UAE: More women are choosing to freeze their eggs despite social stigma; here's why
"It took me a lot of courage to broach this subject with my family. But my parents were open-minded and supportive of my decision," she shared.
"I am nowhere close to even meeting a partner, let alone getting married. That is why I decided that I want to take this step. I am the eldest of three girls and I think I am going to set an example for my sisters as well," she added.
M.A. is one of a growing number of women in the UAE exploring fertility preservation. In recent months, several events have aimed to educate and empower women about their reproductive choices. In May, science and technology company Merck partnered with femtech firm Ovasave to host an evening of discussion to encourage more women to take informed decisions about their fertility. Earlier this month, media agency TishTash followed suit with an event focused on IVF and egg freezing.
Growing interest
'I have seen a noticeable rise in interest from women seeking information about egg freezing,' said Cassie Destino, founder of IVF Support UAE. 'As fertility preservation becomes a more mainstream conversation, more women are learning about their options and recognising that this kind of proactive healthcare can be an empowering choice for their future.'
According to Dr Charles Badr Nagy Rafael, consultant obstetrics and gynaecology at Medcare Women and Children Hospital, he has seen more women opting for egg-freezing. 'More women are freezing their eggs in their late 20s and especially by 30s for various reasons such as focusing on career, waiting for the right partner, or managing health issues like endometriosis,' he said. 'It's an empowering option that gives women more control over their future.'
He added that many women learn about their infertility only when they start trying for a child and often times, it is too late. 'If women often have painful periods, discomfort during intimacy or ongoing pelvic pain, it could be a sign of endometriosis,' he said.
'The good news is, we have ways to detect it early like simple scans or minor procedures and explore options like egg freezing or treatment to help protect your future fertility. The key is not to wait talk to your doctor early if something doesn't feel right," he added.
Sarrah Barakat, government affairs – access and communications director at Merck Gulf said she wished she had known about the option to freeze her eggs when she was younger. "I had my son at 38, and the entire pregnancy was filled with anxiety — worrying about age-related risks like Down syndrome and other such issues that could show in late pregnancies,' she recalled.
She believes that as society encourages women to pursue careers and delay traditional paths like marriage and motherhood, it's essential they're made aware of their reproductive choices. "It is really just about giving them another option.'
Stigma persists
Despite rising awareness, many women still face challenges in accessing egg freezing and IVF — primarily due to cost.
'Because it's not considered an 'essential' healthcare in the way disease treatment is, many women hesitate to spend that kind of money, especially on something that feels uncertain or far off in the future. There's also a perception that the process will be long, painful, or overly complicated.
"In reality, it's far more manageable than many expect. But it can still feel like a major step, especially when you're not even sure if you'll ever need to use the frozen eggs. That emotional and financial unknown can be a real hurdle for many women," Cassie noted.
Dr Charles added that although things have gotten a lot better, there is still some stigma around the biological clock and fertility risks. 'There's still a long way to go,' he said. 'With all the talk about IVF and egg freezing, many young women think they can hit pause on fertility, but biology still plays by its own rules. Egg quality naturally declines with age, even if you feel perfectly healthy. That's why we encourage open, honest conversations early on so you can plan your future with confidence.'

UAE extends lifeline to Gaza's health sector, averting total collapse
The UAE, through its humanitarian efforts and relief aid under Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, has managed to keep the Gaza Strip's health sector operational, averting total collapse and ensuring continued medical services for the Palestinian people. The UAE demonstrated utmost readiness and high professionalism during its swift intervention to address the escalating medical challenges in the Gaza Strip. This was evident through its presence on the ground via the Emirati field hospital inside the Strip, the floating hospital deployed to Egypt's Al Arish city, the transfer of critical and severe cases to UAE hospitals for treatment, and the dispatch of various medical aid and supplies to enhance Gaza's health sector capabilities. Since its inauguration in December 2023, the Emirati integrated field hospital in Gaza has continued to provide treatment services to the people of Gaza through specialised and qualified cadres in various medical fields, supported by medical volunteers. By April 2025, the number of cases treated at the hospital exceeded 51,000, including critical injuries and complex surgical operations. Through the hospital, the UAE launched a humanitarian initiative to provide prosthetics for injured individuals who underwent amputations, aiming to support their rehabilitation and help them regain their normal lives. The facility has a capacity of 200 beds and includes operating rooms equipped for various types of surgeries. The medical team successfully removed a 5-kilogramme tumour from the abdomen of a patient who had endured years of severe pain and complications. In February 2024, the UAE dispatched an integrated floating hospital off the coast of Al Arish to provide medical support to Palestinians. The facility includes a medical and administrative team across various specialties, such as anaesthesiology, general surgery, orthopaedics, and emergency medicine. By April 2025, the hospital had treated approximately 10,370 cases. It has a capacity of 100 beds, operating rooms, intensive care units, radiology, a laboratory, a pharmacy, and medical warehouses. In addition to on-the-ground support, the UAE has also facilitated the transfer of critical patients to its hospitals. Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE committed to hosting 1,000 Palestinian cancer patients of all ages, as well as 1,000 Palestinian children with their families, to ensure they receive complete healthcare until they can return home. By 14th May, a total of 2,634 patients and family members had arrived in the UAE, demonstrating the country's commitment to providing necessary treatment. Medical and health supplies constitute a significant part of the total humanitarian aid the UAE continues to deliver to Gaza since the beginning of the crisis. These include various types of medicines and equipment, such as dialysis machines, ultrasound devices, lung resuscitation devices, wheelchairs, artificial respiration masks, and ambulances. After 500 days since the launch of Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, the UAE has provided more than 1,200 tonnes of medical materials and supplies to support Gaza's hospitals. The health system was further reinforced with 17 ambulances equipped with the latest technology. A comprehensive polio vaccination campaign was also implemented, covering over 640,000 children as part of preventive efforts to protect future generations from infectious diseases. Between 1st January and 24th April 2025, Dubai Humanitarian sent three relief shipments to Al Arish International Airport in support of Gaza, carrying approximately 256 metric tonnes of medical supplies belonging to the World Health Organisation. To enhance public health and prevent communicable diseases, the UAE also contributes through projects and initiatives that provide safe drinking water in the Gaza Strip and implements measures to repair sewage networks, aiming to reduce pollution and curb the spread of epidemics and infectious diseases.

UAE sets new standards for next-generation oral products
Credit: Getty Images In this interview, Alexandre Ghanem, Cluster Head of Middle East & North Africa (MENA) at BAT, discusses the significance of the new rules, how they align with global harm reduction efforts, and BAT's plans to launch a new portfolio in the UAE. Pictured: Alexandre Ghanem, Cluster Head of Middle East & North Africa (MENA) at BAT. What are BAT's plans for the UAE with this new regulatory framework in mind? The UAE's decision to issue regulatory requirements for tobacco-free oral nicotine pouches aligns with BAT's transformation and our vision of creating 'A Better Tomorrow'—a smokeless world driven by reducing the health impact of our business. Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) as a policy encourages adult consumers who would otherwise continue to smoke to switch to lower-risk alternatives. Adult smokers and nicotine users in the UAE are progressive and open to innovative products. The UAE standard now provides access to high-quality alternatives, which is why BAT plans to introduce a new portfolio of tobacco-free oral nicotine pouches under the VELO brand in the market, in line with our THR ambitions. How significant is regulating tobacco-free oral nicotine pouches to harm reduction in the UAE? The UAE continues to lead in regulatory innovation. The Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology's (MoIAT) decision to issue a technical standard for tobacco-free oral nicotine pouches reflects a strong commitment to public health and quality control. It is widely accepted that most harm from smoking comes from inhaling the smoke produced by burning tobacco—not from nicotine itself. Tobacco-free oral nicotine pouches, being smokeless and tobacco-free, present a reduced-risk profile when compared to combustible products, assuming a complete switch from smoking. How effective has the launch of BAT's tobacco-free nicotine pouches been elsewhere? Can that success be replicated in the UAE? Our tobacco-free nicotine pouches are currently available in over 40 countries, with 7.4 million adult consumers globally. VELO products are developed under rigorous stewardship and have been shown to contain 90–99 per cent fewer toxic chemicals compared to cigarette smoke. The broader category of oral nicotine pouches has contributed significantly to global public health by reducing smoking rates. Sweden is a notable example, where oral nicotine has largely replaced smoking over the past 70 years, resulting in the lowest smoking rate and lung cancer mortality rate in Europe—29.1 deaths per 100,000 compared to the EU average of 66.7 (2020 data). As of 2024, Sweden's smoking rate stands at 5.3 per cent, positioning it to achieve the WHO's 'smoke-free' status and putting the country 15 years ahead of the EU's 2040 target. Where do tobacco-free oral nicotine pouches fall on the risk continuum compared to cigarettes? Leading health bodies, including the US FDA, acknowledge that the main causes of smoking-related diseases are the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke—not nicotine itself. In 2008, the WHO identified nine key toxicants in cigarette smoke. In VELO products, these are reduced by more than 99 per cent. While smokers may be addicted to nicotine, nicotine itself is not classified as a carcinogen. The Royal College of Physicians in London reinforces this, noting that the real danger lies in the smoke. If nicotine can be delivered in an effective and acceptable smokeless form, such as oral pouches, most—if not all—of the harm from smoking could potentially be avoided.
