Ministry aims to expand access for Sara recipients
Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the ministry had proposed that recipients be allowed to use their Sara aid at mobile Jualan Rahmah Madani Programme (PJRM) locations, in addition to existing participating retailers.
He said at present, Sara aid recipients could only purchase basic items at 4,152 participating supermarkets and retail outlets nationwide, including 470 in Sabah.
"This will enable Sara recipients to use the aid credited to their MyKad to make purchases at mobile PJRM locations," he said after launching the Sabah Zone Carnival 2025 here on Saturday.
Armizan said the additional RM300 million PJRM allocation would enable the ministry to increase its frequency, with a target of 20,000 this year.
"For Sabah, the ministry is targeting 2,276 PJRM series this year, with 1,089 already implemented as of today (Saturday).
"We will adopt several approaches to ensure the target is achieved by year end."
He said this included increasing the range of items offered and enhancing cooperation with strategic retail partners.
"Through these improvements, the people will have more choices. The ministry can no longer act alone as it did in the past."
He said this was the second year the ministry had implemented the Zone Carnival programme, adding that six carnivals would be held nationwide this year.
"For the carnival in Ranau, held in conjunction with the Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign, we expect around 60,000 visitors during the three-day event."
Armizan said the main goal of the initiative was to bring government services, particularly those under the ministry, closer to the people.

Govt to hold 2026 Budget consultation council this week
KUALA LUMPUR: The government will hold the 2026 Budget Consultation Council this week to gather feedback from stakeholders for the national budget, which is scheduled to be tabled in October. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the engagement session is part of the Madani government's efforts to ensure the national budget reflects the needs and aspirations of both the people and industry players. "The engagement session will be held this Thursday, Aug 7. Essentially, it is part of an ongoing effort to gather feedback from various stakeholders, including their aspirations for the 2026 Budget," he said. "This will take into account the various ongoing initiatives and policies currently being implemented, while also considering the current geopolitical situation and prevailing challenges," he said after attending the Chief Human Resources Officer Nexus Forum. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh was also present. Fahmi added that the government would also devote more time to understand the needs of the people and listen to the views of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which form the backbone of the national economy. He said MSMEs contribute approximately 70 per cent of employment for Malaysians. "As such, it is important for the government to understand the issues they are facing," he said. Fahmi said this Thursday's session would mark the first of many such engagements, which would be intensified in the coming weeks. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had also advised all ministries to conduct engagement sessions with the Finance Ministry to present their views, he said. "Based on the 13th Malaysia Plan, which we hope to pass next week, we will then determine the specific areas that should be prioritised in the 2026 Madani Budget under the first rolling plan," he said, adding that the engagement process is expected to continue until the final draft is completed. The 2026 Supply Bill (Budget) is scheduled to be tabled on Oct 10, according to Parliament's meeting agenda. Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan said the national budget will continue Malaysia's trajectory of reform, inclusivity, and resilience.

South Korea pledges to help companies cope with higher US tariffs
SEOUL: South Korea will prepare measures to help companies cope with higher US tariffs and expand into new markets, the Finance Ministry said on Tuesday, as it kicked off a task force to prepare the new administration's economic policy plans. On the domestic front, the government will come up with measures to boost short-term demand, as well as financial support for mid- to long-term technology development to enhance market competitiveness, it said in a statement. South Korea reached a trade deal with the US last week, just days before President Donald Trump's threatened 25 per cent tariff rate was due to come in on its exports to the United States. The trade deal set tariffs on exports from the Asian country at 15 per cent, still higher than a baseline 10 per cent rate and the near zero tariffs for exports under a Korea-US free trade agreement. Still, topics left unresolved by the deal provide scope for more disputes as the two countries prepare for a summit between Trump and new South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in the coming weeks. Trump may use the summit to try to squeeze more concessions on areas such as defence costs and corporate investments, left out of the deal, while non-tariff barriers and currency could prove thorny issues, experts said. South Korea's Finance Ministry, however, sought to give a positive spin on the agreement. The deal reduced uncertainty over the trade environment, while a US$350 billion investment package included in the deal will provide new business opportunities for companies, deepen economic cooperation between the two countries, and contribute to a more stable supply chain, the ministry said. The administration of President Lee also plans to prepare policy measures to foster new industries, such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors and "K-contents" and include them in economic growth strategies and budget plans due to be announced later this month. K-contents refers to a range of cultural and entertainment goods produced by the country ranging from K-pop to Korean dramas that have boomed globally. The ministry vowed to bring regulatory improvements to vitalise business activity, as it kicked off a meeting with the country's major business groups. Asia's fourth-largest economy grew in the second quarter at the fastest pace in more than a year on rebounding consumer spending and a surge in technology exports, but still faces headwinds from slowing global trade amid the sweeping tariffs. The International Monetary Fund last week raised its outlook for most advanced and emerging economies this year based on developments around US tariff negotiations, but South Korea was among the exceptions, with its 2025 growth forecast revised down to 0.8 per cent from 1.0 per cent.

Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah: RM410mil disbursed in Sabah under Phases 1 and 2
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 830,000 recipients in Sabah have benefited from the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) programme so far, with RM410 million disbursed under Phase 1 and Phase 2 payments. Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a written parliamentary reply last night, said the remaining two STR phases are scheduled to be disbursed in August and November. He added that 506,000 recipients in the state have also been approved under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, which comes with an annual allocation of RM500 million. "Sabah recorded the highest MyKad usage for Sara purchases, with 95 per cent of recipients already making purchases at registered premises," he said. Anwar was responding to Vivian Wong Shir Yee (PH–Sandakan), who queries number of eligible Sara recipients in Sabah and how many had redeemed the assistance so far. Anwar also said more than 4,500 grocery stores and supermarkets nationwide are now registered under the programme, a significant jump from just 700 last year. "In line with the rising number of recipients, the number of participating business premises under Sara has also seen a marked increase. "In Sabah alone, more than 470 premises have registered, and this number will continue to grow to ensure broader access in all areas. He said the government remains committed to ensuring its cash aid programmes reach those most in need, especially in the face of rising living costs. "The government has raised the allocation for the STR and Sara programmes to a record RM13 billion, compared with RM10 billion previously. "This increase continues to benefit nearly nine million recipients, or about 60 per cent of the country's adult population," he said. On July 23, Anwar, who is also the prime minister, announced that all Malaysians aged 18 and above will receive a one-off RM100 assistance through their MyKad under the Sara programme. He said the aid, which can be used from Aug 31 until Dec 31, is meant for the purchase of essential goods at over 4,100 outlets nationwide, including major supermarkets such as Mydin, Lotus's, Econsave and 99 Speedmart, as well as retail stores in all districts.
