Cops probe fatal crash in Likas

By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Rescue workers loading the body into a police truck. – Photo by Jimmy Goh Kota Kinabalu: Police are investigating a tragic accident that resulted in the death of one child and left another seriously injured on Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen, near Teluk Likas at around 9.45am on Monday. The incident involved a Perodua Axia driven by a 55-year-old local man who collided with two girls, aged 12 and 7, as they were crossing the road. City Police Chief ACP Kasim Muda said the impact of the crash caused the death of one child at the scene, while the other suffered head injuries and is receiving medical attention at Likas Hospital. 'Her condition is reported to be stable. The driver was uninjured. Preliminary investigations suggest that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident. 'However, a toxicology sample has been taken for further analysis,' he said in a statement, adding that a case has been opened under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The police are urging witnesses to come forward with any information that could aid in the investigation.

Meanwhile, they are also investigating the discovery of a male body found floating in the sea near the Sunsite Bar area in Tanjung Aru. Police were alerted the same day of discovery by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) at 2.30pm. 'The body was recovered by the APM team and taken to the APM Tower in Tanjung Aru for further action. 'Police units, including members of MPV (KK16 & KK123) and the Kepayan Ridge Police Patrol Unit, were dispatched to the scene to conduct an initial investigation. 'Forensic officers from the Sabah Police Headquarters and the investigating officer were also notified and deployed to the site,' Kasim said. He said the body had been sent to the Forensic Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a post-mortem examination. MACC to challenge Syed Saddiq acquittal at Federal Court

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) in charge had informed him that there had been plans to take the case to the Federal Court regardless of today's outcome at the Court of Appeal. 'I was informed earlier by the prosecutor that they will be filing an appeal to the Federal Court,' he said in a press conference at MACC's headquarters here. 'The DPP informed me that if a different decision had been made, an appeal to the Federal Court would still have been pursued,' he added. When asked for his thoughts on the court's decision, Azam said he holds no personal feelings towards those involved in the cases he investigates. 'I do not feel disappointed or pleased when I investigate any case,' he said. A three-member Court of Appeal (CoA) panel led by Justice Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim said the decision was unanimous. Delivering the court's decision, Justice Noorin said that High Court Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid had erred in several decisions, and that there was no element of dishonesty when the former Youth and Sports Minister instructed his staff to remove money from Armada's bank accounts. Foreign fisherman nabbed in drug bust worth RM105,000

TAWAU: Police arrested a foreign fisherman and seized over three kilogrammes of syabu worth approximately RM105,000 in Indrasabah on Friday (June 20). The 30-year-old suspect, who tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, is believed to have acted as a drug transporter attempting to smuggle the narcotics abroad. District police chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the arrest was made around 3.30pm near the entrance to Indrasabah Fishing Paradise. The suspect reportedly tried to flee when approached and threw a grey bag to the ground before being apprehended.
