How are Newcastle acting sustainably?
Whether a top Premier League club or a supporter of one, even small sustainable actions "can have a lasting impact".The effects of climate change are being felt in many different ways and football is not immune to these.Previous research, external has suggested a quarter of professional football pitches will be at risk of flooding by 2050.While so much of fans' focus is what is happening on the pitch, there is an increasing expectation from supporters that clubs should be doing more to reduce their impact off it.Earth Day on 22 April provides a chance to reflect on the positive actions that are being taken by clubs to reduce their impact on the environment and help their local communities.Newcastle United have been increasingly working towards becoming more sustainable, reducing their impact and working more with communities. Some recent initiatives have included:The Magpie Mover scheme provides season ticket holders with unlimited travel on the metro, bus and ferry during home matchdays, at a cost of £25 per season;A waste recycling operation at St James' Park for the women's Tyne-Wear derby and the Premier League match against Manchester United, with a team of green ambassadors working around the Gallowgate End to promote recycling and educate fans about positive sustainable actions;Newcastle United and the Newcastle United Foundation recently launching a football boot donation drive to support local children while enhancing sustainability practice within the community. The initiative is designed to encourage fans to donate unwanted or pre-loved football boots, which will be rehomed by the Ashington Boot Room to ensure they are given a second life with young aspiring footballers in the North East.Of the boot donation scheme, Newcastle United sustainability manager Helen Hughes said: "Adopting even the smallest of sustainable actions can have a lasting impact on the community."Through the boot drive, we aim to reduce waste by expanding the lifecycle of materials, while also providing local young players with equipment that will support their enjoyment of the game."We're pleased to offer this opportunity for the Newcastle United family to support both the environment and the next generation of footballers."

Rangers on verge of appointing Russell Martin as new head coach
The appointment of a new man at the helm is the latest in a series of major changes at the club. An American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises secured a majority shareholding on Friday and new sporting director Kevin Thelwell officially began work on Monday, when he said that the recruitment of a new head coach would come to a conclusion 'in the coming days'. Russell Martin played for Rangers (Jeff Holmes/PA) Outgoing Real Madrid assistant manager Davide Ancelotti, son of Carlo Ancelotti, and Martin were the two frontrunners for the post, vacated by Philippe Clement in February, with former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson taking over to the end of the season, which ended trophyless. However, it is the former MK Dons and Swansea boss, who had a short loan spell as a player at Rangers in 2018, who will be tasked with wrestling the power back from the other side of the city where Celtic this season won their 13th William Hill Premiership title in 14 seasons and have a stranglehold on Scottish football. However, many Rangers fans have revealed some dismay at the notion of Martin's arrival. The former Scotland international brought Southampton up to the Premier League through the play-offs in 2024 but was sacked in December as they headed back towards the Championship with one win from their first 16 games. Chris Hughton, Martin's boss at Norwich, offered a glowing character reference, saying on talkSPORT: 'If I'm looking at Russell's managerial background, he is known of course, for playing a certain way, very expansive in the way that he wants to play, very much a passing game and progression through the thirds. Philippe Clement was sacked by Rangers in February (Steve Welsh/PA) 'But he's a strong personality also. He's had a few knockbacks in his football career so far. 'I think any knockbacks, he will look at very much as experience and look to improve in every aspect that he can. I saw him recently, and he was in good form and really looking forward to getting back into the game. 'I think he's had a few offers. So this is somebody that's still very respected in the game, and of course, the rollercoaster in management, there are always going to be ups and downs, but he's a very confident individual and very confident in what he wants to do on the football pitch. 'He was very much a leader in the changing room, vocal in the meetings that we had and, of course, he was my voice when it came to any sort of direction on the players. 'So no surprise to me that he eventually went into management. He always showed those characteristics. And he was somebody that, as he improved in his career as a player, is of course very much looking to improve the same way in management.'

Russell Martin has agreed a deal in principle to become the next head coach of Rangers with an appointment expected before the weekend. The Scotsman understands that, barring any last minute hitches, the former Scotland international will become Philippe Clement's successor following more positive talks over the last 24 hours. It will mark a return to Ibrox for the 39-year-old ex-defender, who spent six months on loan at Rangers from Norwich City in the second half of the 2017-18 season. The search for a head coach has been spearheaded by newly-installed sporting director Kevin Thelwell and Greitar Steinsson, technical director for 49ers Enterprises. (Photo by Andrew Matthews/PA Wire) Davide Ancelotti had also been in the frame but talks between the new Rangers regime and the son of Carlo Ancelotti, who was his father's assistant at Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli and Everton appear to have broken down in recent days. Martin has been out of work since being sacked by Southampton in December. He led Saints to promotion via the Championship play-offs last May but managed only one victory and 13 defeats in 16 Premier League matches. He has also previously managed Swansea City and MK Dons, where he became renowned for a possession-based brand of football. According to reports, Martin's long term assistant boss Matty Gill will be joining him at Ibrox, with former Rangers full-back Maurice Ross also said to be lined up for a coaching role. Former Crystal Palace star Mark Bright marries Ian Wright's estranged sister Dionne - after Arsenal legend revealed two decade family feud
Former Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright has married the estranged sister of his ex-team-mate Ian Wright. Bright had formed a formidable partnership with Wright when they played together at Crystal Palace from 1986 to 1991, before the latter moved to Arsenal. The pair became close friends off the pitch and, over the years, have been photographed together at social functions on numerous occasions. During an interview on the True Geordie podcast in 2019, Wright revealed that Bright was dating his sister Dionne. Wright revealed at the time that he had not spoken to Dionne for 15 years, claiming that she had been 'disrespectful' to his second wife Nancy soon after the couple got together. Bright and Dionne have now tied the knot, with the former Premier League star, 62, sharing photos from their wedding day on Instagram. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mark Bright (@markbright_) Wright revealed in 2019 that he had not spoken to Dionne for 15 years after she 'blanked' his wife Nancy (pictured in 2006) 'in front of people' during the taping of a Channel 4 show In a post also referencing Crystal Palace's FA Cup triumph against Man City at Wembley, Bright wrote: 'A great end to the season and an even better start to the summer, thank you to all our family and friends who helped make our day so special.' 'We created some amazing memories at a great venue, with good people, good food, and good music.' Bright signed off the message with 'D&M'. It is unknown whether Wright has mended his relationship with Dionne following his comments about his sister back in 2019, which he made on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! Speaking of how the relationship affects the dynamic with his longtime friend, Wright had said: 'Mark Bright is somebody like a big brother and someone I respect who has guided me. What will happen if they get married? 'Is she going to apologise before she walks up the aisle? I want something to happen because my wife does not deserve to be treated like this. My sister has not found the decency to realise she should have apologised by now. 'I haven't spoken to my sister for 15 years. She was very disrespectful to my wife when we had just got together. She obviously knew my ex-wife and my kids so she felt like she had to take a side which I couldn't understand because I am her brother.' While Ian claimed the pair didn't have a good relationship growing up, things turned sour between them when Dionne 'blanked' Nancy 'in front of people' when she met up with him while he was filming a show for Channel 4. In the midst of a heated ensuing confrontation with his sister, the former Arsenal ace vowed that he would 'never have to see [Dionne] again' after she refused to apologise to Nancy. Father-of-eight Wright has been with Nancy since 2011 and they have two daughters - Roxanne and Lola - together. Sharon Phillips is mum to his eldest boys, Shaun and Bradley Wright-Phillips. His third son is Brett who he had with another girlfriend. He married now ex-wife Deborah in 1993 and they had son, Stacey, and daughter Bobbi together. Bright was previously married to singer and actress Michelle Gayle from 1996 until their union ended in divorce in 2008.
