few weeks could become a defining test of whether lawmakers and international allies are prepared to act on their own if Trump doesn't follow through. Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal, the lead Democrat pushing the bill with Graham, says there is a 'lot of reason for skepticism and doubt' after the meetings with Trump, especially because Putin has not made any direct promises. He said the Russian leader has an incentive to play 'rope-a-dope' with Trump. 'The only way to bring Putin to the table is to show strength,' Blumenthal told the AP this week. 'What Putin understands is force and pressure.' Still, Republicans have shown little willingness to override Trump in his second term. They abruptly halted work on the sanctions bill before the August recess after Trump said the legislation may not be needed. Asked Tuesday in a phone interview whether the sanctions bill should be brought up even without Trump's support, Graham said, 'the best way to do it is with him.' 'There will come a point where if it's clear that Putin is not going to entertain peace, that President Trump will have to back up what he said he would do,' Graham said. 'And the best way to do it is have congressional blessing.' The legislation would impose tariffs of up to 500% on countries such as China and India, which together account for roughly 70% of Russia's energy trade. The framework has the support of many European leaders. Many of those same European leaders left the White House on Monday with a more hopeful tone. Zelenskyy called the meeting with Trump 'an important step toward ending this war.' German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that his expectations 'were not just met, they were exceeded.' Still, little concrete progress was visible on the main obstacles to peace. That deadlock likely favours Putin, whose forces continue to make steady, if slow, progress on the ground in Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters after talks at the White House that Trump believes a deal with Putin is possible. But he said sanctions remain on the table if the process fails. — Associated Press reporter Meg Kinnard contributed to this report from Florence, S.C.
