Andhra Pradesh Congress committee chief YS Sharmila issues ultimatum to Visakhapatnam Steel Plant management
Vijayawada:
Andhra Pradesh Congress
Committee chief
YS Sharmila
Reddy issued an ultimatum to the
Visakhapatnam Steel Plant
management, demanding the immediate reinstatement of 2,000 terminated contract workers by Tuesday. She also called for the payment of pending salaries to regular employees and a rollback of the 2021 privatisation decision.
If the demands are not met, she announced she will begin an '
indefinite hunger strike
' from May 21 in front of the plant. Sharmila accused the management of acting in an autocratic and insensitive manner, saying the Congress party is ready to fight and even sacrifice for the protection of the steel plant and
workers' rights
.
Sharmila accused the plant management of showing no concern for the welfare of the workers, despite an ongoing strike planned from tomorrow.
"The management is acting as if it has no accountability, no humanity," she said, adding that there was a blatant lack of corrective action even as the livelihoods of thousands are at stake.
"The management, which already rendered 2,000 contract workers jobless, is now conspiring to throw another 3,000 onto the streets. This is inhuman and unacceptable," Sharmila alleged. She also condemned the suspension of workers who raised their voices against these injustices, calling it a draconian move aimed at silencing dissent.

Declaring that the Congress party stands firmly with the workers, Sharmila demanded that the 2,000 terminated contract workers be reinstated without delay. She also urged the management to immediately release the pending salaries of regular employees, which were due for the past eight months.
Reviving the long-standing issue of privatisation, Sharmila demanded that the Centre roll back its January 2021 decision to privatise the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
Instead, she insisted that the plant should be merged with the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) to secure its future.
"If these demands are not met, the Congress party will not hesitate to escalate the agitation. In support of the workers' indefinite strike beginning tomorrow, I will launch an indefinite hunger strike from May 21 right outside the plant premises," she declared.

UP CM adviser holds talks with Goswami community over Banke Bihari Corridor
Agra: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath's adviser Awanish Kumar Awasthi on Friday, chaired a meeting at the tourist facilitation centre in Vrindavan, to discuss issues related to the proposed Banke Bihari Corridor with members of the Goswami community involved in the management of the temple, local shopkeepers and residents. Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Awasthi said the proposed project aims to enhance facilities for pilgrims, and efficiently manage the increasing pilgrim footfall in the Mathura-Vrindavan area. "The number of pilgrims visiting the area is rising exponentially. Today's meeting focused on how to effectively cater to this surge while ensuring public confidence and participation in the planning process. This was the first round of discussions, and it was very productive," he said. On concerns raised by the Goswami community regarding the project, Awasthi said several suggestions had been put forth during the meeting. "The district magistrate and other officials will carefully evaluate these inputs. The state govt aims to proceed with the most inclusive and best possible option to take the project forward," Awasthi said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Established in 1862 in the heart of Vrindavan, the Shri Banke Bihari temple is administered by Shebaits — a hereditary priesthood responsible for daily rituals and temple management. It remains one of North India's most visited pilgrimage sites. The Supreme Court's May 15 verdict came amid ongoing protests by members of the Goswami community and local residents, who have opposed both the corridor project and the formation of Banke Bihari Temple Trust. The court's decision, delivered by a bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and SC Sharma, cleared the way for the govt to move ahead with its Rs 500 crore redevelopment plan, which includes acquiring nearly five acres of land near the shrine, using temple funds. Calls for redevelopment intensified after a stampede-like incident during Janmashtami celebrations in 2022, left two dead. In Sept 2023, the Allahabad high court directed the state govt to implement a corridor plan for improved crowd management and safety. While officials claim stakeholders were consulted, Shebaits and local residents have alleged they were excluded from the planning process. Uttarakhand HC stops construction work on Mussoorie's Mall Road
Dehradun: Uttarakhand high court on Friday halted ongoing construction work by the Mussoorie municipality on the road connecting Mall Road to Library road. While hearing a public interest petition filed by Mussoorie resident Pradeep Sah against the construction, the bench comprising Chief Justice G Narendar and Justice Alok Mahra ordered the halt and instructed the municipality to submit a response within three weeks. The next hearing in the case will also be held after three weeks. The public interest petition states that in 2023, the Mussoorie municipality passed a proposal to remove an existing dispensary from the middle of Mall Road to streamline traffic, which improved the traffic situation. However, the municipality resumed construction at the same location following a board meeting in March 2025. The petitioner argues that building in the middle of the road could lead to traffic jams and other inconveniences, and therefore, the construction should be stopped.
