Amateurs Auckland City hold Boca Juniors
Amateur side Auckland City earned the greatest result in the team's history with a 1-1 draw against Boca Juniors at the Club World Cup on Tuesday.
The already-eliminated New Zealanders fought off the Argentine powerhouses, who entered the game with hopes of advancing if they won, although as Benfica beat Bayern Munich in the other Group C match, Boca would also have been ousted anyway.
Auckland goalkeeper Nathan Garrow's own goal sent Boca ahead but Christian Gray equalised with a header in the second half to earn his team a remarkable point.
After a weather delay, Boca kept pushing and racked up 40 shots but could not find a way past Garrow, who made up for his first half misfortune with several good saves.
Auckland, who were crushed 10-0 by German giants Bayern in their first game and 6-0 by Benfica in the second, set up to defend with five at the back and it paid off.
"It's been a tough trip, we've had some tough results but I'm just happy for the team and the boys, I think we deserve it, we got a little bit of respect back I hope," Auckland goalscorer Gray told DAZN.
"We rely on volunteers, we don't have a lot of money, so I'm just happy that (everyone) is happy...
"It's been a long four years to be honest, building up to this... (I'm) a little bit lost for words."
As amateurs Auckland City players have regular jobs, with Gray working as a teacher.
"I've got a few assignments that have piled up over the last month, so that's what I'll be going back to, and the school holidays thankfully," he added.
Boca controlled the game but were slow in their build up and struggled to break down the New Zealanders' back-line, with 38-year-old veteran striker Edinson Cavani kept quiet.
The minnows had the first chance of the game, with Regont Murati forcing a save from Agustin Marchesin from the edge of the box.
Boca took the lead after 26 minutes when Lautaro Di Lollo's header from a corner hit the post and was palmed into his own net by Garrow.
Boca twice came close to doubling their lead before the break, with Carlos Palacios whipping a shot from distance against the crossbar. Then, Miguel Merentiel's header hit the woodwork as well.
Auckland, the only amateur side in the competition, scored their first goal of the tournament to level after 52 minutes.
Defender Gray shook off his marker and headed home from Jerson Lagos' corner.

PHOTO: REUTERS While Barcelona thrilled on their way to winning La Liga last season, scoring 102 goals in the process, coach Hansi Flick accepts this season his team need to improve defensively. With teenager Lamine Yamal and Raphinha shining in attack, the Catalan giants proved an irresistible force as they claimed a domestic treble. However, the German coach's high-pressing defensive line sometimes left Barcelona high and dry at the back, even as it made for frequently gripping, end-to-end matches. The team's 7-6 Champions League semi-final aggregate defeat by Inter Milan was a prime example of the risks inherent in their set-up. "For me, it's not always fun, sometimes I really suffer a lot," admitted Flick in May after Barca beat rivals Real Madrid 4-3 in a wild Clasico battle to move to the brink of the title. "I'm really happy with what we are doing (in general), and of course, football is a game of making mistakes. Hopefully, we can make things better and make fewer mistakes." The coach made a pledge before the summer break. "I know that we have to improve (defensively) and we will do it next season," vowed Flick. Whether Barca can maintain the same verve in attack is up for debate even before any defensive considerations. Raphinha, 28, had the best season of his career, which will be hard to repeat, while striker Robert Lewandowski turns 37 later in August. Yamal, who has taken former Barca great Lionel Messi's hallowed number 10 shirt, turned 18 in July and is his team's greatest hope in the months and years ahead. While Real Madrid have been able to spend over 172 million euros ($200 million) on new arrivals Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, Alvaro Carreras and Franco Mastantuono, as well as hiring Xabi Alonso as coach, Barcelona's poor financial state means their activity in the transfer market has been limited. The Catalans believe their youngsters like Yamal, centre-back Pau Cubarsi, 18, and midfielder Pedri, still only 22 despite his experience, will continue to grow and improve. They brought in Marcus Rashford on a season-long loan from Manchester United to try and revive the English attacker's career and reap the benefits of his huge potential, giving Flick more quality to rotate with. Barcelona did make one important permanent signing this summer in Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, improving arguably the weakest area of their team. Wojciech Szczesny filled in admirably after coming out of retirement to replace the injured veteran Marc-Andre ter Stegen last season, but is expected to take a reserve role behind the new arrival from Barca's city rivals. Garcia is in line to start as Barca kick off their campaign at Mallorca on August 16. Another hope for the champions is that the return to the Spotify Camp Nou strengthens them. While the Olympic Stadium on the city's Montjuic hill has proven a pleasant stand-in for the past two seasons, it lacks the atmosphere and grandeur of Barcelona's traditional home. The Catalans plan to return there for the fourth league game of the season after the first three are on the road, against Valencia on September 13 or 14. However Barca's entry date has been pushed back numerous times, initially planned for November 2024, and there could be further disruption. Regardless, barring disaster Barca will be back there by the time they host Real Madrid in May 2026, with that game potentially decisive in the title race. Given Flick's side started last season as underdogs to Madrid, that they are favourites to retain the title this time around cannot be taken too seriously. The key may be whether Flick is able to set the team up in a sturdier way without losing any of their attacking edge.

Newcastle sign German defender Thiaw from Milan
Newcastle United have signed German defender Malick Thiaw from Serie A side AC Milan, the Premier League club said late on Tuesday. Financial details were not disclosed but British media reports said Newcastle paid a transfer fee worth around 34.6 million pounds ($46.69 million) for the 24-year-old. Thiaw was a key part of Milan's defensive line-up last season, making 31 appearances across all competitions, but featured less frequently towards the end of their Serie A campaign as they suffered a disappointing eighth-placed finish. He has also played three times for Germany, with all three of those appearances coming in 2023. 'We're really pleased to have Malick on board. He's a player I've admired for a long time and somebody who will add real quality to our defensive options,' Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said in a statement. Grealish to join Everton on loan
Manchester City winger Jack Grealish has agreed to join Everton on loan for the 2025-26 season, according to reports on Monday. Grealish fell out of favour with City boss Pep Guardiola last season and made just seven starts in the Premier League. The 29-year-old was left out of City's squad for the Club World Cup in the United States amid speculation that he was set to leave the Etihad Stadium. Everton have now agreed a deal for Grealish, who earns a reported £300,000 ($402,000) per week, ahead of the new Premier League campaign, which starts for the Toffees at Leeds on August 18. The England international joined City from Aston Villa in 2021 for a then British record fee of £100 million. Grealish has won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup with City, but his form had dipped significantly since he played a key role in the 2022-23 treble-winning campaign. He was left out of England's Euro 2024 squad, an omission that left him "heartbroken". Guardiola rarely picked Grealish last season despite City's struggles and he was left on the bench for the shock FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace. If Grealish passes a medical and completes his move to Everton, the winger will have a chance to revive his spluttering career and potentially earn a recall to the England squad ahead of next year's World Cup. Everton recently left Goodison Park to move into their new Hill Dickenson stadium ahead of the season, with Grealish set to take centre stage in the plush arena. He will rank as Everton's biggest signing since the end of last season after a quiet summer in the transfer market for boss David Moyes.
