His brother is at IU. But Center Grove DE Kobe Cherry to forge own path at Purdue

Picture this: Old Oaken Bucket game, two or three years from now. Purdue defensive end Kobe Cherry comes off the corner from his defensive end position and gets to the quarterback.
What does Kobe do if that quarterback is his brother, Tyler Cherry? Sack him, of course.
'Absolutely,' Kobe Cherry said. 'We are both working incredibly hard and taking the correct steps to find ourselves out on the field in that Big Ten matchup.'
Kobe, a 6-5, 275-pound senior defensive lineman at Center Grove, announced his commitment to Purdue on Monday night, picking the Boilermakers over his other finalists — IU and Wisconsin. Choosing Purdue meant going to the rival school of his brother, Tyler, a former star quarterback at Center Grove, who will serve as a student coach for the upcoming season as he recovers from a knee injury.
Despite the IU-Purdue rivalry, Kobe said Tyler was 100% behind his decision.
'Tyler is more than unbelievably proud of me and the decision I've made,' Kobe said. 'He has been through it himself and he knows that I look up to him so he couldn't be more proud and excited to see where the future takes me. Tyler's advice to me was that the hard work and dedication does not stop here. It is an unbelievable accomplishment, but I have to keep my head straight and keep grinding.'
Cherry quickly rose in the recruiting rankings with a breakout sophomore season that saw him make 70 tackles and three sacks. He picked up an offer from IU after the season, and later adding offers from Louisville, Minnesota, Toledo, Wisconsin, Western Michigan and Purdue. But after suffering a knee injury, Cherry missed his entire junior football season.
Missing that time has made Cherry even hungrier for his senior year.
'I trusted the plan that God has laid out for me and put my situation in his hands,' Cherry said. 'My goals for my senior year are to lead my team to another state championship for Center Grove and show why I am a top defensive player in the country after missing last season.'
Cherry said he plans to graduate early and enroll at Purdue in January. That means missing his senior year of baseball, a sport where he also excels. In three seasons as a pitcher for the Trojans, he posted a 12-2 record with 2.37 earned run average.
'Baseball was always a love for me,' he said. 'Same with football. But as my body grew and developed, I found myself falling in love with football more and more every day and now am in the best situation I could have possibly asked for.'
That situation makes Cherry part of the current 18-player high school recruiting class for new Purdue coach Barry Odom. Other in-state recruits in the class are Lawrence Central three-star offensive linemen James Williams Jr. and Brock Brownfield of New Palestine.
Cherry said defensive line coach Kelvin Green, defensive ends coach Jake Trump and defensive analyst Daryl Lydon were all key contacts for him in his recruitment.
'If I was going to be in contact with one, I was going to be in contact with all of them,' Cherry said. 'That's how their brotherhood works. Extremely close. But overall, it's all about the people and Purdue has the best people to build a football program around.'
Green told Cherry he likes versatility in his defensive linemen. Cherry fits the bill.
'He likes his defensive linemen to know the playbook and be able to play every position across the defensive line,' he said. 'And he sees me doing that.'
The objective now for Cherry: Get ready for a big senior season. And help recruit more Boilermakers.
'Coach Odom spoke about using me to recruit,' Cherry said. 'I am open to using (my profile) to add some Boilermakers in the upcoming years.'

College football season kicks off with thrilling matchups and high stakes

After a long and busy season for college athletics, the football season arrives with a host of tantalizing angles. A look at some of the big games among the top teams, what's at stake and the hurdles that must be cleared on the way to the national championship. When does college football start? A handful of games kick off the season Aug. 23, with the most intriguing a Big 12 matchup between No. 22 Iowa State and No. 17 Kansas State that will take place in Dublin, Ireland. Both teams are considered contenders in their wide-open conference. Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson threw for a school-record 25 touchdowns last season and ran for seven more. Iowa State played in the conference title game last year. The following weekend has some doozies: No. 9 LSU faces No. 4 Clemson, No. 6 Notre Dame visits No. 10 Miami and defending champion No. 3 Ohio State hosts No. 1 Texas. Before the College Football Playoff expanded to 12 teams last year, a game like that might have been make or break. Now, teams have second chances and can afford three (maybe four) losses and still get in. Who are the favorites? The AP Top 25 and the coaches poll both list Texas as the preseason No. 1 team and the Longhorns are currently the favorite (plus-450, or 9-2 odds) to win the national championship, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Ohio State is right behind them (plus-525), followed by No. 5 Georgia and No. 2 Penn State (both 7-1) and then Clemson and No. 7 Oregon (both 9-1). Key games to watch Preseason No. 7 Oregon visits No. 2 Penn State on Sept. 27 in a rematch of last season's Big Ten title game. Penn State also has a game against Ohio State on Nov. 1. .... Speaking of the Buckeyes, the national title helped them get over their fourth straight loss to preseason No. 14 Michigan. That rematch is in its usual spot, Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 29 at the Big House. ... TCU at North Carolina (Bill Belichick's coaching debut) on Sept. 1 ... Oklahoma vs. Texas on Oct. 11 ... USC at No. 6 Notre Dame on Oct. 18 ... LSU at No. 8 Alabama on Nov. 8 ... No. 11 Arizona State at Colorado on Nov. 22. The 12-team playoff The College Football Playoff remains at 12 teams this year with one significant tweak: Unlike last year, conference champions will not be guaranteed a bye in the first round. But the best five conference champions are still guaranteed spots in the tournament. Seeds 5-8 will host first-round games against 9-12 on Dec. 19 (one game) and Dec. 20 (three games). The quarterfinals will be at the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 1, then at the Orange, Rose and Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. The semifinals will be Jan. 8 at the Fiesta Bowl and Jan. 9 at the Peach Bowl. The title game will take place at Hard Rock Stadium outside of Miami on Jan. 19. Heisman watch Keep in mind that last year's winner, Travis Hunter, didn't show up in the watch list in this very space last year. With that said, the early favorites include quarterbacks Arch Manning (Texas), Garrett Nussmeier (LSU) and Cade Klubnik (Clemson), along with Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith and, for those looking for a longshot, Alabama receiver Ryan Williams.

Penn State names team captains for 2025 season

Much has been made about Penn State's team leaders helping to create the winning culture of the program. As the Nittany Lions prepare for the start of a highly anticipated 2025 season, the official team leaders for this year's roster have been formally announced. Penn State announced the team captains for this year's season with five players set to lead the team this fall. Quarterback Drew Allar, defensive tackle Zane Durant, linebacker Dominic DeLuca, offensive lineman Nick Dawkins, and long snapper Tyler Duzansky were each named a team captain for the 2025 Nittany Lions. Allar, Dawkins, and DeLuca were each named captains for the 2024 season as well. This is the third straight season DeLuca will serve as a team captain. Penn State is coming off a season with an 11-1 regular season record and an appearance in the Big Ten championship game. The Nittany Lions were seeded in the College Football Playoff and won a home game against SMU in the first round and then defeated Mountain West Conference champion Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl before losing to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinal in the Orange Bowl. Penn State was ranked third in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll and second in the preseason AP Top 25. Many of the early bowl projections for the upcoming season predict another deep playoff run for Penn State, with a spot in the Rose Bowl a common preseason prediction to start the playoff. Penn State's season kicks off with a home game against Nevada on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. You can see the full Penn State schedule here. Iowa Hawkeyes QB Earns Surprising Comparison to Former Ohio State Star

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Iowa Hawkeyes and head coach Kirk Ferentz are heading into the 2025 college football season with big hopes. After a disappointing 2024 season, the Hawkeyes put in a lot of work to improve during the offseason. Making a big leap at the quarterback position was an obvious need. Iowa made two moves to help make that happen. Both Mark Gronowski and Hank Brown were brought in to be the new No. 1 and No. 2 quarterbacks on the roster. Gronowski seems likely to start, but Brown has been showing great flashes so far early in the year. Quarterback Mark Gronowski #11 of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits throws an incomplete pass against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the fourth quarter at Boone Pickens Stadium on August 31, 2024 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Photo byMaking the move from South Dakota State, Gronowski is not a name that most national fans will recognize. However, his game should elevate the Hawkeyes' passing offense in a big way from what it was last season. Read more: Penn State QB Drew Allar Put on Notice in Concerning Outlook During the 2024 college season with the Jackrabbits, Gronowski completed 60.9 percent of his pass attempts for 2,721 yards, 23 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also ran for 380 yards and 10 touchdowns. Back in the 2023 season, his numbers were even bigger. He threw for 3,058 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, while running for 402 yards and eight scores. With that being said, Gronowski has received an interesting comparison before his first year with Iowa. Former Michigan tight end and current Big Ten Network analyst Jake Butt spoke out with his thoughts about Gronowski. He seems a comparison between the Hawkeyes' new quarterback and former Ohio State Buckeyes star signal caller JT Barrett. "Gronowski is clearly the most talented QB they've had. He throws a nice ball as well, but feels more like a JT Barrett comp from my playing days. JT was never the most talented throwing but would get you five when you needed four. He was a playmaker and leader. That's the role I see Gronowski playing," Butt said. That is a very interesting comparison for the Iowa starting quarterback. While they aren't expected to win the Big Ten, they should take a big step in the right direction from last season. Ferentz and company will open up the 2025 season with a matchup at home against the UAlbany Great Danes on August 30. After that, they will face a big test on the road against the currently No. 22 ranked Iowa State Cyclones on September 6. For more on the Iowa Hawkeyes and college football, head to Newsweek Sports.
