Bangladeshi woman living under fake identity for 2 years arrested in Chhattisgarh
RAIPUR: In a major breakthrough, the Special Task Force (STF) formed to trace illegal immigrants in Chhattisgarh has arrested a Bangladeshi woman who had been living in Bhilai's Supela area under a false identity for two years.
She was found to be using a forged Aadhaar card and had been availing government services using the fake identity.
Durg SSP Vijay Agrawal, during a press conference, confirmed that the arrested woman's real name is Panna Bibi, a native of Khulna district in Bangladesh.
She had been living under the name Anjali Singh alias Kakoli Ghosh, using falsified documents including a forged Aadhaar card, which she used for treatment in a government hospital.
The forgery raised suspicions, prompting authorities to investigate further, leading to her arrest.
During interrogation, Panna Bibi revealed she illegally entered India eight years ago through the Bangaon-Petrapole border in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, using a fake passport and visa. After arriving, she spent five years in Sonagachi, Kolkata — a locality known for the sex trade — under the name Kakoli Ghosh.

She then moved to Delhi for a year and later relocated to Bhilai along with a friend named Pooja.
While living in Bhilai, Panna Bibi continued engaging in illegal activities and sent money regularly back to her family in Bangladesh, police said. The funds were first transferred to her contacts in Kolkata, who would then deliver the money across the India-Bangladesh border. Her mobile phone records show regular contact with over a dozen Bangladeshi numbers belonging to family members.
The house owner, Suraj Saw, who rented his property to the woman without any police verification, was also arrested. Authorities have charged him for harbouring a foreign national without proper documentation and aiding an illegal immigrant.
The woman was charged under multiple sections including Sections 318, 319, and 336(3) under BNS, Section 14(1) of the Foreigners Act, and Sections 3(2) and 3(3) of Passports Act.
SSP Agrawal stated that the investigation will now focus on how she managed to enter India through illegal means, who assisted her in fiddling with the identity and document forgery. Police are probing into the possibility of a larger network involved in facilitating such illegal immigration.
The STF will write to relevant agencies and authorities to further probe the case and take necessary action against all involved.
Police recovered the fake Aadhaar card and mobile phone records proving the suspect's continuous contact with people in Bangladesh.
The accused woman had also been traveling between India and Bangladesh through border routes multiple times during her stay in Bhilai.
This arrest comes as part of a state initiative to identify and deport illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants residing in Chhattisgarh.

THANE: A 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl in the Khartan Road locality of Thane West on Thursday. The incident took place on Thursday evening near a Marathi balwadi (preschool) located in the Patimataijinagar locality. Road rage turns into sword attack in Ambernath, two seriously hurt
THANE: A minor road rage incident escalated into a violent sword attack on a street in Barkupada, in Ambernath East, on Friday evening. A group of men brandishing swords, allegedly goons linked to a political party, launched a frenzied attack on local residents, leaving the street bloodied, and panicked residents scrambling for cover as the assailants ran amuck. Two people were seriously injured and several others hurt. The incident occurred around 5:00pm near Durga Mandir, when a woman in her early 20s, daughter of a former corporator, honked at a local resident, Mahesh Rajput, 28, who was crossing the street. Witnesses say the woman stopped her car and began to hurl expletives at Mahesh. 'Does your father own the street,' she challenged. Mahesh's elder brother Mangesh, 32, who filed a police complaint after the attack, later said, 'My brother stepped aside but she halted her car and insulted him. When we questioned her, she took photos of us, saying she would 'deal with us later'.' Around 15 minutes later, a group of armed men arrived at the spot. First, two of them pulled up on a motorcycle, and then a car carrying five to six men armed with swords and choppers drew up. Armed with photos of the Rajput brothers on their mobile phones, earlier clicked by the corporator's daughter, they began seeking out Mahesh. Mobile phone footage of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing a group of men brandishing swords in the street while screaming residents run for cover. Both injured brothers are being treated at a private hospital in Kalyan. Local residents have identified some of the assailants, saying they are political party workers, who were trying to assert their supremacy ahead of local body elections to be held later this year. A day after the attack, Barkupada was still tense on Saturday evening, with a strong police presence in the neighbourhood. The Shivajinagar Police have registered a case against ten unnamed men based on a complaint filed by Mangesh Rajput. The case has been filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with the Indian Arms Act and Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act (MPDA). Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Sachin Gore said, 'A case has been registered against ten accused, and teams are searching for them. Strict action will be taken against all those involved in this act of violence. We are trying to ascertain where they secured the weapons.'
