EDB reports record 2024 results with a 222% year-on-year increase in financing

Emirates Development Bank (EDB), the key financial engine for economic development and industrial advancement in the UAE, has announced its full-year results for 2024, showcasing its significant economic contribution and pivotal role in driving economic diversification and resilience in the UAE.
EDB's financing since the launch of its transformational strategy in 2021 has reached Dh15.7 billion, increasing the Bank's contribution to the UAE's industrial GDP impact to Dh7.4 billion by end of 2024.
EDB's economic impact was further demonstrated through a notable increase in the CAPEX and FDI financing indicators. The bank has mobilised a total of Dh50.2 billion in CAPEX financing, which supported Dh15 billion in greenfield projects, , and facilitated Dh7 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) since 2021. In addition, EDB's financing has contributed to the creation of 28,000 industrial jobs in the UAE, underlining the bank's commitment to job creation and economic opportunity.
Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Emirates Development Bank, said: 'Aligned with the vision of the leadership, Emirates Development Bank continues to drive the industrial sector's growth and enhance the UAE's position as an attractive destination for investment. The results achieved by the bank in 2024 build on the momentum gained since the launch of its transformational strategy in 2021. With Dh15.7 billion in financing, with significant allocations directed towards manufacturing, advanced technology, and renewable energy, EDB reaffirms its commitment to its mandate of fostering sustainable economic growth and diversification, in line with the UAE's national development goals. These achievements reflect EDB's ongoing efforts to foster innovation, strengthen industrial competitiveness, and contribute to the UAE's economic resilience and global standing. In 2024, EDB focused on enhancing its operating model, developing its FDI proposition and launching new products and trade desk capabilities. The bank introduced "EDB Smart Connect", an innovative cash management solution, offering clients secure and real-time access to their accounts anytime, anywhere. Since its launch, the platform has onboarded over 50 clients, delivering seamless banking capabilities tailored to the evolving needs of UAE enterprises and highlighting EDB's digital-first approach. Additionally, EDB rolled out six trade finance products and provided Dh1.2 billion through trade finance solutions in 2024.
The manufacturing sector remained at the forefront of EDB's strategic focus, receiving Dh4.23 billion in financing throughout the year, which is 49 per cent of the year's total financing. This support drove advancements in UAE-based industrial projects, emphasising the bank's commitment to bolstering national manufacturing capabilities. Parallel to this, EDB sustained its contributions to technological and sustainable innovation in 2024, with Dh1.2 billion supporting renewable energy projects, affirming EDB's alignment with the UAE's net zero objectives.
Financing for advanced technology has reached Dh3 billion, underscoring EDB's commitment to fostering the adoption of cutting-edge industrial innovations. Additionally, total financing to the food security sector amounted to Dh1.22 billion, while the healthcare sector received Dh1.14 billion, reflecting EDB's focus on driving growth in critical industries. These results showcase EDB's emphasis on sectors critical for the UAE's sustainable future and reinforcing country's position as a key enabler of global competitiveness.
Supporting the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (mSMEs) remained a core priority in 2024, with total financing for these enterprises reaching Dh3 billion, including Dh758 million through the Bank's Credit Guarantee Scheme in partnership with 11 commercial banks, Dh2.1 billion in direct financing to mSMEs and Dh107 million to SME-Micro projects. These efforts enhance financial inclusion and showcase EDB's role as a strategic partner for mSMEs, fostering their growth and bridging critical financing gaps.
EDB's strong financial performance and strategic focus have been recognised by S&P Global, which has upgraded the Bank's credit rating to AA, the highest among financial institutions in the UAE and Mena region. This milestone highlights the clarity of EDB's strategy, its robust financial profile, and its alignment with national development priorities. The AA rating is a testament to EDB's disciplined financial management, successful delivery of its mandate, and strategic role as a provider of innovative financing solutions and banking services. This recognition further solidifies the trust and confidence of clients and stakeholders, enabling EDB to drive sustainable economic growth.
Moving into 2025, EDB is well-positioned to accelerate its contributions to the UAE's economic agenda. Priorities for the upcoming year include reaching a financing target of Dh23 billion and driving the use of AI technologies to enhance operational efficiency through robotic process automation (RPA) and machine learning (ML). EDB will also continue to drive growth in critical sectors through industrial co-lending partnerships, scaling digital transformation, and continuing to foster sustainable economic development aligned with the UAE's vision for diversification.

Measured against a base score of 50 the latest survey reveals a tally of 57, suggesting a stable and optimistic sentiment against a dynamic economic environment. UAE business optimism Despite a marginal drop in the overall Index score by four points from 61 in 2023 to 57 in 2024, the findings show that optimism remains steady, with over two-thirds (68 per cent) of SMEs viewing the future business environment as favourable, and more than 60 per cent reporting revenue growth over the past two years. While challenges persist, including rising operational costs, corporate tax implementation, and high borrowing costs, the overall trajectory signals adaptability and optimism among SMEs in navigating the evolving business landscape. Raheel Ahmed, Group CEO of RAKBANK, said: 'This has been a milestone month for RAKBANK's Business Banking Group, reinforcing our commitment to the UAE's dynamic SME sector. 'In a further boost to the SME ecosystem, RAKBANK and Emirates Development Bank announced a strategic AED1bn ($272m) co-financing partnership during the 'Make it in the Emirates' forum, held under the patronage of the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology. 'Small and medium enterprises are the backbone of every thriving economy, and in the UAE, they play a central role in driving diversification and sustainable development.' The report showcases several trends shaping the SME sector in 2025. Consumer and Retail Services remain the highest-performing sector, driven by a continued rise in consumer spending and successful adoption of new business channels. While Consumer andRetail Services SMEs achieved a sector confidence score of 60, Construction and Manufacturing (57), Transport (57), and Trading (58) remained steady in confidence, while Public Services and Professional Services saw more notable declines to 56, largely due to increased costs and lower confidence in debt servicing. The 2025 report, compiled in partnership with RFI Global, reflects a confidence score of 57, signalling continued resilience in the sector. The findings are based on responses from over 1,200 SMEs across the UAE, surveyed between October and December 2024. While the Index score has declined from 61 in 2023 to 57 in 2024, it remains above the base level of 50, pointing to overall positive sentiment. Also, 68 per cent of SMEs view the future business environment as favourable, and over 60 per cent reported revenue growth in the past two years. 'Small and medium enterprises are the backbone of every thriving economy, and in the UAE, they play a central role in driving diversification and sustainable development,' said Raheel Ahmed, group CEO of Ahmed added that the bank launched the SME Confidence Index in 2024 to capture sentiment, challenges and growth outlook. In a major move to support the SME ecosystem, RAKBANK and Emirates Development Bank announced a strategic Dhs1bn co-financing partnership during the 'Make it in the Emirates' forum, under the patronage of the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology. Sector trends and challenges for SMEs Consumer and Retail Services emerged as the highest-performing sector, achieving a confidence score of 60, supported by increased consumer spending and expansion into new business channels. Construction and Manufacturing, Transport, and Trading sectors scored 57, 57, and 58 respectively, showing stable sentiment. However, confidence in Public Services and Professional Services dipped to 56, largely due to higher operating costs and concerns over debt servicing. While more than three in five SMEs recorded revenue increases over the past two years, over two-thirds experienced rising operational expenses. Only 39 per cent expressed confidence in meeting debt obligations, down from the previous year. The report found that smaller SMEs (with revenues up to Dhs30m) had a higher confidence score of 58, while larger SMEs (with revenues between Dhs30–100m) registered a lower score of 55. Digital and sustainable growth in focus Digital transformation continues to gain ground among UAE SMEs. Some 22 per cent now sell products or services online, while 45 per cent use digital banking channels monthly. SREENIVASA REDDY (ABU DHABI)The UAE stock markets consolidated gains on Wednesday ahead of the upcoming four-day Eid Al Adha Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) recorded its second consecutive session of gains, with its general index (FADGI) rising by 0.449% to close at 9,734.99. A total of 25,971 trades were executed, involving 373 million shares with a combined value of Dh1.443 total market capitalisation of all companies listed on the ADX stood at Dh3.003 trillion, a milestone it had crossed earlier this week for the second Dhabi Islamic Bank led the rally with a 2.43% gain, followed by First Abu Dhabi Bank with a 2.13% rise and ADNOC Gas with a 0.92% top gainers on the ADX included E7W Warrants (+14.92%), Fujairah Cement (+14.88%), and Abu Dhabi Ship Building (+13.47%). Notable decliners were National Bank of Fujairah (-9.52%), Eshraq Investments (-4.42%), and Finance House (-4.35%).Shares of Abu Dhabi Ship Building surged after it secured a Dh7 billion contract from its shareholder EDGE Group for the supply of missile boats to the Kuwait Naval Forces. DFMThe Dubai Financial Market's general index (DFMGI) rose by 0.255% to close at 5,535.93 points. The index has posted annual gains every year since 2021, climbing 27% last year and up 7% so far in 2025. A total of 18,583 trades were executed on the DFM, involving 389 million shares with a combined value of Dh930 million. Share prices of 20 companies rose, 24 declined, and 10 remained the top gainers were Amlak Finance (+14.58%), Dubai Refreshment (+13.07%), and Dubai Financial Market (+5.96). On the losing side, Al Mazaya Holding fell by 7.14%, followed by National Cement (-2.70%), Emaar Development (-2.62%), and Tabreed (-2.53%).
