Are CPFs equipped to tackle crime?
CPFs were established to involve local stakeholders in the fight against and prevention of crime in their respective policing areas.
According to the SAPS, these forums meet regularly with the police officers in charge of CPFs in their local police stations to discuss crime-related issues and to find solutions.
The question of the effectiveness of CPFs in crime prevention and fighting has been raised across the board, in particular, whether these forums are adequately trained and sufficiently supported and resourced in order to carry out their mandate.

In response to a parliamentary question to the minister of police in April this year, it was indicated that the SAPS supports and directly provides assistance to CPFs and community patrollers by providing resources, and procedural guidelines 'that are designed to improve the safety of CPF members and community patrollers while deployed in support of the SAPS'.
The response further stated that in the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 financial years, the SAPS budgeted R140m for 'CPFs to procure vehicles, physical equipment and information technology to support their functioning'.
Additionally, it was said in the parliamentary response that the SAPS, working with provincial governments, is looking into possibly setting up Community Patrol Control Centres 'which will receive and co-ordinate urgent notifications from community patrollers' who work under CPFs 'as the eyes and ears of the SAPS'.

They are trained to not engage armed criminals

No arrests yet after body of 21-year-old found in Winterveldt
No arrests yet after body of 21-year-old found in Winterveldt No suspect has been arrested for the murder of 21-year-old Thulisile Mhlongo, whose body was discovered on June 26 at a dumping site in Winterveld. She had sustained multiple stab wounds and severe head injuries. According to SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Marinda Austin, 'The deceased was transported to Ga-Rankuwa Forensic Pathology Center and investigations are still ongoing.' Austin urged all young women to remain vigilant and prioritise their safety at all times saying, 'Be cautious of your surroundings, avoid walking alone in unsafe areas, and always inform someone about your whereabouts. Build a strong support network in your own family, and don't hesitate to report any threats or suspicious behaviour to the police.' Rekord spoke to Thulisile's father, Jacky Mhlogo, who said they were first informed of this tragic incident by a person close to their daughter, who had called to tell them that a body had been found at a dumping site in Winterveldt. On receiving this news they went to the dumping site to confirm her identity. 'Upon our arrival, we realised that the lifeless body was indeed of our daughter,' he said, continuing that as he came closer he noticed that Thulisile's body had been stabbed many times. Mhlogo said it will take time for them to come to terms with what happened to their daughter as they are still shocked and in disbelief. He said: 'We had big plans for Thuli and expected great things from her. I work as a driver, and we were planning to buy a truck to start a logistics business, where Thuli would be responsible for overseeing the operations. Now that her life was cut short, we feel completely robbed.' Thulisile's aunt, Nkateko Mhlongo, said the family is distraught over the loss of the young child, adding, 'It is sad, and I am still in disbelief about what happened to my niece'. She urged the police to arrest the person responsiblein order to find closure as the family, as all they want is for justice to prevail. SAPS recruitment: Over 67 000 applications received in 24 hours
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that it received over 67 000 applications within 24 hours for the Basic Police Learning Development Programme (BPLDP) through its e-recruitment system. The SAPS launched the e-recruitment system on Monday, 30 June, as it seeks 5 500 new trainees to join its ranks. For the first time in history, the SAPS is utilising an Electronic Recruitment System, through which youth from all walks of life can submit their applications to be considered for the entry-level police trainee posts. SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the shift to a digital platform is expected to reduce paperwork, curb corruption and nepotism, and prevent lost applications. It is also expected to enhance fairness, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and improve the integrity and speed of the recruitment process. Mathe said the nationwide recruitment drive begins today, 30 June, with online applications closing on 18 July. It targets young men and women aged 18 to 35 to join as police trainees for the 2025/2026 financial year. 'Qualifying young men and women without criminal records and/or pending criminal cases are encouraged to apply by visiting then select the e-Recruitment portal from the drop down menu. 'It is worth mentioning that the SAPS will implement a targeted recruitment process to identify and consider applicants with specific skills and/or qualifications, i.e., Graduates in Law, Policing, Criminology, Law Enforcement, Forensic Investigation, and Information Technology, for placement in the specialised environments such as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Detective and Forensic Services as well as Crime Intelligence (CI),' she explained. Additionally, applicants will be subjected to a rigorous selection process, which entails: psychometric, integrity, physical fitness assessments, and fingerprint/vetting screening as well as medical evaluations to ensure that the SAPS enlist disciplined, energetic, intelligent, physically and mentally fit individuals, dedicated to serving their country through Policing, Unsurprisingly, the website is experiencing a delayed response due to traffic volumes. Mathe said the Technology Management Services (TMS) , inclusive of IT experts, are continuously monitoring the influx of applications. 'Applicants are therefore advised to be patient and to continue to refresh the careers page. Applicants are reminded that the closing date is 18 July 2025 and all applications should be submitted via the website portal and not via email,' Mathe added.
