Max Verstappen issues fresh statement amid backlash over actions at Spanish GP

Daily Mirror2 days ago

Max Verstappen has admitted he was wrong to slam into George Russell during the Spanish Grand Prix. In the latter stages of the race, the Dutchman lost his temper and appeared to deliberately hit into the Mercedes of his British rival.
When asked after the race if he had done it on purpose, Verstappen was unapologetic and simply replied: "Does it matter?". But now, having slept on it, the Red Bull racer has taken to social media to admit that he crossed a line – though he did not apologise.
He wrote: "We had an exciting strategy and good race in Barcelona, until the safety car came out. Our tyre choice to the end and some moves after the safety car restart fuelled my frustration, leading to a move that was not right and shouldn't have happened.
"I always give everything out there for the team and emotions can run high. You win some together, you lose some together. See you in Montreal."
Verstappen had been angered after a safety car restart with six laps to go, when he felt two other drivers initiated contact with his Red Bull. One of them was Charles Leclerc and the other was Russell, who the Dutchman felt had forced him off at turn one.
Shortly after, Verstappen was advised by his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to cede his place to Russell, Red Bull clearly worried that their driver had left the track and gained an advantage by staying in front of the Mercedes.
That prompted a furious response over the radio from the four-time Formula 1 champion. He then slowed down and appeared to be complying with that request, until he then suddenly sped up again and banged wheel with Russell's Mercedes.
The stewards were unimpressed and, though they did not disqualify Verstappen as Nico Rosberg wanted, they handed him a 10-second time penalty which dropped him to 10th place in the final classification. That meant he scored just one point and lost significant ground to rivals Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in the title race.
Formula 1 fans can watch every practice, qualifying and race live with Sky's new Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle in a new deal that saves £192.
As well as Sky Sports access, this includes more than 100 TV channels and free subscriptions to Netflix and Discovery+.
Perhaps even more pertinently, three more penalty points were placed on his racing licence. He now has a tally of 11, meaning one more before any of his current points expire – two of them will become void at the end of June, after the next two races – will incur an automatic race ban.

Leah Williamson admits England failed to produce their best in defeat to Spain

The Lionesses missed out on a place in the Women's Nations League finals after Claudia Pina's brace earned Spain top spot in Group A3. Alessia Russo had put England ahead on her 50th international appearance, despite Spanish players protesting that Salma Paralluelo had been fouled in the build-up. But second-half substitute Pina proved to be the difference with two goals in the space of 10 minutes booking Spain's place in October's semi-finals. What it means 🙌 Netting on her 50th cap 👊 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) June 3, 2025 England had come into the game on the back of a 6-0 win over Portugal and with the European Championship starting next month, Williamson believes there are 'tweaks' to be made. 'I think in the second half they pressed a bit higher, we struggled, we couldn't keep the ball as well as we had done in the first half. We didn't really have any real threat,' Williamson told ITV Sport. 'Under that much pressure against a top side, sometimes that's what happens, they get to you and win the game. 'I think especially first half was a great display, but for the most part we looked solid and we felt solid. 'We feel good, there's just tweaks that need to be made and it's disappointing because that's a competitive fixture and that's an important campaign to us going forward with rankings and seedings. 'I think you saw maybe the best of us the previous game and just slightly off it today.' England boss Sarina Wiegman believes her team showed signs of threat throughout the first half. 'Very intense game. Of course we know that they're very tight on the ball,' she added. 'I think we did well, after the first half they had a little more of the ball, but saw we had the ball a lot too. 'I think we could've been a bit tighter and patient in the first half too, but you could see where we could harm them. I think a couple more times we would not have been offside or play a little quicker behind or switch play quicker, we could've harmed them even more. 'Second half they started really quick, they did something different and pressed really high. We had some trouble to get out of the press and keep the ball. 'Of course they brought Pina in and she was very secure with her shots.' England's attention now turns to Euro 2025 and Wiegman is set to announce her squad for the tournament this week. The team play Jamaica in a friendly on June 29 before their Euros campaign begins against France in Zurich on July 5. Wiegman added: 'What you've seen this week is that we had a very good week. Players coming back from injuries, players fighting for positions or minutes or selection and I think that's very positive. 'Some will keep training because they need to train, others will take a couple of days off. Then we move forward and come together get ready for Jamaica, then for France.'
