Marta Steals Show As Brazil Win 9th Copa America In Extraordinary Final
After a heart-stopping 4-4 draw in the Copa America Femenina final in Quito, Ecuador, Brazil came through an equally dramatic penalty shoot-out, eventually winning 5-4 in sudden death.
In the tenth edition of the tournament, first held in 1991, it is now the ninth time that Brazil has triumphed. Since losing out to Argentina in 2006, they have now won an unprecedented fifth successive title. Four of those successes have come at the expense of Colombia, who have never come closer to their first title than last night.
With just two minutes remaining of regulation time, Chelsea's Mayra Ramirez gave Colombia the lead for the third occasion on the night, It seemed like the title of South American champions may have finally shifted. Yet, in the seventh minute of stoppage time, the eternal Marta, now 39 years of age, slammed home a stunning equaliser to take the match into extra time.
With her penalty in the semi-final against Uruguay, Marta had scored a goal for a 21st different calendar year. Now in extra time, she scored again to this time put Brazil on the brink of the title. With five minutes remaining Leicy Santos scored for Colombia to tie the game up again.
In the penalty shoot-out, like England a week earlier, Brazil missed first. However, Colombia then failed to score two of their spot kicks and the stage was set for Marta to win the Copa America with her penalty. Remarkably, she missed the opportunity and the shoot-out went on into sudden death.
After three more penalties were converted, Brighton's Jorelyn Carabalí was denied by Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena and the holders retained their title once more.
After the match, Marta, who has now scored 122 international goals, was awarded the trophy for the Player of the Tournament in what is almost certainly her last Copa America Femenina, although that has been said before.
On her missed penalty, she said after the game, "I asked God not to punish me so much. I entered the game as I was, was blessed with the equalizer, and then another. And then in the penalty shootout, I had the chance to close it out and missed. But I have these wonderful girls. I came back very shaken after the penalty kick, and they made me believe we would make it, that Lorena would save it."
Brazil's Amanda Gutierres had scored five goals earlier in the tournament but was not selected to start the final. She came off the bench to score Brazil's second equaliser which helped earn her the award as the competition's top goalscorer.
She believes 'a final like this is what women's soccer and the Copa América need. And now I'm realizing a dream of winning a title with the national team, a testament to Arthur Elias's work. I dedicate this to everyone who was part of the group and couldn't make it, to the entire coaching staff, and to all the Brazilians.'
As a result of reaching the final, both Brazil and Colombia will qualify automatically to represent South America in the 2028 Women's Football Tournamrnt at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. As South American champions, Brazil have also earned themselves the right to take on England once more in the ne new UEFA-CONMEBOL showpiece, the Finalissima.
England won the first edition in 2023, triumphing over Brazil at Wemble Stadium also after a penalty shoot-out. With the men's Finalissima between European champions Spain and South American champions Argentina still to be scheduled into the calendar, there are doubts however as to whether another edition will ever take place.

Tottenham player ratings vs Newcastle: Kevin Danso stands out as Brennan Johnson sends reminder
Tottenham ended their pre-season tour of Asia with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle in Seoul. On what will be Heung-min Son's final Tottenham appearance, his farewell dominated proceedings in what was a fairly uneventful game until James Maddison's injury. Tottenham started brightly and took an early lead through Brennan Johnson's deflected effort from outside the area. Despite their early energy, Tottenham were unable to capitalise and were pegged back when Harvey Barnes rifled a shot in off the post to bring Newcastle level. The second half saw a flurry of changes for both sides, with neither team able to find a winner, with Maddison being taken off on a stretcher overshadowing the final minutes. Tottenham remain unbeaten under Thomas Frank and end their pre-season preparations with a trip to Germany to face Bayern Munich. Antonin Kinsky 6 Even though Barnes' equaliser beat Kinsky at his near post, there was nothing he could do about the goal. Otherwise rarely called into action. Pedro Porro 6 Allowed Barnes to cut inside him far too easily for Newcastle's equaliser. Defensively, Porro is still vulnerable, but Frank will really appreciate his attacking qualities. The Spaniard is the perfect fit for his system. Kevin Danso 7 Thomas Frank loves his defenders to be aggressive and proactive. He'll have thoroughly enjoyed the way Danso won possession to turn the ball over for Tottenham's opening goal. He's by no means the finished article, but Danso will provide valuable cover for Romero and Van de Ven. Cristian Romero 6 A solid performance from Romero, who dealt well with Newcastle's physicality. Similarly to Danso, Frank will like how aggressive Romero is when attacking balls into the box and winning back possession high up the pitch. Ben Davies 6 Newcastle caused Davies problems down the left hand side but the Welshman recovered well and restricted the lively Anthony Gordon. Given Destiny Udogie's injury, Frank will be glad to be able to call upon Davies. Rodrigo Bentancur 5 Wasn't one of his best performances as Newcastle were able to cut through Tottenham's midfield fairly easily in the first-half. Archie Gray 6 Newcastle dominated the midfield battle after a bright start from Tottenham. Still, some more valuable minutes for Gray in his favoured position. Pape Matar Sarr 6 He wasn't quite able to emulate his goalscoring heroics from Thursday's 1-0 win over Arsenal as Newcastle got control of the midfield. Brennan Johnson 7 The Welshman opened the scoring with a deflected effort from outside the box but faded as the game wore on. Mobbed by Son following his goal, he will be expected to step up in the South Korean's absence. Mathys Tel 5 Tel is 20 years old, and it shows - all the confidence without the conviction. Plenty of energy and potential, but Frank needs to channel it into something more productive. Heung-Min Son 6 This afternoon was hardly ever going to be about Son's performance, and luckily so, as it was a pretty anonymous showing from the 33-year-old, who was routinely caught offside. Micky Van de Ven 6 The Dutchman looked assured as Newcastle struggled to create any meaningful chances. Wasn't tasked with too much, but when called upon he stood up to examination. Lucas Bergvall 6 There are a lot of questions to be answered in the middle of the park for Tottenham, but Bergvall can certainly be part of the solution. The young Swede tried to wrestle back control of the midfield, but struggled as the game hit a lull in the second-half. Richarlison 5 Tottenham lacked an out-and-out forward in the absence of Dominic Solanke and Richarlison did little to suggest he is the answer. The Brazilian struggled to lead the line, but he wasn't helped by a lack of service. Djed Spence 6 Newcastle had looked lively on both flanks early on but Spence got to grips with his position well and ensured Tottenham stayed resolute. Yves Bissouma 5 Couldn't turn the tide for Tottenham in the midfield despite an energetic performance. His performance was symptomatic of a lack of quality in the second-half. James Maddison 5 A really unfortunate way to end his pre-season as he was stretchered off injured in the 85th minute. The Englishman couldn't provide the spark to help Tottenham break out of pressure. A few nice touches, but he went missing in a physical affair. Mohammed Kudus 5 Struggled to impact the game off the bench. Crowded out in a suffocating midfield battle, there wasn't a lot of space for Kudus to work with. Wilson Odobert 5 A difficult cameo for the teenager, who like his team-mates couldn't find any rhythm in a stop-start game. Luka Vuskovic 6 Helped Tottenham see out the result with an industrious display. The young Croatian stood up to task without standing out. Yang min-hyeok n/a Had a late chance as he jigged his way into the area, but having replaced Maddison with just five minuted left to play, there wasn't enough time for the youngster to find his feet in the game.

Jared Verse explains what makes the Rams defensive line so special
The Los Angeles Rams have one of the best young defensive lines in the NFL. Jared Verse is the star, but the rest of the line features an eclectic group like Braden Fiske, Kobie Turner, Byron Young and the veteran Poona Ford. This unit (minus Ford, who only joined the Rams this offseason) combined for 28.5 sacks in 2024 and terrorized opposing offensive lines toward the end of the season. How did all four players accomplish this shared feat with just combined years of NFL experience? Verse says it's because all four have different traits that blend well together and that the whole group knows how to work off each other's strengths. 'Everybody has their own attributes, their own little things that make them a great rusher," Verse told CBS Sports last week. "Fiske is so twitchy, Kobie's so strong. BY's so fast. I'm just a really strong dude. We all have attributes of each other and when we're together, we excel. It's like when you're cooking, a bunch of stuff by itself ain't really good . But when you throw it together, it's the best thing you've ever had.' The one element they missed the most was run-stopping, though. Enter Ford, who is known as one of the best in the league. His inclusion in the defense line has been highly touted all offseason and his veteran leadership cannot be discounted, either. The Rams will need their ascending defensive line to anchor a defense that lacks firepower in the second and third levels. But with this group, they're on the right path. Report – Inter Milan Ready To Push For Atalanta Talisman After Transfer Request
Inter Milan are ready to push for the signing of Ademola Lookman after the player publicly demanded a transfer from Atalanta. This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews. They report that the Nerazzurri are not considering any Plan B or backup targets. In another bombshell in what has become a full-blown transfer soap opera, Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman made a public statement in which he handed in a transfer request. The 27-year-old accused his club of breaking a promise to sell him. He further described 'poor treatment' due to La Dea's refusals to sanction a transfer. This after Atalanta had rejected two offers from Inter to sign Lookman. The second of which reached €45 million including add-ons. Inter To Push For Ademola Lookman Signing After Public Transfer Request MILAN, ITALY – APRIL 20: Ademola Lookman of Atalanta BC looks on during the Serie A match between AC Milan and Atalanta BC at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on April 20, 2025 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by) Lookman's previous gesture of removing all mentions of Atalanta from his social media accounts was not exactly subtle. But the former RB Leipzig forward has now taken things to another level. Lookman is extremely publicly pushing to leave Atalanta. And according to Sky Sport Italia, this will embolden Inter to return to the table to try and seal a deal for Lookman. Despite the evident reluctance on the part of Atalanta. Sky note that there are a few names that have bounced around as potential alternatives to Lookman. Christopher Nkunku and Jadon Sancho among them. But the broadcaster report that Inter aren't really considering these at the moment. They're ready to go all-in to sign Lookman.
