Miranchuk goal in the 87th minute pulls Atlanta United into draw with CF Montreal

MONTREAL (AP) — Aleksey Miranchuk late goal helped Atlanta United forge a 1-1 draw against CF Montreal on Saturday.
A corner from Saba Lobjanidze caused chaos in the Montreal penalty area and led to Miranchuk nodding the ball home from just a few inches out at the 87th minute.
Atlanta (4-11-10) nearly pulled out the win at the 90th minute, but Miguel Almiron's curling shot hit the crossbar.
Dante Sealy opened the scoring in the 40th minute for Montreal (4-15-7), which is still searching for its second home win in MLS play this season.
After finding space behind the Atlanta (4-11-10) defense, Caden Clark found himself in a two-on-one situation and slid the ball across to Sealy for the score.
Newly arrived Montreal goalkeeper Thomas Gillier had his hands full early, making a series of key saves amid the Atlanta pressure. After intermission, the two swapped possession and half-chances.

Mariners win eighth straight behind George Kirby gem, move to 0.5 games back from Astros

The Seattle Mariners are the hottest team in the American League and on the verge of becoming a division leader. With a 1-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, the Mariners took their eighth straight game and moved to a half-game back of the Houston Astros, who are currently playing the Boston Red Sox for first in the AL West. Should the Astros lose, it will be a tie atop the division with a month and a half to go. The Mariners had previously trailed by as many as seven games in early July. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The big turning point was the MLB trade deadline, when Seattle picked up the Arizona Diamondbacks' corner infield with separate details for third baseman Eugenio Suarez and first baseman Josh Naylor, plus Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Caleb Ferguson. The Mariners are 10-1 since the deadline passed on July 31. It was Naylor who came up big on Tuesday, delivering the only RBI of the game with a single in the first inning. Of course, the more valuable player for the game was starting pitcher George Kirby who struck out seven, walked none and allowed only three hits in seven scoreless innings on 87 pitches. Eduard Bazardo, Gabe Speier and Andrés Muñoz combined for two more scoreless innings out of the bullpen to finish off the shutout, the Mariners' ninth of the season. A rough stretch for the Astros has coincided with the Mariners' surge. They might have added at the deadline too with their Carlos Correa reunion, but a 2-8 stretch in late July and early August opened the door for Seattle and they had to place All-Star closer Josh Hader on the IL with a shoulder strain Tuesday. With a month and a half left in the season, the AL West is shaping up as a dead spring between the division's standard-setter of the past decade and the upstart with the AL MVP favorite plus plenty more young talent. For now, Seattle can definitely say momentum is on its side.

Blue Jays midseason insights: All-Star aspirations, player extensions and ballpark plans

TORONTO — Toronto Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro leaned against the dugout railing, sliding in front of cameras and outstretched microphones ahead of the club's series opener against the Chicago Cubs. He lauded the team's progress this season, jumping from 74 wins to the top of the American League East, before discussing the business of the Blue Jays. From Shapiro's contract status to future Rogers Centre renovations, here are four notes from the president's midseason media session: Over the 2025 All-Star break, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred identified Toronto as a potential host city for a future Midsummer Classic. The Jays have requested to host the event, Shapiro confirmed Tuesday. Blue Jays business operations executive Marnie Starkman travelled to this year's All-Star Game in Atlanta to observe the event and talk with the commissioner's office. The Phillies are set to host the 2026 game, and the Cubs were recently announced as 2027 hosts. But 2028 and beyond remain open, with a decision expected soon. Advertisement 'All the feedback we're getting is positive,' Shapiro said. 'And I would hope that within the next six to eight months that there's clarity on that.' This year hasn't been particularly kind to the leaders of Toronto's premier sports franchises. The Maple Leafs announced team president Brendan Shanahan's contract would not be renewed in May. A month later, the Raptors parted ways with Masai Ujiri after 12 seasons. Shapiro is nearing the end of his current contract as Jays president and CEO, which is set to expire later this year. Though Shapiro declined to answer if he is actively negotiating with ownership on an extension, the president made his position clear. 'I want to remain here,' Shapiro said. 'And I can also say that both Edward (Rogers) and Tony (Staffieri) have been reciprocal in that desire.' In his 10th season leading the Jays, Shapiro has overseen major renovations at Rogers Centre and the team's player development complex in Florida. However, since making the American League Championship Series in his first season (2016), the team has yet to win a playoff game. Entering Tuesday's contest with 98.2 percent playoff odds, the Jays should have a chance to change that in October. Shapiro isn't the only one in a contract year. Manager John Schneider's deal expires at the end of the season. While Shapiro declined to comment on a managerial extension, deferring the question to general manager Ross Atkins, he raved about Schneider's improvements utilizing information and leading the club's big league staff and players. 'What I've seen in Schneids is just a guy who keeps getting better,' Shapiro said. 'I think that's in his nature.' Under Schneider, the Jays are 278-239 and on pace to make the postseason for a third time in four years. He's in contention to win the 2025 American League Manager of the Year award and could be a candidate for other jobs this offseason, if the Jays decline to extend. Due to mid-season firings, there could be at least four open managerial spots this winter. Advertisement But Schneider has only coached in the Jays' organization, starting as a low-level catching instructor in 2008. For a position like manager that's so predicated on relationships and organizational trust, he's likely more valuable to the Jays than any other franchise. On the active roster, the Jays have at least five pending free agents. None are more important than Bo Bichette, who's on pace to lead the AL in hits for a third time. Shapiro acknowledged interest in retaining Bichette, but largely danced around the question of the shortstop's future in Toronto, noting a late-season pennant race isn't the time to negotiate major deals. The Jays rarely sign extensions in the middle of seasons, though Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s $500 million contract earlier this year was a notable exception. 'I'm confident that at the right time we'll make an effort to [keep Bichette],' Shapiro said. After dumping nearly a half-billion dollars into Rogers Centre and Florida complex projects over the past decade, the Jays' renovations aren't entirely complete. They'll add another club in the 200 level behind home plate this offseason, Shapiro said, and other long-term stadium construction projects are in the works. 'Nothing as grand or as big as anything we've done,' Shapiro said. 'But there's still a lot of work to be done there.' Another major business project Shapiro could oversee, if extended, is the club's 50th anniversary season next year. There's certainly room for more names on Toronto's Level of Excellence or the first non-owner statue outside Rogers Centre, but Shapiro didn't reveal any anniversary plans. Arch Manning's Viral Venmo Payments: Are They Just Fake Jokes?

Arch Manning's Viral Venmo Payments: Are They Just Fake Jokes? originally appeared on The Spun. Arch Manning's alleged Venmo payments are going viral on social media on Tuesday, in the wake of a gambling conspiracy surrounding an Oklahoma Sooners quarterback, but are they real? Almost certainly not. On Tuesday, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was accused of betting on sports, after screenshots of a "sports gambling" payment made on his Venmo account went viral. However, the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback has denied ever betting on college football, saying his payment was simply an inside joke between friends as a teenager. "The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false," Mateer posted to X on Tuesday. "My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends. "I have never bet on sports. I understand the seriousness of the matter but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo descriptions suggest otherwise. I can assure my teammates, coaches, and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in any sports gambling." Oklahoma, meanwhile, is taking this seriously, saying the school "takes any allegations of gambling seriously and works closely with the NCAA in any situation of concern." However, the school said its "unaware of any NCAA investigation and has no reason to believe there is one pending." In the wake of Mateer's screenshots going viral, similar ones from Arch Manning have gone viral, as well. But they appear to be fake. Several alleged Venmo transactions from Arch Manning's account have gone viral on social media on Tuesday, but they are most certainly fake or just jokes. Fans are taking to social media to photoshop images in hopes of going viral, creating a similar controversy to the one featuring the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback. Manning, meanwhile, is simply focused on the 2025 season. Texas, ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP Poll top 25, is expected to contend at the top of the SEC. "It means everything," Manning said at SEC Media Days. "I mean, my family has played in SEC, I grew up going to SEC games wanting to be a part of it. So now getting to represent at SEC media day, it's kind of a dream. I know I haven't done anything in the SEC yet, but that's the goal." Manning has been hyped a lot, but he's trying to simply focus on the games. "It's weird," Manning told ESPN. "I really haven't deserved any of this, so just trying to play along and play ball." Manning and Texas are scheduled to take on No. 3 Ohio State in the first game of the year on Saturday, Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. E.T.
