Trump to trade the Oval Office for The Octagon with UFC appearance
The president is set to attend UFC 314 in Miami, where Australian Alexander Volkanovski is set to take on Diego Lopes of Brazil in the featherweight title bout.
His attendance at the late-night fight underscores his reemergence in the American pop cultural mainstream as he deploys the trappings of office to attend some of the nation's premier sporting events. It also highlights his long and loyal ties to the UFC organization and its CEO, Dana White, and the alignment between the mixed martial arts brand and the young men who propelled Trump back to the White House.
With the exception of nearly weekly trips to his Mar-a-Lago property in South Florida, the president's domestic travel has been rare during his second term. But since taking office, he has flown aboard Air Force One to attend the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach, and the NCAA men's wrestling championships in Philadelphia.
His warm reception at those events has emphasized his transformation from a pariah and punchline of American popular culture back to the status he enjoyed during his 'Apprentice' days.
'President Trump and the UFC are cultural icons. He is a fan of the sport and the elite competitive spirit of all the athletes who step into the Octagon,' White House communications director Steven Cheung told CNN.
Cheung added, 'He'll be sitting cage side, like he always does, and the crowd will erupt in applause as he makes his signature walkout.'
Trump, who has long styled himself a 'fighter,' successfully tapped into the male-oriented podcast sphere during his 2024 campaign, boosting his turnout among low-propensity voters as he and top surrogates leaned into interviews with host Joe Rogan, Barstool Sports' 'Bussin' With The Boys,' and Andrew Schulz's 'Flagrant,' among others – offering listeners long-form, unfiltered and un-fact-checked conversations.
Many male-oriented podcasters discuss physical fitness, promote traditional traits of masculinity and often share a deep appreciation for mixed martial arts, specifically UFC.
Founded in 1993, UFC has emerged as a mainstream, major sporting organization in recent years — in parallel, in some ways, to Trump's political ascendance. In 2019, the sport announced a deal with the Walt Disney Company to broadcast its 'Fight Night' events on ESPN+, and UFC broadcasts now reach an estimated 975 million households across 170 countries, according to a recent press release.
Trump has supported the brand for decades, most recently attending a UFC event shortly after his November election victory at New York City's Madison Square Garden, where he was cheered upon his arrival to a ringside seat, feted with a special video celebrating his win, and flanked by White, Kid Rock, House Speaker Mike Johnson, Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump Jr.
Like with many of the president's closest allies, Trump's longtime friendship with the UFC CEO is one forged in loyalty.
In White's early days with the organization, he was struggling to secure venues for his fights. Trump agreed to host the event at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City in 2001.
'Nobody wanted to give him a ring because they said it's a rough sport, a little rough. And I helped him out a little bit and I went and they said, 'This is the roughest sport I've ever seen.' But I began to like it and he loved it, and nobody's done a better job in sports,' Trump said during his 2024 victory speech in West Palm Beach as White joined the new president-elect's nearest and dearest onstage.
White emerged as a key surrogate for Trump in 2024 as his campaign sought to bolster its appeal to young men. UFC has a plugged-in fan base on and offline — boasting tens of millions of followers on social media. One of its biggest stars, Conor McGregor, has 46.7 million Instagram followers.
So when the time came for the then-former president to select someone to introduce him at the Republican National Convention in July 2024, Trump, who was introduced by daughter Ivanka in 2020 and wife Melania in 2016, went with White.
'I'm in the tough guy business, and this man is the toughest, most resilient human being that I've ever met in my life,' White said in his remarks, calling Trump a 'real American bada**.'

White House Backs Off 'Hostile Takeover' of D.C. Police
The White House has backed off plans for a full takeover of the D.C. police force and will allow for the city's police chief to remain in charge after a judge indicated they would block the move. President Donald Trump this week invoked emergency powers to take control of the D.C. police department and call in the National Guard to a city that he claimed is overrun by "bloodshed, bedlam and squalor"—a claim that is disputed by experts. Read More: Trump Paints a Picture of D.C. as a Crime-Ridden Hell-Hole. Here Are the Facts As part of the federal takeover, Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed Drug and Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Terrance C. Cole as 'Emergency Police Commissioner,' a move that would have given the White House extraordinary powers over policing. The city's Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit calling for an emergency restraining order to block the move, accusing the Trump Administration of implementing a 'hostile takeover' of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) that would lead to 'imminent, irreparable harm'. 'In my nearly three decades in law enforcement, I have never seen a single government action that would cause a greater threat to law and order than this dangerous directive,' Smith wrote in the lawsuit Judge Ana Reyes said in a Friday hearing that, according to the Home Rule Act, the Department of Justice needed to rewrite the section of the executive order that placed Cole in charge, and that he needed to go through the city's mayor. Reyes stopped short of issuing a restraining order, but indicated that if the DOJ did not rewrite the section, she would. Read More: Trump Took Over the D.C. Police. He Can't Do It In Other Cities, Legal Experts Say 'The statute [The Home Rule Act] would have no meaning at all if the president could just say 'we're taking over your police department,'' Reyes said. In a press conference after the hearing, Schwalb touted the result as a 'very important win for Home Rule today.' A new directive by Bondi following the lawsuit allowed for Chief Pamela Smith to remain in charge of the force, though the city will still be under the Administration's control, and orders will be sent through the city's Mayor Muriel Bowser. The Trump Administration will still essentially have control over the city, but Smith will maintain control of the day-to-day operations of the MPD. In Bondi's new directive, though, she also required MPD to comply with the Trump Administration's aggressive immigration tactics, rescinding two police practices that limited MPD's immigration enforcement—also known as 'sanctuary policies.' D.C's At-Large Councilmember Christina Henderson reacted on X that, 'Respectfully, the Attorney General does not have the authority to revoke laws.' In the first week alone of the Trump Administration's federal takeover, nearly 200 arrests have been reported in the city, including many undocumented immigrants, which has alarmed civil rights groups.

Putin demands Zelensky surrenders Donestsk region as condition for ending war in Ukraine
Vladimir Putin is demanding Ukraine surrender the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk provinces as a condition for ending the war in Ukraine. The Russian leader told Donald Trump that he would be prepared to stop fighting on the rest of the frontline if Ukraine gave in to the demand and address 'root causes of the conflict'. The concessions were discussed at the highly-anticipated summit of the two leaders in Alaska on Friday, which ended with no peace deal despite nearly three hours of talks. Sources very close to the meeting told The Independent the dramatic move appears to have been endorsed by Mr Trump as a means to bring an end to the war. They said that Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky would want to 'clarify this on Monday' when he meets with Mr Trump on Monday in Washington DC. Mr Putin's condition for Ukrainian troops to withdraw from Donetsk and Luhansk, which make up the Donbas region, follow circulated reports on the demand ahead of Friday's summit. The Russian president also said he would freeze the frontline in the southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, where his forces occupy large territory. However, Putin made clear he would not fall back on core demands to 'resolve root causes of the conflict', that includes Ukraine becoming a neutral state and abandoning Nato aspirations. The Donetsk region has been centre of much of recent fighting, with Russian troops making a sudden thrust near the eastern town of Dobrophillya in the days before the summit. While Russia controls almost all of Luhansk, it holds about 70 per cent of Donetsk. Last week, Mr Zelensky insisted he would reject any proposal to withdraw from the industrial Donbas region, claiming it would 'open a bridgehead' for Russian offensive. All eyes will now turn to his meeting with Mr Trump on Monday. After Friday's summit, the US president said a permanent peace deal was now the best way to end the war, appearing to abandon aims at the summit for a ceasefire agreement. He also told Fox News in an interview that he would advise Mr Zelensky to make a deal. 'Yeah. Look, Russia is a very big power, and they're not,' he said when asked what he would say. Speaking ahead of Monday's meeting, Mr Zelensky said: 'I plan to discuss all the details regarding the end of the killings, the end of the war with President Trump in Washington on Monday. Grateful for the invitation.' On Saturday, Mr Putin, who also plans to visit Washington to meet Mr Trump, said Friday's meeting was 'timely' and 'useful'. The US and Russia are now 'closer to making appropriate decisions', Putin added. Meanwhile, European leaders have been putting piling pressure on Mr Trump not to cave to Putin's demands. They also support Mr Zelensky in his demand for security guarantees as part of a peace deal, to deter Russia from invading again in the future. Sir Keir Starmer and leaders from Italy, France and Germany were also on the call with Mr Zelensky spoke and the US president after Friday's summit. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the security guarantees - inspired by the transatlantic NATO alliance's Article 5 - had been the most interesting development at the summit. Speaking at the press conference after the summit, Mr Putin, who has hitherto opposed involving foreign ground forces, said he agreed with Trump that Ukraine's security must be "ensured". On Sunday afternoon, the coalition of the willing, a group of countries that have pledged to protect Ukraine, including the UK, will meet, with French president Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Sir Keir expected to lead it. In a statement on Saturday, Sir Keir said: 'President Trump's efforts have brought us closer than ever before to ending Russia's illegal war in Ukraine. His leadership in pursuit of an end to the killing should be commended. 'While progress has been made, the next step must be further talks involving President Zelenskyy'.
