New electric ferry praised as 'real step change'
Two-time Olympic sailing champion Iain Perry has said a new electric ferry for the Isle of Wight will be a "real step change". At a maritime industry event on the Isle of Wight, BBC South was invited onto a smaller, demonstration version of the craft as it made a short journey on the Solent. The new passenger ferry, with capacity for 150 people, is expected to begin crossings early next year. Fran Collins, CEO of Red Funnel, said she hoped the addition to the fleet would help the company move from a 35-minute to a 30-minute timetable. It comes after criticism from the prime minister, as well as Conservative MP for Isle of Wight East Joe Robertson. Robertson said passengers had faced "excessive ferry prices and bad services," while Keir Starmer said services for islanders had "simply not been good enough." Red Funnel had previously apologised for "any inconvenience", and said it had "faced some challenges" and not met its punctuality targets. Artemis Technologies, run by former Olympian Perry, are the company behind developing the new ferry. The electric crafts use hydrofoils - underwater wings that lift the vessel's hull out of the water as it moves, which the company claimed reduces drag and increases speed. "It's halfway between a plane and a boat," said Perry. "You get to a certain speed and it takes off and flies above the waves," he said. "It's going to be a real step change." Ms Collins said the new addition to the fleet was taken to help the company meet its decarbonisation targets and provide a faster service. "As an industry we need to decarbonise, and decarbonisation is something we can't do on our own... we have to do it in partnership," she added. Island vehicle ferry sailings disrupted
Passengers set to sail on a car ferry to and from the Isle of Wight are facing delays and cancellations. Red Funnel said the "technical issue" meant sailings between Southampton and East Cowes on the Isle of Wight were disrupted. Foot passengers are being advised to travel on the Southampton-West Cowes high-speed service which is unaffected. Passengers planning to travel on Monday are advised to check Red Funnel's timetable. On Saturday, passengers also faced disruption after vehicle ferry Red Eagle broke down, having just returned to service. A number of sailings were cancelled during the morning, with the ferry firm apologising for inconvenience to passengers. The Red Jet passenger-only crossing takes 28 minutes, the vehicle ferry about an hour. You can follow BBC Hampshire & Isle of Wight on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram. Ferry suffers 'technical issue' on return to sea
Ferry passengers were facing disruption on Saturday after a vessel broke down, having just returned to service. Red Funnel said its Red Eagle ferry, sailing between between East Cowes and Southampton, had suffered a "technical issue". The ferry had been delayed in returning to service after its annual refit. A number of sailings were cancelled during the morning, with the operator apologising for inconvenience to passengers. The ferry company also cancelled the 12:30 BST sailing from East Cowes and the 14:00 crossing from Southampton. The non-league football match between Sherborne Town and Cowes Sports, due to be played in Dorset, was cancelled as the Cowes club was "unable to make alternative travel arrangements", according to the Wessex League. Red Funnel had extended its winter timetable until 4 April due to Red Eagle's delayed return from its annual refit. It previously said it had been discovered, as the vessel was leaving dry dock, that it needed further work, meaning legally-required inspections had to be rearranged. Red Funnel has been contacted for further comment. You can follow BBC Hampshire & Isle of Wight on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram. Ferry disruption set to continue Red Funnel
