aranasi: The head of the Telugu department in faculty of arts, BHU, professor Challa Sriramachandra Murthy was attacked by two motorcycle-borne miscreants on Monday evening.
The miscreants attacked him with an iron rod between the Bhojpuri Studies Center and Birla Hostel crossing on the campus fracturing his hands. They also took away his motorcycle.
As Murthy has denied having enmity with anyone, police suspect that he was targeted due to mistaken identity.
Angered over the incident, BHU teachers carried out a protest march on Tuesday evening.
Inspector Lanka, Raj Kumar Sharma, said on Tuesday that the assailants were being identified with the help of CCTV footage.
It is expected that both the assailants will be arrested soon, he said, adding that the actual cause of attacking Murthy will become clear only after their arrest. Murthy was returning after completing his work around 6.30pm on Monday. As soon as he moved from the Bhojpuri Studies Center towards Birla Crossroad, two youths followed him on their bike.
Before he could comprehend the situation, one of the youths hit his right arm with an iron rod.
They then stopped the motorcycle and hit his left arm also.
Folloing the attack, Murthy fell down shouting for help. Hearing his cries, some students ran towards him, however, the assailants fled. Later, deputy chief proctor prof Fateh Bahadur Singh and the BHU police outpost in-charge reached the spot and took Murthy to Trauma Centre. Police have started checking CCTV footage to identify the assailants. In protest against the incident, a group of teachers took out a protest march up to the BHU gate at Lanka on Tuesday evening.
