Roy Jones Jr offers to help coach UFC star ahead of historic world title fight

Jones Jr - who has great experience coaching the biggest names in boxing - has offered to help training a UFC fighter just weeks before their world title fight
Boxing icon Roy Jones Jr has unexpectedly offered to coach Ilia Topuria in the run-up to his lightweight title showdown against Charles Oliveira.
Topuria, a former UFC featherweight champion, is set to face off against the Brazilian for the vacant 155lb title on 28 June at UFC 317. This follows shortly after Islam Makhachev relinquished the belt to move up to welterweight, with an immediate title shot against Jack Della Maddalena expected later this year.

Oliveira is aiming to reclaim the lightweight championship after losing it to Makhachev in 2022. Meanwhile, Topuria, the Spaniard-Georgian claimed the featherweight title after defeating Alexander Volkanovski last year and successfully defended it with a victory over Max Holloway.

Known as 'El Matador', Topuria was initially recognised for his formidable skills on the mat during his rise through the ranks. However, in recent years, his striking ability has significantly improved, earning him recognition as one of the sport's top strikers. With only weeks remaining until his match against Oliveira, Jones Jr has offered to assist the 28-year-old in sharpening his tools.
In an interview with Prime Casino, the boxing icon said: "I would make a lot of difference [to Ilia Topuria's camp for Charles Oliveira] because I teach how to get the most out of the striking, how to stay set while you're doing it. Because in MMA you gotta always be set because guys can take your legs out, but the way I fight you always stay set, so I think what I teach would be advantageous to anybody who chose to indulge in it and get what I really teach."
The 56-year-old boxing veteran - who last stepped into the ring in 2023 - added: "Roy understands the mechanics of all boxing, all fighting, not just boxing, all arts of fighting. Roy understands the mechanics of MMA totally well and totally understands what's necessary and what's not necessary to make you a better fighter."
With the eagerly anticipated clash on the around the corner, Ilia Topuria has shocked the MMA world by parting ways with his lifelong coaches, Agustin and Jorge Climent. The Climent brothers run the renowned Climent Club in Alicante, Spain, where 'El Matador' and his sibling Aleksandre Topuria had trained during their early days in MMA.
Following his featherweight championship victory last year, Topuria took the significant step of relocating from Alicante to Madrid. There appears to have been a split in the training camp of the former featherweight champion, as "both sides live in different cities, and their multiple professional projects prevent them from collaborating as they once did," according to a MARCA report.
Expressing his gratitude for the support over the years, Topuria extended his thanks: "We thank them for all these years of mutual learning and growth, and they wholeheartedly wish them all the best in all their projects." As he gears up for the bout with his Brazilian opponent, Topuria is expected to have a team that includes his brother, Aleksandre, Jesus Gallo, Javi Climent – who is not connected to the Climent brothers – Mani Tavanaei, and Mathias Ribeiro.

£18m Chelsea midfielder makes feelings clear after Arsenal transfer approach

Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos insists he 'loves' the Blues and is desperate to make it at Stamford Bridge after emerging as a shock transfer target for Arsenal. The Gunners have reportedly expressed interest in signing Santos following his impressive season at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. Santos, 21, was one of the most influential midfielders in the French top-flight last season, scoring ten goals and providing three assists. Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain and Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in Santos, who Chelsea signed back in January 2023. Chelsea spent £18m to poach Santos from Brazilian side Vasco da Gama but the talented midfielder is still yet to make his first-team debut for the Blues. Santos was sent on loan to Nottingham Forest last season before spending 18 months at Chelsea's sister club Strasbourg. Chelsea are reportedly open to selling Santos – though they value the youngster at a steep £50m – but the player himself says his 'desire' is to become a key player for the Premier League club. Following the conclusion of his loan spell in France, Santos could be included in Chelsea's squad for the upcoming Club World Cup. 'The only conversation I had was that I would play in the Club World Cup for Chelsea and after that we'll see what happens,' Santos told the Daily Mail. 'Everyone knows about my love, my desire to play for Chelsea. I think Enzo Maresca was very sincere with me, and I liked that sincerity. 'Also, when you look someone in the eye, when you're sincere, you build trust with the player. 'So I accepted that and went to Strasbourg to get minutes. And now, God willing, we'll see how it goes at the Club World Cup. I hope everything goes well.' Santos described his early struggles at Chelsea and Nottingham Forest as 'very difficult' and discussed how he turned things around at Strasbourg, also owned by Todd Boehly's BlueCo consortium 'It was a very difficult moment in my career – the beginning at Chelsea, with loans and no games at Forest, especially because I was very young,' he added. 'I was always ready to train, always fit to play, but unfortunately, I didn't get an opportunity there with the coach at Forest. 'But I never stopped working and I was sure that when the opportunity arose, which it did here at Strasbourg, I would be ready. 'I think the period I spent at Forest, learning and adapting, was fundamental for me to arrive here ready, to arrive here more experienced, let's say, despite how young I am. 'And of course, the mindset changes. I came with a staff, I came with a physical trainer, a cook, a nutritionist too. So I think every detail makes a big difference in football. 'The affection from Chelsea fans is something very special as well. Ever since the news broke that I was going to Chelsea, they started sending me a lot of messages. 'Back when I was at Vasco, too. And I had the spell at Nottingham, where I didn't play, but they sent me messages there too, I'd see some posts, they'd tag me on Instagram and Twitter. More Trending 'But I think during this spell at Strasbourg, they watched more. And since I played well, I think they're very anxious to see me playing for Chelsea, just as I'm very anxious to play there.' Chelsea co-owner Boehly appears to be a fan of Santos, recently hailing him as a 'really exciting' player. 'We're going to the Club World Cup so, right now, we're laser-focused on the Club World Cup,' Boehly said. 'We have some players that are joining us for the Club World Cup that weren't on the team. 'Andrey Santos is coming from Strasbourg. We're really excited about him and what we think he can add to the squad.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Captain Harry Kane and his men watched on as Oscar Piastri pipped Lando Norris in Barcelona. There were 52,115 in attendance at Wembley as Oldham scored twice in two minutes in extra time to beat Southend 3-2 in the National League play-off final and secure promotion to League Two. But James Norwood and Kian Harratt struck to help Oldham follow Barnet into the English Football League. With Mark Flekken set to move to Bayer Leverkusen, Brentford have turned to Kelleher. A reported initial fee of £12.5m for the second-choice Liverpool goalkeeper can rise to £18m if performance-related requirements are met. Republic of Ireland international Kelleher, who has a year left on his contract at Anfield, played over a quarter of the champions' Premier League matches this season when first-choice Alisson Becker was injured.
