Williams still "cornered" with current F1 tools

Williams boss James Vowles has said that the Grove squad is still at a disadvantage with some of the tools it uses to design and develop its cars - one of the reasons why he feels the current FW47 is difficult to drive.

Vowles' tenure at the team has been underpinned by the restorative work he has directed investment in behind closed doors, with one famed example being the migration away from a central Excel spreadsheet used to track the car's build.
Further investment into more modern tooling and machinery has continued; Williams was one of the key advocates for a tiered capital expenditure limit to ensure F1's lower-placed teams could put more finance into bringing their facilities in line with the front runners.
Motorsport.com understands that Williams does not expect the full impact of the new infrastructure to be realised until the build of its 2028 car, although the improvements have continued to escalate as the team becomes acquainted with the new internal systems.
"I would say we have some characteristics in the car that are still not at the right level," Vowles explained.

"I don't think we have the balance that we should do for the drivers, and we're a little bit cornered on some of the tools that we're using at the moment.
"I think there's some elements that we can bring in line this year, but I think some of it, however, is actually a different direction that we need to take for the future."

Vowles offered an update on the improvements taking place at Williams, which involves not only the infrastructural investments but also changing the culture at the team to ensure a more collaborative process in the development of the car.

He says that the management systems that he has implemented have required a lengthy process of adaptation, particularly as any off-the-shelf solutions are not F1 specific.
But, he thinks that adapting those systems to produce a target output measured in lap time is bringing the Williams personnel to improve.
"I think it is where I expected the continuation of the development path to be, just by fixing some fundamental bits,' Vowles added.
'Really, the secret behind this is just getting people to talk together and a little bit of infrastructure that allows you to actually work a little bit more efficiently as well.

"What I'm pleased by is that this direction of travel should continue on with a little bit more plus-plus into 2026.

"It's hard for fans as well to understand why we're doing this, but our targets are actually around introduction of infrastructure, technology, systems, KPIs internally, how long it takes to build a front wing, how expensive it is to build a front wing, how much we do internally, externally, how long it takes to design, how many loops we do, how many wind tunnel hours it takes to add X performance.
"Those are all the KPIs that then drive you towards championship material. And the results on track are just an output from it, and that's why I'm not focused on the results on track because as with '25 and I think as with '26, it'll move forward.

"This is data-driven; if you keep changing these variables, you will just build a faster and faster car every year and eventually you outdo your competitors.
"The cultural change is absolutely enormous because you've got to work with a very different set of people, and that brings organisations to a standstill. It's not that I'm saying anything more than that change was big. It'll be big for any organisation in the world.
"However, here's how you get the milliseconds out of it. You have KPIs: how many milliseconds per week are we producing both aerodynamically or vehicle dynamics or through simulation?
"Those are the same ones that drive you forward. It's just instead of targeting 10 milliseconds a week, you're targeting 15 in order to be championship material.

'Once you've got the right data wrapped around it, with the right tools wrapped around it and the right communication, you can effectively turn up the dial without being blase about it to a certain extent."

The San Francisco 49ers began mandatory minicamp Tuesday, and to no surprise, left tackle superstar Trent Williams was a full participant. Advertisement Some rumors swirled after Williams was absent from the team workouts earlier this offseason, but the veteran lineman attended the last couple days of OTAs to quiet the noise. He is under contract, a proven leader in the locker room, and is reportedly in good health, so there shouldn't be much to worry about. He hardly comes to OTAs anyway, so an appearance - however late - is actually some nice progress. One thing that could worry Niners Nation, however, is Williams' longevity at such a crucial position like his. The two have had tremendous success thus far, but Williams won't be able to protect quarterback Brock Purdy's blindside for his entire career- which after the QB's big-time contract extension, many believe will remain in the Bay Area. Williams, who will turn 37 next month, is entering his 15th NFL season. For the average player, this is multiple lifetimes. Even for a future Hall of Famer like Williams is, 15 years is quite a while. Not to mention that offensive line is among the toughest places to play because of the physical demand... Trent is a veteran's veteran to say the least. Advertisement Still, his play hasn't slowed down, with three First Team All-Pros in the last four years as proof. But Father Time is speeding up. So, what does Williams have to say about this eventual twilight of his career? Not much. 'I just feel like I do myself and my teammates a disservice if I'm looking toward the end,' Williams said, via 'I'm paid. People count on me to be here now. We've got goals and aspirations as a team. I just don't think putting brain power toward that helps us get to where we want to go." For the 49ers, "where they want to go" looks a lot different than where they ended up last season. San Francisco fell to the bottom of the NFC West the season after a Super Bowl appearance. Williams himself only appeared in 10 games, which matches a career-low. Advertisement There are a lot of things to improve on in 2025, so Williams' retirement has been pushed far back in the closet of his mind. 'When [retirement] happens, it happens," he said. "I think, one day, coming in, I should know when it's getting that time, and then, I do the responsible thing and let them know early enough so that they can make the adjustments needed.' That day is unknown at the moment, but what we do know is that Williams is under contract for two more seasons, including this upcoming one. After 2026, he will be going on 39 years old. 40, at least right now, could be within reach. 'I would love to make it into that special group, but if it's not in my cards,' he said. 'I'm going to do everything physically possible. I'm going to stay engaged. Advertisement 'It's one of them things to where I'm going to do everything possible to play as long [as I can], and to put a good product of football out there, and then, when it's not going my way, then I'll know. But I could play until I'm 41. Who knows?" Best news of all for 49ers fans? He's fueled up with motivation. "I'm definitely not going to retire with some left in the tank." Trent Williams wants to go "until the wheels fall off". And there are a lot of miles left in those tires. Increasingly, payers and employers are leveraging the latest trends in data analytics and cutting-edge technologies to help better address challenges in health care. In fact, 67% of employers said they already have a strategy in place to collect, store and analyze data that can lead to meaningful improvements in employee health and well-being. In the past, an imperfect and often complicated health care system, along with rising costs, impacted consumers' ability to easily access care. Nearly 11% of U.S. adults avoided health care due to costs in the previous year, in fact, according to a new report from America's Health Rankings. The use of data and analytics in health benefits has expanded in recent years from helping provide actionable insights to powering the development of innovative products and capabilities that create simpler, more personalized health care experiences. 'We made over 400 enhancements to our digital experience last year and plan to deliver a similar number through 2025,' said Amy Jordan, vice president of product with UnitedHealthcare's commercial business. 'UnitedHealthcare's newest innovation, our Smart Choice provider search capability, empowers members to more easily find and connect with quality network providers from the palm of their hand.' expand Available to eligible UnitedHealthcare commercial members in the member app and website, Smart Choice provides results that meet member preferences and maximize member benefits, which may result in easier access and lower costs. When members use the UnitedHealthcare app or to search for providers, they will see Smart Choice results based on multiple factors, including a member's personal preferences and health plan benefits as well as nationally recognized standards* for safe and effective quality care, according to Jordan. 'This is just one way we are putting data and innovation to work as part of a broader goal aimed at reducing heath care expenditures, improving outcomes and creating better member experiences,' Jordan said. A data revolution: From PDFs to artificial intelligence In recent years, the ability to access, analyze and use data to shape the future of health care innovations and insights has changed significantly. 'My first couple weeks on the job, I was literally taking printed PDF reports and typing numbers into Excel files to bring the story of data to life. That was two decades ago,' says Craig Kurtzweil, chief data and analytics officer for UnitedHealthcare's commercial business. 'Back then, it was a challenge to even access the data, let alone to translate it and visualize it in a way that an employer could understand.' Data is now foundational to the health care industry and a cornerstone of its innovation: Members are using data-driven tools like UnitedHealthcare's Smart Choice capability to more easily connect with quality network providers and make more informed care decisions Employers are using population data to build employee engagement strategies to help better address certain health needs for specific groups of employees Physicians and other health care professionals are using nearly real-time data to help improve the care delivery experience with members 'In the past, you had data, but it could take months to get your hands on it.' Kurtzweil says. 'Now there is a flood of data — insightful and valuable data — but it's become increasingly apparent that responsible AI and ML strategies can help translate that ocean of data into actionable insights.' Turning insight into action for employers and employees When Kurtzweil and his team meet with employer groups about their health plan performance today, the conversation goes well beyond volume-based discussions and top-line results. Kurtzweil and team once informed a particular employer with an over 77,000-member population that 42% of their employees had complex conditions, including cancer. As a result of this analysis, the employer deployed a cancer-specific care management team to better support those members, resulting in over $267,000 in savings to those employees by closing 105 gaps in care. 'We can now collect that data, integrate that data and apply those responsible and fair algorithms and machine learning to it in order to uncover trends within employer populations and gain actionable insights for them,' Kurtzweil says. AI and ML: balancing innovation with responsibility As more data is captured via overall engagement with the health system, artificial intelligence and machine learning can help sort that data. In fact, the global health care AI market is predicted to reach $614 billion by 2034, up from $27 billion in 2024, and 92% of surveyed employers said they believe that artificial intelligence (AI) holds promise in health care. These technologies assist in innovation at UnitedHealth Group — within Optum and UnitedHealthcare — helping make sense of 2 trillion health transactions annually. [2] While safety, privacy, transparency and responsible use are at the forefront of using AI and ML, timeliness, simplicity and efficiency are also key drivers. Yet no matter how fast or efficient the data is captured, reliable human analysis remains critical and necessary. 'While AI and ML may be important tools in health care as we move forward, developing and implementing it responsibly — and ensuring that the privacy and security of member health data is protected — is essential,' Kurtzweil said. Ferrari's Formula One fortunes may be flagging but the Italian constructor start this weekend's Le Mans 24 Hour Race as favourites targeting a third consecutive triumph in motorsport's fabled endurance classic. Roger Federer is acting as celebrity starter with the tennis icon getting the 93rd edition of the jewel in four-wheeled endurance racing's crown underway at 1600 local time (1400GMT) on Saturday. Advertisement Twenty-four hours later, through daylight, darkness and dawn, the 21 elite Hypercars will battle it out over 300 laps (4,000 kilometres plus) in front of a sell-out 320,000 crowd burning the midnight oil with copious quantities of coffee and beer. Ferrari made a triumphant return after a 50 year absence to land Le Mans' centenary race in 2023, repeating the feat last year. The Prancing Horse stable ended Toyota's run of five consecutive wins from 2018 to 2022 with the Japanese manufacturer out to reclaim their crown 40 years after their first Le Mans appearance. A shake-up in the regulations for 2023 sparked fresh interest in the premier class and this year Ferrari, Toyota and Porsche face challenges from Aston Martin, Cadillac, BMW, Alpine, and Peugeot. Advertisement Ferrari's position as the team to beat is bolstered by their bright start to the season, reeling off wins in the first three world endurance races in Qatar, Imola and Belgium. But Antonio Fuoco, who took the chequered flag 12 months ago along with Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen, is taking nothing for granted. "Compared to last year, everyone is closer to the other, it's going to be a tough battle," forecast the 29-year-old Italian driver. Ferrari team manager Batti Pregliasco is wary of the threat posed by Toyota. "The idea of winning a third Le Mans in a row would be magnificent," he said.
