
Cambrian Training Celebrates its 30 Years in Business by Becoming a 100% Employee Owned Trust
Cambrian Training Company (CTC) is one of the leading work-based learning apprenticeship providers in Wales.
It was established in Welshpool, Powys, in 1995 as a subsidiary of Mid Wales Tourism to deliver vocational skills that supported the development of the region's tourism sector. Seven years later in 2002, a management buy-out saw the organisation become an independent company, led by an experienced team committed to maintaining its base in Mid Wales while expanding geographically.
Today, it is the largest provider of hospitality and food & drink manufacturing apprenticeships in Wales and provides apprenticeships across a wide range of sectors pan Wales. It's headquartered in Welshpool and has five offices covering North, Mid and South Wales.

In the last 30 years Cambrian Training Company has delivered more than 20,000 apprenticeship programmes across Wales in more than 4,500 businesses.

Our commitment is demonstrated through our own staff participating within the sectors we deliver and through apprenticeship programmes, ensuring we stay connected to the learning journey we promote.
'We've supported our own staff to take up work-based learning apprenticeships. I've completed four apprenticeships; three of our four Directors are ex-apprentices and over 60% of our workforce are current or past apprentices.'
Apprenticeships are transformative in achieving personal and professional aspirations. They help build a highly-skilled and productive workforce to support the growth and success of Wales' economy.
CTC strongly believes apprenticeships should be open to all. The company has apprentices from the age of 16 who've just left school all the way up to apprentices aged over 50. CTC has also championed the Supported Shared Apprenticeships programme designed to support Welsh people with special and additional learning needs to enter the workforce.

There were two winners in particular that highlight the value of following the apprenticeship route for both learners, employers and the Welsh economy.
Cameron Long was named Foundation Apprentice of the Year. Cameron is autistic neuro diverse and has difficulty with his hearing and his mobility. He recently completed his Commercial Cleaning & Support Services Level 2 apprenticeship on Cambrian Training's Supported Shared Apprenticeship programme and as a result has secured a part-time job with Elite Clothing Solutions.
Kepak received the Outstanding Contribution to Apprenticeships award, that was selected on the basis of a company's apprenticeship programme's impact on the local community, their innovation and leadership and sustainability and legacy. The family-owned, globally operating meat producer is the largest meat processing facility in Wales, employing over 850 staff and playing a critical role in UK food supply chains. It offers apprenticeship qualifications from Level 2 through to Level 5 in Meat and Poultry Industry Skills, Food Manufacturing and Management.
Since the introduction of the apprenticeship programme with Cambrian Training, Kepak has reported a 15% reduction in staff turnover and improved staff engagement across the business.
Apprenticeships are helping to close vital skills gaps, build future managers, and reduce recruitment costs by developing talent from within. The business contributes over £200 million annually to the local economy and supports job security in Merthyr Tydfil and strengthens the future of one of Wales' most important food sector employers.

New Era of Reskilling Needed to Shape Future-fit Workforce in Wales
The labour market in Wales is being reshaped by three key trends – automation, the transition to net zero, and an ageing workforce – transforming both the nature of work and the skills required for jobs in Wales. A new CIPD report, Lifelong Learning in the Reskilling Era, highlights how these trends offer opportunities, but also risk deepening inequalities if workers are unable to reskill or retrain. In response, the report calls for a 'new era of reskilling' with action from Welsh employers and the UK Government to help people – of all ages – develop new skills, stay in employment and build long-term financial security. Automation: transforming jobs Research cited in the report reveals that automation threatens 3.6% of jobs in Wales, higher than the UK average of 3%. Those in low-skilled and administrative roles are particularly at risk, as are young workers (aged 16–24) due to their strong presence in entry-level or low-skill positions. However, the report highlights that these technological shifts also present significant opportunities for more fulfilling and higher-quality jobs. For example, 28% of jobs in Wales are estimated to be exposed to generative AI which is expected to help reduce repetitive or time-consuming tasks, and create new roles, business models, and industries. The key challenge for employers will be to ensure that workers are not left behind but are equipped to seize these emerging opportunities. Organisations are urged to prioritise targeted training and reskilling to empower employees to adapt to new ways of working or transition into entirely new roles. Green skills urgently needed Wales currently has 11,000 full-time roles in low-carbon sectors, and looking ahead, it is estimated that around 6.3 million workers in the UK (one in five) will see their job change due to the transition to net zero by 2050. For about 10% of workers, this will involve adapting to new skill requirements, while another 10% may need to retrain entirely. In response, the CIPD's report calls for urgent investment in green skills training. It warns that without such investment, businesses in Wales will struggle to compete in emerging markets or reap the economic and environmental benefits of supporting the UK Government's target of reaching net zero by 2050. Employers in construction, energy, manufacturing, and logistics are especially urged to embed green skills into workforce planning, to remain competitive and drive sustainable growth. Longer working lives will reshape the workforce Demographic shifts are also reshaping the Welsh workforce. Employment among 50–64-year-olds in Wales has increased by 32% over the last two decades – more than triple the overall employment growth rate of just 9% in Wales (from 2004-2024). Yet, Wales has one of the lowest employment rates for older workers in the UK at 67%, compared to 76% in the South East of England. Furthermore, by 2050, the UK will see a 41% increase in people aged 65 and over (from 19% to 23% of the population), while the share of those under 25 will decline from 29% to 24%. This demographic transformation presents a fundamental challenge to how we approach work, retirement, and economic growth. As people live and work longer, many will reassess their career goals. Some may seek more flexible roles to accommodate caregiving or health needs, while others may pursue retraining for new opportunities later in life. However, with declining access to training and job mobility as people age, there's a risk that older people may become trapped in unsuitable roles or fall out of the labour market entirely if their jobs are displaced or no longer fit their mobility needs, impacting their earning potential and wellbeing. A future-fit workforce in Wales Considering these challenges – and new UK Government data showing nearly 45% of workers aren't contributing to a pension – Wales risks falling behind in building a future-ready, financially resilient workforce, without coordinated action from employers and policymakers. A collaborative approach to reskilling and lifelong learning is urgently needed to help workers – of all ages – adapt and stay in work. To achieve this, further recommendations for the Government and Welsh employers in the report include: Boost workplace training with more internal skills development, reskilling, and redeployment opportunities. This will expose people new skills and different roles. Address barriers to adult learning like time and cost, especially for those with work or caregiving responsibilities and open up more flexible learning pathways. The Government should consider introducing individual support measures such as training vouchers, flexible learning accounts, and paid educational leave. If changes to retirement age and the pensions crisis mean we're all going to work for longer, we urgently need to usher in a new era of reskilling to help people develop into new roles and sectors. However, the real challenge lies not just in keeping people in work longer – it's about the quality and sustainability of that work. By reimaging how we support people to learn and adapt throughout their lives, we can build a more resilient, equitable and prosperous future for everyone.

How's the Water? Making a Better Business Environment for Wales
A favourable business environment is key to economic success. All businesses – but particularly smaller businesses – depend upon local skills provision, on good infrastructure, on support and advice, and on a regulation system that is not too complex. Often, one business owner has to deal with everything from employment law and health and safety, to business strategy and stock to marketing and so on. Less time means fewer opportunities taken. Of course, there are plenty of examples of high-flying and high-profile entrepreneurs whose image suggests that their success is entirely their own doing. But one academic compares entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley who attribute success to themselves alone as like a fish being told it is thriving because of water – to which the fish replies: 'What is water?'. The environment around a successful business contributes in huge part to making it thrive – and can indeed be taken for granted. This is a mistake which can all too often be made by policy makers, where the need to 'tend' the environment is often unappreciated. And yet government needs business success in order to achieve its wider policy goals. The economy is the foundation of success not just in terms of prosperity, but also in terms of building the base for social and environmental policy success. This is a central idea in recent work on economic success which looks at 'entrepreneurial ecosystems'. This approach argues that entrepreneurship can be taught, and it can be cultivated with an environment conducive to supporting businesses and to lowering barriers to business success. Ecologies differ from each other and rely on different sources of strength. What works in Silicon Valley can't just be transplanted to the Welsh Valleys. Nevertheless, nothing is set in stone – and we can proactively look to make an environment that supports our businesses toward future success, even if that has been difficult in the past. How we use Welsh strengths to create that supportive environment is what FSB Cymru's recent report 'Cultivating Small Business Growth' seeks to address. We conducted a survey of SMEs and a series of interviews with businesses as well as with business support providers to gather evidence on what works. Firstly, it is important to note that the core of our business support system – Business Wales and Development Bank of Wales – is a well-recognised brand. This may seem mundane but, given that in Wales we often find confusion about where powers lie relative to UK Government, this is in fact a real advantage. It's also one to capitalise upon in developing a clear one-stop-shop for SMEs in Wales. While imperfect, if we did not already have these organisations we would need to create something like them. Our survey and interviews suggest that businesses are broadly positive about Business Wales, with our survey noting that 58% have a positive experience versus 22% having a negative experience. That can and should be improved however, and we did find a lot of businesses finding the system unwieldy and too slow in addressing their immediate needs. Business support organisations can improve the experience of services by increasing face-to-face engagement, setting targets for how quickly queries receive a response and implementing a 'case officer' approach with a named point of contact. With the UK Government now looking to implement its Industrial Strategy and its upcoming Small Business Strategy, as well as its new iteration of Shared Prosperity Funding next year, it's important that we use what already works, and target increased funding as investment in small business growth. This will need: A properly resourced system: The Welsh Government should restore funding levels for business support in Wales in real terms to those in place before the UK left the EU, and commit to multi-year budgets. In short, we must collectively acknowledge the importance of the business environment in cultivating business success in Wales, and we must act collaboratively to improve it. Then we will be able to ask our SMEs: 'How's the water in Wales?' and be confident that their reply will be: 'Well, the water's very nice, actually.'

'I live in a £3m party pad on an island you can only reach by boat or helicopter'
Eight years ago tech entrepreneur Mike Conner bought a dilapidated fort on a remote Welsh island and began an epic restoration project to turn it into a unique home that's now for up for sale. If the idea of complete solitude, away from the hustle and bustle, with only the sound of crashing waves, chirping birds and stunning sea views as your backdrop sounds like heaven, then private island life is for you. Oh, and you'll need a cool £3million to secure it. Thorne Island, accessible only by boat from the Pembrokeshire mainland or via helicopter, thanks to a handy helipad, is one of Wales ' most extraordinary locations. It's now on the market for offers over £3m. The island is dominated by an impressive fort, which one man has spent years and over £2m of his own money restoring. This historic Grade II defensive building has been transformed into a home and potential business venture. With no neighbours in sight, it could also be the ultimate party pad. Thorne Island fort was initially constructed during the 1850s, forming part of a dozen fortifications erected around Pembroke Dock's entrance as "Palmerston's Haven defences" to ward off potential Napoleonic attacks. However, in 2017 the historic Welsh structure was stumbled upon by a restoration enthusiast who had a grand vision for the island. Businessman Mike Conner, now 52, took the leap to resurrect the island and fort after spotting it in a YouTube clip. Despite the challenges, he remained undeterred in his mission to save the fort from ruin and transform it into one of Wales' most remarkable homes, employing a team of local tradespeople, boat companies and specialist craftspeople over many years. Eight years on from purchasing it, the fort has become a unique dwelling and arguably one of the most intricate and ambitious renovation projects undertaken in Wales, if not the UK. Among the hurdles was the significant problem of how to deliver supplies and equipment for the works. But Mr Conner had a solution. Over just two days, 350 helicopter trips were made, airlifting everything onto the island. Inside the fort, there are bright and spacious rooms, wood-burning stoves, mezzanine bedrooms with spiral staircases, and luxurious new bathroom facilities - a modern and comfortable space that feels worlds away from how it looked when the project commenced. The impressive 8,000 square feet of living space includes a bespoke rooftop bar offering incredible views overlooking St Ann's Head, and an internal courtyard that's perfect for hosting unforgettable parties. Guests can arrive in true James Bond or Agatha Christie style, flying in via helicopter or arriving by boat, and then party into the night without worrying about disturbing neighbours or dealing with uninvited guests. There's ample room for overnight guests too, as the fort currently has five bedrooms. However, bedroom two, formerly the soldiers' barracks, is a long and spacious room that can accommodate many people. The property also features a large kitchen diner and family area, a spacious lounge and dining room, and numerous shower rooms and cloakrooms. There are plenty of storage rooms, a mezzanine level, a workshop, and a boiler room as well. The fort is listed, so no walls can be removed, but there are numerous rooms and spaces that can be tailored to suit the new owner's desires - fewer bedrooms and more reception space, or perhaps a massive gym once the equipment has been brought in, a huge banqueting hall - the possibilities are endless. Mike adds that there's another unique aspect to living at Thorne Island, besides its history, structure and location - it offers absolute silence from man-made noise and disruption, surrounded by breath-taking 360-degree views and plenty of opportunities for exploration on land and sea. Following the years of graft and the many obstacles that Mike faced - challenges unique to this extraordinary renovation - a fresh owner can now relish the island without enduring the strain of such an epic undertaking; though routine maintenance checks against the elements will be essential to preserve his remarkable efforts. Spanning from 2017 to 2025, Mike has accomplished something genuinely extraordinary, though he occasionally overlooks this feat, reflecting: "The trouble is, with something this big, you never really stand back and see what you've achieved, so it's nice to see how far we've come when I watch the original YouTube video back."
