A challenging ACL 2 campaign awaits Mohun Bagan SG and FC Goa

The Hindu14 hours ago
Mohun Bagan Super Giant and FC Goa, the champion clubs of the country's top football tournaments, found their groups and opponents in the AFC Champions League Two first stage after the draw at football's continental body headquarters— AFC House — in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
Mohun Bagan, the League Shield and Cup winner of the Indian Super League (2024-25 season), has been drawn in Group C alongside Sepahan SC of Iran, Al Hussein SC of Jordan and Ahal FC of Turkmenistan.
FC Goa, the Kalinga Super Cup 2025 winner, has been placed in Group D with Al Nassr Club of Saudi Arabia, which has former Ballon D'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo in its ranks, as the top draw. The other two sides are Al Zawra SC of Iraq and FC Istiklol of Tajikistan.
Goa qualified to the group stage after beating Al Seeb Club of Oman 2-1 in the preliminary stage play-off match at Fatorda on Wednesday. Mohun Bagan had directly qualified to the ACL 2 group stage by virtue of being the ISL topper.
The initial league format has all teams in the group facing each other in a home and away, double-round robin format. The group stage will run from September 16 to December 24. The top two from each group will qualify for the Round of 16.

The knock-out stage will be held between February 10 to 19, 2026. The quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled between March 3 to 12 and April 7 to 15 while the final comes up on May 16, 2026.
The Iranian club Sepahan, runner-up in the Persian Gulf Pro League 2024-25, will be Bagan's toughest opponent considering it came from Pot 1 in the draw which arranged the teams in four categories according to their rankings.
The second team in the order is the Jordan Pro League champion Al Hussein SC while Bagan was placed in Pot 3. Ahal FC, the runner-up of Turkmenistan's top league Yokary Liga (2024) is the last name in the group.

FC Goa (placed in pot 4) is up against a more fancied Al Nassr, the third-placed side from the Saudi Pro League. Al Nassr employs a constellation of global stars like Sadio Mane among others in addition to Ronaldo. The other teams are the Iraq Stars League runner-up Al Zawra'a SC and FC Istiklol, which is the Tajikistan Higher League champion.

'Once-in-a-lifetime' – FC Goa to host Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr in September

Al Nassr's Cristiano Ronaldo (AP Photo, file) Cristiano Ronaldo is set to visit India later this year, as Al-Nassr will take on FC Goa in what is being billed as one of the most significant fixtures in Indian club football history. The Saudi Arabian side has been drawn in Group D of the Asian Champions League Two alongside FC Goa, Tajikistan's Istiklol, and Iraq's Al-Zawraa. The top two from each group will progress to the next round when the competition kicks off in September. 'This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment for FC Goa,' club CEO Ravi Puskur told The Associated Press. 'Hosting Al-Nassr and Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the biggest game in our history.' Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Ronaldo, 40, joined Al-Nassr in 2022 but is still chasing his first major trophy with the Riyadh-based club. The team, which also features Sadio Mane and newly signed Joao Felix from Chelsea, is expected to arrive at full strength. Puskur believes the match has the potential to be a landmark for Indian football, offering a platform to showcase the country's ability to compete on the continental stage. 'This is historic for Indian football. We are here on merit, and matches like this help us become part of the sport's biggest narratives,' he said. Poll Do you believe hosting Al-Nassr will boost FC Goa's popularity? Yes, definitely Maybe No, it won't The timing is significant, as domestic football in India faces uncertainty. The 2025-26 ISL season has been suspended amid a dispute over the league's organising agreement, with several clubs halting salaries or operations. Puskur stressed that beyond the financial benefits, the fixture could drive long-term growth. 'It's an opportunity to attract global attention, generate sponsorship interest, and reignite fan engagement — all of which are vital for the future of the sport here,' he added. With Cup playoffs at stake, controversial limits of rough driving could be tested again at Richmond

NASCAR playoff desperation reached a controversial peak at Richmond Raceway last year. HT Image At the mercy of securing a victory to make the 16-driver field that competes for the Cup championship, Austin Dillon wrecked Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin in the final two corners of the last lap to claim his first win in nearly two years. The celebration was short-lived as NASCAR revoked Dillon's playoff eligibility three days later in determining the Richard Childress Racing driver 'crossed a line' with rough driving. 'NASCAR drew a line in the sand,' Hamlin said Friday. 'They're not afraid to make hard decisions, and I think that's very, very important to the governing of the sport, so it's not a circus. And so I do feel a little bit better about it now than 12 months ago. "Certainly, that was the first time we'd seen something like that, and NASCAR had a precedent to set. If you let that go, you open up a floodgate of crazy things that would be bad for the relevance and legitimacy of the sport. Everyone probably has a little better understanding now because of the ruling.' As NASCAR's premier series returns Saturday night to Richmond, Virginia, with two races remaining in the regular season and three open slots in the playoffs, did Dillon's win establish the new boundary of what's permissible in pushing for a victory that guarantees a berth in the 10-race run to the title? For the Cup driver who has gone to greater lengths than anyone in aggressively moving rivals this season, the question is moot. 'I think that was sort of a freak deal,' Spire Motorsports driver Carson Hocevar said. 'If you had them rerun the same play, I don't think he gets both of them. 'I don't think we'll ever see someone get one guy and then turn down and get the second guy. That was one of those once in a blue moon or lifetime things that was a perfect storm of chaos. They were all in the most perfect spots for him to win by all means necessary. It would be really hard to ever replicate.' If Richmond were to deliver another combustible finish, few are as willing to tangle with the competition as Hocevar. The Spire Motorsports driver has gotten sideways with a seemingly endless list of drivers — Ross Chastain, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Zane Smith are among the most aggrieved. Sunday at Watkins Glen International, Hocevar angered Brad Keselowski in qualifying and then collided multiple times with teammate Michael McDowell during the race. Though he planned to iron out differences with McDowell, the 23-year-old Hocevar seems unconcerned about crossing a veteran with his No. 77 Chevrolet for a win. 'I don't take a head count of who's frustrated with or mad at us,' he said. 'It's constantly changing by the week.' Despite a solid second season in Cup with career-high second-place finishes at Atlanta and Nashville, Hocevar is 22nd in the points standings because of multiple mechanical failures. His only path to the playoffs is automatically qualifying with a win, which also holds for Kyle Busch, Ty Gibbs and Keselowski. At least one winless driver will make the playoffs on points. Tyler Reddick could clinch a playoff spot Saturday without a victory. In the battle for the final provisional spot, Chris Buescher leads Roush Fenway Keselowski Ford teammate Ryan Preece by 34 points. 'If you're in position and have the opportunity to win, I don't want to think about what I should have done differently,' Preece said. 'You need to be a racer and not leave anything on the table. You've got to do it with respect, but at the same time, a half-lap can change your entire season.' Ranked 28th in the standings, Dillon is in the same win-or-else position at Richmond as a year ago and is no less confident about the No. 3 Chevy's chances on the 0.75-mile oval. 'I'm pumped,' he said. 'I just want to see if we can be as successful as last year. It was still a big day, and I'll always remember it as one of my favorite wins. We got the trophy, just not the NASCAR playoffs spot.' Xfinity Series points leader Connor Zilisch underwent surgery Tuesday morning on the broken collarbone he suffered in a hard fall while celebrating his Aug. 9 victory at Watkins Glen International. Though it's unclear if Zilisch will return for the Aug. 22 race at Daytona International Speedway, his injury has made an impact with drivers now mindful of their exuberance upon exiting their cars in victory lane. 'That was so frightening, so I think we'll all think about it more,' Wood Brothers Racing driver Josh Berry said. 'We've been strapped in the car for three or four hours. You get out, and it's no different than being on a plane and standing up for the first time. Your legs are a little shaky.' Team Penske's Austin Cindric said it might be a 'rookie mistake' for a winner to leave the window net dangling outside the car . 'I think about what happened to Connor often because the saying goes big trees fall hard,' said Cindric, who stands 6-foot-3. 'That's a long way for a big, tall guy to fall. It's kind of an upsetting thing to watch and feel helpless about it.' Denny Hamlin is the BetMGM Sportsbook favorite for Richmond, followed by Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell , Kyle Larson , Joey Logano and William Byron . … Richmond Raceway is playing host to its only NASCAR race weekend this season. The 0.75-mile oval had two annual races on the Cup schedule from 1959-2024 . … Chase Briscoe of Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 19 Toyota is the only driver with top 10s in the season's first three short-track races at Martinsville Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway and Iowa Speedway. auto racing: /hub/auto-racing This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Why The Maven says Atlantic Division is the powerhouse of the NHL?

(Image via Imagn Images) In an ongoing debate over the NHL's toughest division, veteran hockey analyst The Maven is calling the Atlantic Division the league's powerhouse. It all started with the Florida Panthers winning back-to-back Stanley Cup victories. Earlier reports suggest that the Tampa Bay Lightning claimed consecutive championships of their own. Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs, despite their Cup drought, remain one of the league's most formidable rosters and its richest franchise. Meanwhile, the youthful Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens are viewed as emerging threats for years to come. Let's take a look at what the Maven has to say about the Atlantic division. What did The Maven say about the Atlantic Division? After asking The Maven about the best team in the NHL, he replied that the Atlantic Division is the best. He responded to the question, 'It has to be the Atlantic; no questions asked. Start with the fact that it's home to the two-time Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. Not that long ago, the Atlantic's Tampa Bay Lightning won two straight Stanley. He further added, 'While the Maple Leafs never win the prize – and may never - Toronto, the NHL's richest team, always delivers a formidable entry. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo Likewise, the youth-filled Senators and Canadiens threaten to become serious Cup challengers next season and for many seasons thereafter.' NHL Tonight: Atlantic Division Outlook Why The Maven says The Atlantic is the powerhouse of the NHL? When it comes to the race for the runner-up position, The Maven sees it as a tie between the Central Division and the Pacific Division. Both divisions are packed with top-tier talent and have a history of championship success. The Pacific Division features the Edmonton Oilers, who are powered by superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. These two have led their team to the Stanley Cup Finals twice in the last two years. Not to be overlooked, the Vegas Golden Knights are fresh off their own Cup victory in 2023, highlighting just how fierce the competition is in this division. How does the Atlantic Division finish this year? | OverDrive Hour 1 | 04-02-25 On the other hand, the Central Division is no slouch either, boasting some heavy hitters. The Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, and Winnipeg Jets have all been formidable in recent seasons, consistently finishing at the top of the standings and making significant playoff runs. This depth, as The Maven points out, keeps the Central Division firmly in the conversation among the league's elite. As for the Metropolitan Division, The Maven emphasizes that its lower ranking doesn't indicate weakness; rather, it reflects recent performances. He added, 'Every division has talent, but winning is what counts the most,' The Maven remarked. 'And right now, no division is winning like the Atlantic.' However, the Maven asserts that the Atlantic will continue to reign as the NHL's powerhouse. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
