PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal has upheld the acquittal of a former headmaster accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old pupil seven years ago, ruling that doubts expressed by the lower courts about the boy's version of events were well-founded. A three-judge panel led by Justice Hashim Hamzah, who sat with Justices Zaini Mazlan and Hayati Akmal Abdul Aziz, dismissed the prosecution's final appeal against a High Court ruling which had cleared Zainuren Mohamed, 58, of the charge. The judges agreed that there was no error in the lower courts' findings, where both the sessions and High Court judges had noted serious gaps and contradictions in the case. Zainuren, originally charged with four counts of assault involving boys aged 11 to 14, was only tried on one count after prosecutors dropped the three other charges in 2021. He was acquitted by the sessions court in 2022, a decision affirmed by the High Court in July 2023. His lawyer, E Gnanasegaran, said the Court of Appeal affirmed all the key points made in the earlier rulings.
Advertisement 'Our submission and the Court of Appeal's findings show that the trial court was right to find the boy's story not credible. This was later confirmed by the High Court. 'There were material gaps between the boy's and his mother's evidence, and the court rightly found that the two teachers who testified were also not credible,' he said. Gnanasegaran said the contradictions in testimony, including from the boy who later said that no assault had taken place, raised real doubts over whether the incident ever occurred. In its appeal, the prosecution argued that the trial judge was wrong to treat the inconsistencies as material, saying they stemmed from long cross-examinations. The appellate court disagreed, ruling that the trial judge had taken care to ensure that the boy could give evidence comfortably. 'There was no misdirection by either court and (their rulings) were well within the facts adduced in court. Hence, we dismiss this appeal,' Hashim said in his ruling. Audrey Wee also appeared for Zainuren while deputy public prosecutor Eyu Ghim Siang appeared for the prosecution. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Armenia arrests archbishop over alleged coup plot

Archbishop of the Armenian Apostolic Church Bagrat Galstanyan, who is charged with attempting to overthrow the government and destabilizing the state, waves to supporters as Armenia's National Security officers arrive to arrest him in Yerevan, Armenia, June 25, 2025. Melik Baghdasaryan/Photolure via REUTERS LONDON (Reuters) -Armenian authorities on Wednesday arrested a prominent Christian cleric, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, along with 13 other people and charged them with orchestrating a plot to overthrow the government. In a statement, Armenia's Investigative Committee said it had filed criminal charges against Galstanyan and 15 others whom they said had "acquired the means and tools necessary to commit a terrorist attack and seize power". A total of 14 individuals have been arrested, investigators said, without naming the people. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wrote on his Telegram channel that the authorities had thwarted a "large and sinister plan by the 'criminal-oligarchic clergy'" to take power in Armenia, a former Soviet republic in the South Caucasus. Galstanyan's arrest is part of a growing confrontation between Pashinyan and the powerful Armenian Apostolic Church, who have traded increasingly bitter allegations in recent weeks ahead of elections scheduled for next year. Some senior clerics have previously called for Pashinyan to step down over Armenia's military defeats against Azerbaijan. Last week, Russian-Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan was detained on accusations of making public calls to usurp power after he accused the government of waging a campaign against the church and said he would act "in his own way" to stop it, according to state agency Armenpress. Lawyers for Karapetyan say the businessman denies wrongdoing. A lawyer for Galstanyan, Sergei Arutyunyan, told journalists on Wednesday that his client was being unfairly criminalised by the government, which he said was seeking to "create a smokescreen and simulate that they've caught a terrorist group." Pashinyan rose to power on a wave of street protests in 2018, but came under heavy domestic pressure after major losses to Azerbaijan in a brief war in 2020. In 2023, Azerbaijan retook the whole of the mountain enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, where ethnic Armenians had enjoyed de facto independence for decades. Tapping into popular anger over defeats and territorial concessions, Galstanyan and his supporters led days of street protests last summer to demand the removal of Pashinyan. Detailing the charges that he faces now, authorities alleged that Galstanyan and associates had recruited over 1,000 people, mainly former soldiers and police officers, to block roads, paralyse traffic, incite violence and shut off the internet, with the goal of destabilising the government and seizing power. The Investigative Committee published audio recordings purporting to show Galstanyan and others discussing plans for the alleged coup attempt, as well as a photograph showing firearms and other weapons they said were discovered during searches. Pashinyan, who faces parliamentary elections in June 2026, has moved towards signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan, although tensions between the two countries remain high and the number of reported ceasefire violations has surged this year. Spain's High Court upholds conviction of ex-soccer chief Rubiales' in kiss case

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Luis Rubiales faces examination during trial - National Court, Madrid, Spain - February 13, 2025 Luis Rubiales leaves the court REUTERS/Violeta Santos Moura MADRID (Reuters) -Spain's High Court on Wednesday upheld a verdict that found former soccer federation president Luis Rubiales guilty of sexual assault for an unsolicited kiss on the lips of national team player Jenni Hermoso at the 2023 World Cup in Sydney. The court rejected multiple appeals against the conviction, reaffirming Rubiales kissed Hermoso without her consent during the medal ceremony after Spain's women had won the trophy, according to the ruling seen by Reuters. Rubiales was fined over 10,000 euros ($11,592) and acquitted of coercion charges alongside three co-defendants. Prosecutors had sought a 2-1/2-year prison sentence and called for a retrial, both of which were dismissed. The incident sparked widespread debate about sexism in Spanish society and women's football, fueling momentum for the "Me Too" movement in the country. Rubiales argued that his actions were motivated by an uncontrollable joy, but the court ruled that his restraint with other players and attendees demonstrated he could have avoided such behaviour with Hermoso. "Since that emotion did not lead him to express his joy so effusively by kissing the other players or the accompanying persons in the box, and he restrained himself, he could also have done so, without too much effort, with the captain of the team," the court said.
