MHA accords ‘Z' category of CRPF security cover to Delhi CM Rekha Gupta

NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), after a review, has decided to accord Z-category security cover of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, sources said on Thursday. The decision has come following an alleged attack on her during a public hearing named 'Jan Sunvai' on Wednesday, sources in the Ministry said. They added that the incident raised concerns about her safety, especially given the politically charged environment in the national capital. According to officials, the CRPF security personnel reached the Chief Minister's residence following the MHA decision to take charge of the responsibility from the Delhi police. Additional deployment has also been made in and around the CM's residence and office to ensure round-the-clock protection, they added.

NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday announced that she will hold public hearings not only at her residence but in every assembly constituency in Delhi. This came a day after Gupta was allegedly attacked during the weekly Jan Sunvai (public hearing) session at her Civil Lines house. In a social media post on X, Gupta said that the incident won't prevent her from fighting for the interests of Delhi's people. "When I was in college, my dad gave me a car to drive. One day, there was a major accident. I got scared and became afraid to even touch the car again. Then my dad said that accidents happen in life, but you mustn't stop out of fear. You can't give up walking on the road," the Delhi CM said. "Today, his same lesson comes back to me. Yesterday, another accident happened, but I can never stop fighting for the interests of Delhi's people. Every moment of my life and every fibre of my being is dedicated to Delhi. Despite all these unexpected blows, I will never abandon Delhi," she added. "Anyway, women have double the strength to fight through hardships. They have to face countless tests to prove themselves. I, too, am ready! Now, public hearings will not only take place at my home but in every assembly constituency in Delhi. According to the Delhi CMO, the attack appeared to be part of a 'well-planned conspiracy to kill her.' Gupta was taken to hospital for a medical examination following the incident. Police officials said the accused, identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Sakriya Khimjibhai from Rajkot, Gujarat, is currently in five-day police custody. The Delhi Police , along with the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Special Cell, are investigating the case from all possible angles. His phone is being examined by forensic experts, and police are scrutinising his social media accounts for any leads. An attempt-to-murder case under Sections 109(1), 132, and 221 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered against the accused. Police records show Khimjibhai has a criminal history and was previously booked in five cases, including a knife attack.

Delhi: A day after Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was 'slapped' by a man named Rajesh Khimji during the 'Jan Sunvai,' BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal, shared a photo of the CM. He had met Rekha Gupta at her residence in Delhi. Today, I met with the popular Chief Minister of Delhi, Mrs. @gupta_rekha ji, along with all my fellow MPs from Delhi and inquired about her well-being. The Chief Minister is completely healthy and, as before, is continuously engaged with dedication in the work of the people of Delhi," the BJP MP posted on X, along with the photo. During the 'Jan Sunvai' (public hearing) on Wednesday, August 20, sources said that the accused, Rajesh Khimji, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta some papers and then attacked her, reported PTI. Senior BJP leader Harish Khurana told NDTV that the attacker slapped the chief minister and also pulled her hair. Later in the day, Delhi Police took the accused into custody. Rajesh Khimji was booked on charges of 'attempt to murder' as per police officials. The accused is 41-years-old and a resident of Rajkot in Gujarat. Poeple at the Chief Minister's Office, privy of the incident, told Mint that the attacker handed over a piece of paper to Rekha Gupta, and 'started talking in a raised loud voice and also used expletives before slapping the CM.' The Central government accorded Z-category security cover of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to the Delhi CM after the incident. Following the meeting with Rekha Gupta, Union Minister Harsh Malhotra reassured the public that she is recovering well and will soon resume her official duties. He said, 'All of us came to inquire about Delhi CM Rekha Gupta's well-being. She is completely healthy now. She will get back to her schedule soon. Such incidents take place, but they will not affect her routine of meeting people,' reported ANI.
