Why is Pete Alonso not starting Sunday? Mets announce lineup for series finale vs. Reds
After starting in each of the Mets' first 99 games, Alonso is dealing with a right hand contusion and was absent for the start of Sunday's series finale against the Reds at 1:40 p.m. at Citi Field.
Carlos Mendoza said that X-rays on Alonso's hand came back negative. The Mets first baseman said he was feeling better and could potentially be considered to come off the bench.
Alonso, who is considered day-to-day, did not miss a game throughout the 2024 season.
Mark Vientos is making his 10th career start at first base and batting cleanup in Alonso's place.
The Mets have one last chance to avoid the ultimate stumble out of the All-Star break.
After dropping the opening two games of their series with the Reds, the Mets have the chance to mitigate a sweep at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday at Citi Field.
The finale will be a duel of All-Star starters.
David Peterson will be on the mound for the Mets. The left-hander has been their most consistent starter this season, posting a 6-4 record with a 3.06 ERA through 18 starts to secure his first All-Star appearance this week.
Peterson threw a scoreless fourth inning in the Midsummer Classic.
On the other side, Andrew Abbott has filled the role as Reds ace. The lefty is 8-1 with a 2.07 ERA and 1.08 WHIP.

Brian Burns: Giants' defense looks great on paper, but we haven't done it yet
Giants outside linebacker Brian Burns believes the talent on the roster this season is good enough for a big turnaround. It's on the players to make that happen. "Everybody feels encouraged and excited and hyped up at the beginning of the season," Burns said. "At the same time, we look great on paper, but we ain't do shit yet, you understand? So it's all on us. We can take this as far as we want to go. Everything looked good with the names that we have and the potential and this and that, but until we put that shit to stamp, ain't really nothing to talk about." Asked if that's something he has reminded his teammates about in his role as a veteran leader, Burns said everyone in the Giants' locker room already understands. "I don't feel like it's needed," Burns said. "I feel like everybody's working hard. Nobody's entitled to whatever hype that we do have. I think everybody has a common understanding that we need to get out here and show." Burns spent his first five NFL seasons with the Panthers, who had a losing record all five years, and then was traded to the Giants last year and went through an ugly 3-14 season.
