With injuries piling up, Fever sign guard who scored 33 vs. IUWBB in NCAA tournament

With injuries piling up to its backcourt, the Indiana Fever signed Aari McDonald via emergency hardship waiver.
Caitlin Clark is out until at least June 9 with a quadriceps strain, while Sophie Cunningham and Sydney Colson picked up injuries in the Fever's loss to Connecticut on Friday. That left the Fever with no true point guards and just two healthy guards: Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull.
The WNBA emergency hardship exception allows any team to sign a player, with immediate effect, if a team drops below 10 game-eligible players at any time. The Fever were down to eight healthy players due to the injuries, but also because they opened the season with one roster spot open because of salary cap restrictions.
McDonald has averaged 8.6 points, 2.8 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game over her four-year WNBA career. She played the 2024 season with Los Angeles and was drafted No. 3 overall by Atlanta in 2021. McDonald played for the Perth Lynx in Australia and led the league in scoring in 2023-24. The 2021 Pac-12 Player of the Year out of Arizona, she scored 33 points in the Wildcats' Elite Eight win over IU in the 2021 NCAA tournament.
The Fever host Washington on Tuesday, and McDonald will be eligible to play against the Mystics.
'We're down in numbers, but we're looking at adding another player, a replacement player, to help us with our numbers, and we'll try to get people healthy and try to get back to a full roster together,' Fever president Kelly Krauskopf said Sunday. 'I mean, games are still coming, so it's gonna be an adjustment, but we have a good group, and we have good depth, thankfully.'
Cunningham and Colson's MRIs were encouraging, and coach Stephanie White said they are 'day to day.' Neither participated in practice Sunday, but Colson was on the stationary bike during it and put up some shots after. Cunningham didn't practice at any portion, wearing slides as she came up to the court after practice was over.

David Greenwood, former UCLA star and NBA champion, dies at 68 after cancer battle

Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — David Greenwood, who was one of coach John Wooden's last recruits at UCLA and went on to win an NBA championship with Detroit during a 12-year pro career, has died. He was 68. Greenwood died Sunday in Riverside, California, after battling cancer, the school said Wednesday, citing family members. After a standout career at Verbum Dei High in Los Angeles, Greenwood began his college career at UCLA just months after Wooden's surprise retirement announcement in March 1975. He averaged 14.8 points and 8.7 rebounds in 118 games as a four-year starter in Westwood. The Bruins had a record of 102-17 and won the league title in each of his four seasons. He was a two-time league player of the year who helped the Bruins to the 1976 Final Four. Greenwood earned first-team All-America honors as a junior and senior, becoming UCLA's first player to do so since Bill Walton in 1972-74. He still ranks fourth on the school's career rebounding list. He was the second overall pick in the 1979 NBA draft. The Chicago Bulls lost the coin toss to the Los Angeles Lakers, who drafted future Hall of Famer Magic Johnson at No. 1, having acquired the pick in a trade with New Orleans. Before Michael Jordan arrived in Chicago in 1984, Greenwood, Reggie Theus and Orlando Woolridge were the Bulls' core players. After six seasons, the Bulls traded Greenwood in 1985 to San Antonio in exchange for future Hall of Famer George Gervin. Greenwood also played for San Antonio, Denver and Detroit, coming off the bench to help the Pistons beat Portland to win the 1990 NBA championship. He was a member of the Pac-12 Hall of Honor and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. Last year, Greenwood attended UCLA's final Pac-12 Conference game at Pauley Pavilion. Greenwood later coached at his high school alma mater, leading Verbum Dei to state titles in 1998 and 1999. He is survived by son Jemil and daughter Tiffany as well as his brother Al, sister Laverne and former wife Joyce. ___ AP college basketball: recommended

Caitlin Clark Turns Heads With Outfit Before Dream-Fever Rematch

On Thursday, May 22, 2025, the Indiana Fever will face off against the Atlanta Dream in a rematch of their bout from May 20, 2025, when the Dream won 91-90 in an instant classic. Ahead of tonight's showdown, Fever star Caitlin Clark was asked if Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce and billionaire musician Taylor Swift would be joining any Fever games. "Oh, gosh. I don't know. I mean, I hope so. They're on a nice 'in-vacation mode' right now. So, I hope they enjoy a nice little break out of the spotlight. But, I'm sure they'll be cheering for the Fever either way," Clark said at the time. Advertisement Her comments came not long after she raved about meeting Swift at a Chiefs playoff game earlier this year. "We're just having normal conversations as any other person in Arrowhead Stadium that night. She loves the Chiefs just as much as I do," Clark said. "I'm talking football with her. She loved it, and just like her passion, and honestly, probably one of the sweetest people I've ever been around. And everybody says that when you meet her, but it's really true. She just treats everybody with the same amount of kindness, and her family was great." While she likes to have fun away from the court, Clark is all business inside the painted lines. She showed up to Thursday night's game with a business casual look that made it clear the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year is ready to go. Fans loved the look. Advertisement "CC got the cape on today. We're winning by 30," one person joked. "Damn if they can hit the same percentage of shots on the court as they did w the fits fever wins by a landslide," offered another. "Caitlin look like she bouta sell me insurance," joked a third. In the first meeting between the two teams, Clark dropped a game-high 27 points to go along with 11 assists and five rebounds in the loss. Caitlin Clark Praised for Actions Before Fever Defeated Angel Reese, Chicago Sky

On Saturday, June 7, the Indiana Fever continued their success against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky despite not having their best player on the court. With Caitlin Clark nursing an injury, the Fever cruised to a 79-52 victory as the team moved to 4-4 on the season. Ahead of the game, the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year revealed she'd miss the game as she continues to recover from a quad injury. Advertisement "I'll miss this weekend's game, but after that, it's day-by-day and see how I feel, and just turn to the medical staff and what they think," Clark said. "I feel like I've made a lot of progress and I feel good, and I'm not going to rush coming back. It's just not worth it. But after this weekend, I'll be reevaluated and we'll have a better idea of when I'll return." Despite not being able to play in the contest, Clark gave fans special attention before the game tipped off. She was spotted signing autographs for a packed fan section ahead of the contest. "Look at all those fans and she's trying her hardest to give all of them a little attention," one fan said about the star point guard showing love to fans. Advertisement "CC is one of the nicest people. Always supports her fans," added another. "People's choice as always. Unreal aura," added a third. As for her return to the court, Clark isn't putting a timeline on it just yet. "We'll see," Clark said on her status for Tuesday's game against the Atlanta Dream. "We're trying not to put an exact date out there, because it is kind of a day-by-day thing and see how I feel. It's the type of injury like, you don't know, when I wake up, I'll feel different than the day before. We'll see. It could be a possibility, but I could also not be available for that game, too." Clark's next two opportunities to play are against the Dream on June 10 and the New York Liberty on June 14.
